THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento February 2018 Tuesday February 27, Roger Steel on Maples Our February Meeting brings Roger Steel back by popular demand to talk and show us everything to know about Japanese Maples. Roger always entertains us with easy to understand subject matter details with a little humor thrown in. The rumor has it he will be working on some very mature trees for our pleasure. We ll have a nice Japanese Maple for raffle too. Here s Roger last year telling us about Black Pine care.

We ll have our usual Pre-Meeting Study Group at 6:00. Please bring in a tree or two for advice and discussion. Show and Tell, bring us your early bloomers and early leaf deciduous trees. Renee will be presenting her version of the Formal Bonsai Display. At our last Meeting, Tuesday January 23, Dave Goscinski covered the Pre-Meeting Study Group and the Regular Meeting, first showing us bonsai basics and moving on to more advanced styling techniques. He told us about The Rules and gave us a bunch of examples, both near perfect trees and those that bent the rules a little in the interest of art. Dave s style always includes large amounts of audience participation and tonight was no exception. Show and Tell was a very impressive display of early blooms and winter silhouette.

We also had a tribute to our late Club Member George Brown who passed away in Texas last December. George was a great guy most of all, good at bonsai and always lit up our meetings with his commentary and humor. Walt gave a short talk and made a generous donation to the club in George s name. Lucy and Timm brought in trees that were originally George s. Paul put together his version of a Bonsai Formal Display. We tried several stands so we could see what differences we could see and feel from the display. Which do you like?
