Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor: the Motorways of the Sea perspective

ScanMed Corridor: the MoS perspective North-South corridor from Finland to Malta with MoS 13 seaports in the North and Baltic Sea plus another 11 ports in the Mediterranean Maritime O/Ds: different patterns in ranges Baltic Sea little deep sea traffic differences between ports even within ranges

CNC ports - North 277 million tonnes in 2014 container traffic: 100 million t Hamburg (81 Mt) Göteborg (8 Mt) others (11 Mt) ro-ro traffic: 59 million t Lübeck (14 Mt) Trelleborg (10 Mt) others (35 Mt)

CNC ports - South 125 million tonnes in 2014 container traffic: 48 million t Gioia Tauro (26 Mt) La Spezia (10 Mt) others (11 Mt) ro-ro traffic: 26 million t Livorno (9 Mt) Palermo (5 Mt) others (12 Mt)

MoS Key Performance Indicators: adequacy instead of compliance

General approach Compliance (CNCs) Technical parameters Aim: Compliance of all corridor segments Identify single projects Adequacy (MoS) Standards and benchmarks Aim: Improve overall adequacy, taking into account different services, ships and port types Identify development priorities

General approach Huhu Uet / Wikimedia Commons Gillian Thomas / Creative Commons

General approach Oschti & Daveblack / Wikimedia Commons Eileen Sandá / Wikimedia Commons

General approach Where to measure adequacy in a MoS context? 1. Adequacy of link (ships, routes) 2. Adequacy of terminals sea approach terminal superstructure Hinterland Port 1 Port 2 3. Adequacy of hinterland connection rail connection road connection Hinterland

Adquacy Example Approach Example: prepare deep sea container ports for fully loaded large container vessels (400m/16m) Benchmark set by ship size, but soft factor: with T/S on first/last port of call, ship draught is reduced to 14-15m 14.5 m benchmark Only concerning deep sea container ports and those aspiring to be one

Adquacy Example Approach Container ships with 15 m draught can be handled (North). Port Compliance Far East service Adequacy Northern ports HaminaKotka no n/a Helsinki no n/a Turku no n/a Naantali no n/a Stockholm no n/a Göteborg yes Malmö no n/a Trelleborg no n/a København no n/a Rostock no n/a Lübeck no n/a Hamburg yes Bremen no n/a 0/13 0/2

Adquacy Example Approach Container ships with 15 m draught can be handled (South). Port Compliance Far East service Adequacy Southern ports La Spezia yes Livorno no n/a Ancona no n/a Napoli no n/a Bari no n/a Taranto no n/a Gioia Tauro yes Palermo no n/a Augusta no n/a Valletta no n/a Marsaxlokk yes 2/11 2/3

Adquacy Example LNG Member States shall ensure, by means of their national policy frameworks, that an appropriate number of refuelling points for LNG are put in place at maritime ports, to enable LNG inland waterway vessels or seagoing ships to circulate throughout the TEN-T Core Network by 31 December 2025. Member States shall cooperate with neighbouring Member States where necessary to ensure adequate coverage of the TEN-T Core Network. (Art. 6 (1) of Directive 2014/94/EU) Not every CNC port needs LNG supply Adequate coverage coverage according to demand Market for LNG in near future: regular shortsea lines

Adquacy Example LNG
