ATAS Accredited Agent # A10933 AFTA Member # 10986 Peter O Leary in association with Specialty Travel presents Far North Queensland in Spring Monday 9 - Sunday 15 October, 2017 (7 days) Join us for a very comprehensive tour of the best North Queensland has to offer! Based in the one motel for the entire 7 days! Day 1: Monday 9 th ARRIVE CAIRNS (D) Departing Rockhampton airport midmorning for our flight to Cairns where we are met and transferred to our accommodation. Our base for the next 7 days is Mareeba, the largest town on the Atherton Tablelands. It is the heart of Australia s thriving tropical fruits and coffee industry with a history dating back to gold mining. We arrive at our destination to unpack and settle in to our surrounds prior to dinner. Day 2: Tuesday 10 th DAINTREE (BLD) We are off to the Daintree Rainforest today. We make our way through to the tiny village of Mossman where we stop to view Mossman Gorge. The gorge forms the southern sector of the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest, the last remnant of the oldest surviving rainforest in the world. The area has one of the most ancient ecosystems on earth where more than 18,000 known plant species exists, some trees being more than 2,500 years old. Nearby is our next destination - the Daintree Station Experience. The station celebrates the spirit of wild outback Australia and the courage and determination of the men and women who carve their lives from the bush. Views of Port Douglas to the south and the stunning backdrop of the Daintree Rainforest greet us as we arrive at this beautiful cattle station. Join Nipper and the team on their rambling escapades as they bring us an authentic representation of a working cattle station, punctuated by whip-cracking humour, bulls and bulldust! Thundering hooves, dog whistles and cracking whips echo through the valley as wild brumbies and herds of cattle are mustered in for the action packed show. Real stockmen and women riding stunt horses with dogs, quad bikes and a bull catcher. The thrilling show is accompanied by a delicious barbecue lunch, live music and lively bush tales. We finish our Northern experience with a cruise on the Daintree River, through the beautiful rainforest of the Daintree. Our interesting day complete, we return to the Atherton Tablelands Day 3: Wednesday 11 th SAVANNAHLANDER & CHILLAGOE CAVES (BLD) This morning we are in for a treat. At the Mareeba Train Station we join the Savannahlander train for a journey through to Almaden. En-route we stop in Mutchilba for morning tea then continue to Dimbulah Station, where we have time to have a look at the museum that has been set up in the old station building. At lunchtime we arrive into Almaden, the end of our ride. Lunch is served at the Railway Hotel, located across the road from the station. Our afternoon is spent in the former mining town of Chillagoe. The town is a stunning mix of outback landscape, mining heritage, aboriginal art sites and fantastic limestone caves. The old township is still dominated by the Chillagoe smelters, built at the turn of the century by miners and speculators convinced the region was set to become the next Broken Hill. However mining is not the town s main attraction these days. In the Chillagoe Montana National Park we ll find the Chillagoe Caves which feature spectacular formations of limestone stalactites and stalagmites. This afternoon, we stop at The Hub which will give us information on the area before our guided tour through Cathedral Cave. For a good photo opportunity from the caves there's a walking track to the nearby Balancing Rock formation and some Aboriginal rock art. On conclusion of our tour we re-board the coach and return to Mareeba for a slightly later dinner.
-2- Day 4: Thursday 12 th KURANDA, TJAPUKAI & SUNSET CRUISE (BLD) This morning we have time to explore the unique rainforest village of Kuranda. We ll take a tour of the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary followed by time at leisure to enjoy a wander through the many market stalls. We then head down the Kuranda range to the coastal suburb of Yorkeys Knob. Here we have arranged a lovely lunch at the Yorkeys Knob Boating Club with fabulous views over the water and marina. This afternoon we enter the magical, mystical world of the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. For the first time an entire park has been dedicated to preserving and presenting authentic Aboriginal culture with the aid of modern technology. Enjoy 3 theatres, a museum, an art gallery and a traditional Aboriginal camp, combined to give us a complete and meaningful glimpse of the Tjapukai Aboriginal people s rich and ancient culture. Late afternoon we head to the Cairns reef terminal to join our Sunset Cruise. With waterways winding through a 300 square kilometre maze of mangroves, expect stunning scenery and a relaxing cruise with informative commentary. Back on dry land we enjoy dinner at one of Cairns lovely waterside dining spots, Dundee s Restaurant, then return to Mareeba. Day 5: Friday 13 th ATHERTON TABLELANDS (BLD) Following breakfast we head out to explore the local sights. Our first stop is just south of here at Walkamin to visit the Mt. Uncle Distillery. This is North Queensland s first and only distillery with a range of real 100% spirits and liqueurs produced on site. We are taken on a tour of the Distillery followed by a lovely morning tea from Bridges Café. Next we travel through the township of Atherton onto Herberton to visit the Herberton Historic Village. Showcasing Australia s rich and diverse history this outdoor pioneer museum is testament to an era that is long gone. The history of this museum is also closely tied with the township of Herberton and features many priceless antiques as well as buildings that have come from the town s ancestors. The Village currently has over 50 original buildings that date from Herberton s foundation years. Walking through the Village, visitors are given a sense of being in a real township complete with chemist, bottle collection, school, bank, grocer s store, frock salon, toy shop, mechanic, jail and more. We enjoy lunch here before making our way to Malanda. Malanda is synonymous throughout Queensland for their milk and cheese products. It is also where Nerada Tea has been established. We have a tour which shows us how tea is grown and harvested at one of Australia s largest tea plantations. We then have time to get to Millaa Millaa Falls which is 20mins away. After some time to enjoy the falls, we head back to Mareeba for dinner. Day 6: Sat 14 th PORT DOUGLAS & THE OUTER BARRIER REEF (BLD) We have a fabulous day planned today as we discover the unforgettable Outer Barrier Reef. For an experience of a lifetime, we board Quicksilver s wavepiercer catamaran which will take us to a reef at the very edge of Australia s Continental Shelf to an underwater world that is a dazzling kaleidoscope of colour and brilliance. At Agincourt Reef, a magnificent ribbon reef, we experience firsthand the magic that is the Great Barrier Reef. We can choose to snorkel or stay dry and explore the reef from the comfort of the semi-submarine, just one metre underwater. Watch the fish feeding from the unique underwater viewing platform and underwater observatory, or fly in a helicopter over the reef (diving and helicopter flights are optional and at own expense). Our airconditioned vessel is very comfortable and will glide across the water to the spacious platform floating at the reef s edge. We ll be given a talk by a Marine Biologist; all our questions answered and enjoy morning and afternoon tea and a smorgasbord lunch. We return to dry land after a spectacular day and drive back to our motel. We enjoy dinner out at the local club this evening for our final night on tour. Day 7: Sun 15 th CAIRNS TO HOME (B) With an early start today we farewell our hosts and transfer to the Cairns airport in preparation for boarding our return flights to Rockhampton. We arrive home by lunch time today having had a wonderful insight into life in Far North Queensland.
