The Stroganov family had been well-known merchants since the 15th century, but rose to the ranks of the aristocracy in the reign of Peter the Great in thanks for considerable financial assistance to the Tsar's armies in the Great Northern War. The family was brought to national prominence by Baron Sergey Griogoryevich who commissioned the building of the Palace by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1752. The exteriors were completed in 1754, and remain intact to this day as one of the brilliant masterpieces of late Baroque in St. Petersburg. The most impressive interiors of the Stroganov palace, however, are those created by Andrey Voronikhin, architect of the Kazan Cathedral, who was employed in the 1790s and 1800s to remodel the interior decor in the neoclassical style.

One of the world s largest ethnographic museums is ideally located in the Arts Square beside Mikhailovsky Palace of the Russian Museum. The Museum s 615 square meters large Marble Hall is the memorial to Emperor Alexander III and is one of the most beautiful halls in Saint Petersburg. The hall was designed to show the grandeur of the Russian Empire, it is decorated in pink marble with a glass arched ceiling.

As part of his efforts to build Saint Petersburg up from swampland, Peter the Great brought in Dutch shipbuilders, giving them a workspace along the left bank of the Neva. This area soon began to resemble more of a foreign port, giving way to the nickname Holland, which was later fixed to the man-made island formed by the Moika river and the Admiralteysky and Kryukov Canals. In the 1730s, when the island itself was finally complete, it was handed over to the navy who commissioned the architect Korobov to design wooden barracks to store the lumber for shipbuilding purposes. In the middle of the 18th century, these wooden barns were replaced by sturdier stone structures. In the 20th century, buildings of New Holland Island fell into neglect, serving as military barracks, warehouses and - most recently- offices for various commercial enterprises.
