Sat., Sept. 29 CHICAGO/EN ROUTE (I) We will depart Chicago s O Hare International Airport in the late afternoon by scheduled service of Lufthansa German Airlines on the overnight transatlantic flight to Frankfurt, Germany. Day by Day Itinerary Sun., Sept. 30 FRANKFURT / BAMBERG (I,D) As the sun begins to rise on the German heartland we arrive in Frankfurt where we ll meet our Tour Escort who will travel with us throughout our vacation. From Frankfurt Airport we ll travel by motor coach to beautiful and historic Franconia, a region that covers a large part of northern Bavaria, where we ll spend our first three evenings in Bamberg. Known as The Rome of Franconia because of its seven hills, Bamberg is one of Germany s most historic and romantic cities. Its fine medieval buildings and ancient street plan remain intact, carefully preserved by the city fathers for future generations to enjoy. Bamberg constitutes the largest preserved Old Town in Germany and was declared a national monument in 1981. Our hotel the next three nights is Welcome Hotel Residenzschloss Bamberg. Mon., Oct. 1 BAMBERG (B) Bamberg is a town that s famous for its breweries, with nine breweries producing some fifty different beers, including its specialty, Rauchbier, a smoked beer with a characteristic taste. Today we ll enjoy a walking Bamberg Beer tour, where we ll visit many of the breweries with Ryan of Crystal Lake Brewing, and our local guide who will regale us with interesting information about the breweries and beers, as well as historic attractions. Our tour will take us through Bamberg s splendidly preserved Old Town and the Domplatz, one of Germany s loveliest squares that is home to the magnificent Bamberg Cathedral, dominating the city skyline with its massive four towers. We ll be sure to stop at Klosterbräu, the oldest brewery in Bamberg at 480 years, with a traditionally decorated bar and restaurant area giving way to the shiny storage tanks and cylinders. We ll have the opportunity to make a stop at the Weyerman Malting Company, supplier to CLB. Afterward, the evening is at leisure to explore the city, perhaps a visit to Little Venice, a district of fishermen s cottages, or to stop back in one of your favorite breweries from the tour. Tues., Oct. 2 BAMBERG (Rothenburg) (B) Today we travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Jewel in the Crown of Germany s Romantic Road. Here we ll enjoy an introductory walking tour of Rothenburg, considered to be one of the loveliest and well-preserved walled cities in the entire world. Cameras are a must, as you will feel like we have walked back into the 16th century when we stroll along the cobblestone streets to see the fabled Town Hall and the Plonlein, a picturesque corner formed by the juncture of two streets, before ending with a unique view of the Tauber Valley. Afterward, free time will allow us to explore this wonderful town on our own. Be sure to visit Kathe Wohlfahrt s worldfamous Christmas Store with its displays and peek inside the Museum of Medieval Justice, home to the instruments of torture, punishment and execution of a bygone era. Wed., Oct. 3 BAMBERG / KONIGSDORF (Freising, Aying) This morning we depart Bamberg and travel south to the town of Freising which combines culture and history, tradition and modern events throughout the year. Here we ll visit Weihenstephan Brauerei, the world s oldest operating brewery, opened in 1040 AD, and a world renowned brewing school. Our tour starts with a visit to the brewery museum To the Origin of Beer, and learn about the nearly 1000 years of history of the Bavarian State Brewery of Weihenstephan, continue to the sacred territory, the art of brewing, before ending with a beer-tasting session. Leaving Freising, we ll make a somber visit to the village of Dachau, built on a hilltop with views of Munich and the Alps, and for most people is inextricably linked with the infamous Dachau Prison Camp, the first concentration camp to be set up in Germany in March, 1933. In stark contrast to Dachau, next we ll set our sights on Aying, a charming town with another wonderful brewery, where we ll learn the art of the brew. Although beer brewed according to the Purity Law contains few ingredients, the process is highly sensitive, and the Ayinger Brewery has perfected it over 130 years. Afterward we ll continue our journey to Konigsdorf for overnight at Posthotel Hofherr. Thur., Oct. 4 KONIGSDORF (Munich s Oktoberfest) (B,L) Today we travel to Munich, the capital city of Bavaria and the heart of artistic Germany. Cheerful and vivacious, boasting magnificent architecture from Bavaria s royal past, Munich is the center of the Bavarian zest for life that you ll experience firsthand with an afternoon luncheon at the Oktoberfest. From its humble beginnings as a royal wedding celebration to what is today known as the most famous beer festival in the world, you ll have an opportunity to revel in the 184th anniversary of the Oktoberfest. Celebrated at the Wies n Fair Grounds, the festival tents of the Munich breweries welcome visitors with their lively brass bands, lederhosen and bright folk costumes. Late this afternoon, we ll depart the Oktoberfest and return to Konigsdorf.

Fri., Oct. 5 KONIGSDORF / SEEFELD (Andechs, Linderhof Palace) This morning we depart Konigsdorf travel across the German countryside to the southern shore of the Ammersee to reach the village of Andechs where we ll visit the Benedictine Abbey crowning holy hill. Andechs is not only a destination of pilgrimages to the local church, but also for less spiritual trips to the Braustuberl where visitors can refresh themselves with a glass of the tasty beer brewed by the local monks. Next we ll journey to the Passion Play village of Oberammergau, known for its beautifully painted homes, many in fairytale design depicting scenes from Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. Afterward, we make our way to nearby Linderhof Palace for a guided tour. The palace, set in a forest in the midst of the Ammergau Mountains, is perhaps the most interesting of the castles built towards the end of the 19th century by Mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Leaving Bavaria, we ll cross into Austria on our way to the Alpine resort of Seefeld and the Hotel Haymon. Sat., Oct. 6 SEEFELD (Salzburg) (B) Today our tour will take us to Salzburg, an enchanting city built on both banks of the Salzach River. Salzburg was largely built by three bishopprinces in the late 16th and 17th centuries, which is what gives the city its Italian flavor and its skyline punctuated by countless medieval spires, domes, belfries and turrets. The city s charm is apparent in its picturesque streets full of wrought-iron signs, noble architecture and highly decorated fountains. We ll begin with an introductory tour on the right bank of the Salzach River where we ll see the grounds of Mirabell Palace and the Mozart Conservatoire, before crossing over into the Old Town. Here we ll see the 15th century Altes Rathaus and take in the sites along the romantic Getreidgasse, where we ll also find Mozart s birthplace, now a museum with many of his early manuscripts and instruments. We ll see the Collegiate Church and the Franciscan Church as we make our way to the Residence Square, home to the medieval bishops residence. Nearby we ll visit Salzburg Cathedral and then pass St. Peter s Abbey, seen so frequently in the Sound of Music. Sun., Oct. 7 SEEFELD (Innsbruck, Starkenberger) As few resorts can match the unique combination of traditional charm and modern amenities, the morning is at leisure in Seefeld. Browse the delightful shops in search of that perfect gift; relax with a quiet meadow and mountain walk, horse-drawn carriage ride, or even a chair lift and cable car journey into the surrounding Alps. This afternoon we travel to Innsbruck, the capital of the Austria Tyrol, where afternoon sightseeing will introduce us to the Wilten Basilica, one of the finest Rococo churches in the northern Tyrol, and the Triumphal Arch. Then we ll travel to nearby Wattens, home of Swarovski Crystal, and enjoy a tour of the Kristallwelten. This truly fantastic journey will take us past works in crystal and into the six Chambers of Wonders. Before returning to Seefeld, we ll make our way to the village of Tarrenz, home to the 700-year old Starkenberg Castle. Here we ll enjoy a guided tour, blending the history of beer brewing with the modern technology of today s brewing process. Taking advantage of beer s skin-friendly vitamins, Starkenberg even allows visitors to soak in the suds, as the old vaulted cellar houses the world s first beer swimming pool, the ultimate experience for any beer enthusiast! Mon., Oct. 8 SEEFELD / CHICAGO (B,I) This morning we travel to Munich Airport in preparation for our return journey home.
