HARVARD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 2018 WORLDWIDE TRAVEL PROGRAM WITH HARVARD STUDY LEADER JAMES J. MCCARTHY OF THE U.S. ARCTIC RESEARCH COMMISSION 2018 EXPEDITION CRUISE TO GREENLAND AND THE ARCTIC CIRCLE August 1 12, 2018

EXPEDITION CRUISE TO GREENLAND AND THE ARCTIC CIRCLE WITH JAMES J. MCCARTHY, ALEXANDER AGASSIZ PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY SAIL ABOVE THE ARCTIC CIRCLE AND ON TO GREENLAND, AN UNSULLIED WILDERNESS ON THE LARGEST ISLAND IN THE WORLD. FROM IQALUIT ON THE EAST COAST OF BAFFIN ISLAND IN CANADA TO THE WEST COAST OF Greenland, this 11-day adventure takes you through a spectacular wilderness of glaciers, mountains, fjords, and breathtaking icebergs. Venture into remote areas to observe a vast array of wildlife, including whales, seals, walruses, sea birds, and polar bears. Meet the exceptional people who live in Arctic communities and learn about the native Inuit cultures that have survived in this harsh landscape. The purpose-built One Ocean Voyager/Akademik Sergey Vavilov is an exclusively chartered expedition vessel that regularly conducts active science in the Polar Regions. Designed to be exceptionally stable, maneuverable, and quiet, this ship is an ideal platform for polar exploration, affording unique opportunities to chart through remote waters. The feel on board is casual and the entertainment is the magnificent Arctic landscape. With a maximum of just 86 passengers, you have unrestricted access to all landing sites with explorations by Zodiac in small groups. This is your opportunity to live like a scientist as you experience the real High Arctic. On the front cover: View from the bow. Above: Our vessel, the One Ocean Voyager/Akademik Sergey Vavilov TO BOOK A TRIP CALL 800-422-1636 OR VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/TRAVEL

HARVARD STUDY LEADER James J. McCarthy James J. McCarthy is the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Biological Oceanography at Harvard University. From 1982 until 2002 he served as director of Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology. He was one of three U.S. scientists who had held leadership roles in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change when it shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He also had major roles in the 2005 Arctic Climate Impact Assessment and the 2007 Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment. Appointed by President Obama to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, he also serves as chair of the Board of Directors of the Union of Concerned Scientists. McCarthy has lectured on more than a dozen trips to the high Arctic. James will be accompanied by his wife, Sue. They were co-masters of Pforzheimer House from 1996 until 2009; and they have led many Harvard trips together. GREENLAND CRUISE RATES Qeqertarssuaq BAFFIN ISLAND Pangnirtung boat start end Iqaluit Ilulissat Arctic Circle Kangerlussuaq Sunshine Fjord Cape Mercy From $8395 per person, double occupancy. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS One of the most enjoyable features of the One Ocean Voyager/Akademik Sergey Vavilov is the Captain s open bridge policy. You are welcome to spend time here an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy the spectacular views and observe officers navigate. Morning briefings and daily presentations by your study leaders and expedition team will cover a range of topics including history, anthropology, ecology, geology, marine biology, ornithology, flora and fauna, and contemporary issues in the Arctic. Shore excursions are by Zodiac transportation from the ship to the landing area, focusing on areaswith the greatest promise of wildlife or places of historical significance. At each landing a choice of activities will be offered, from vigorous hikes to Zodiac explorations or walks with photographers, historians, and naturalists. If you have had some previous experience, you can sign up to sea kayak through some of the world s most beautiful polar scenery. Please ask us for further information. SCHEDULE BY DAY B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner Greenland village (left) and polar bear (right) GETTING THERE Worldwide Quest will book your mandatory flights from Ottawa to Iqaluit and from Kangerlussuaq to Ottawa at the special expedition cruise rate. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1 MEET IN OTTAWA Meet in Ottawa. Join Expedition study leaders for an introductory presentation, followed by a welcome cocktail. THURSDAY, AUGUST 2 OTTAWA, ONTARIO TO IQALUIT, NUNAVUT Transfer to the Ottawa Airport for your flight to Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, located at the head of Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island. Upon arrival into Iqaluit, enjoy a walking tour of the town and board One Ocean Voyager/ Akademik Sergey Vavilov in the afternoon. Spend some time on the outer decks enjoying your new Arctic surroundings as you set sail into the remote Canadian Arctic. FRIDAY, AUGUST 3 MONUMENTAL ISLAND Your first excursion is to visit Monumental Island. Located in Davis Strait, it is a known location for spotting walrus. Explore by Zodiacs and search the shoreline for these fascinating creatures. Polar bears are often found here and frequently chase the walrus off their haul out and into the water. SATURDAY, AUGUST 4 PANGNIRTUNG Nestled in the heart of Cumberland Sound, the Place of the Bull Caribou is situated on a beautiful fjord in scenic mountainous terrain. This remote town is known for its traditional Inuit arts and crafts and a visit to the local arts centre is a highlight. Indigenous people have inhabited the land here for over 4,000 years, and evidence of the Thule, ancestors of the Inuit, can be found in the area. SUNDAY, AUGUST 5 CAPE MERCY Marking the northern headland of Cumberland Sound are the dramatic cliffs of Cape Mercy. As the Baffin Bay middle ice recedes throughout the summer, the stretch of Baffin coast from Cape Mercy to Cape Dyer is a great place to find polar bears coming ashore. Explore this region with the goal of hiking the shoreline ridges, paddling the bays, and zodiac cruising the ice in search of Arctic wildlife. MONDAY, AUGUST 6 SUNSHINE FJORD Sunshine Fjord straddles the Arctic Circle. Depending on the weather, you might cruise across the Circle on the ship, or perhaps venture across it in the Zodiacs. Those feeling particularly adventurous may choose to hike across this landmark on shore. Whichever way, it s a thrill to be above the Arctic Circle! FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/TRAVEL

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7 DAVIS STRAIT Set sail for the ice in Davis Strait in order to experience this dramatic transition zone. A vast variety of Arctic sea life inhabits this zone, so keep your eyes peeled for bearded, hooded, and ringed serals as well as polar bears and walrus. Perhaps you ll see a bowhead whale cruising the ice edge. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be in use to scan the ice looking for wildlife. If conditions permit, you ll be able to step on board a Zodiac to get into the ice and explore. Sailing away from the sea ice, direct your binoculars and scopes toward the west coast of Greenland to witness the endless stream of icebergs, a remarkable sight to behold. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8 QEQERTARSUAQ (DISKO ISLAND) A large island in the mouth of Disko Bay, Qeqertarsuaq is a site of both geologic and historic interest. A possible summer fishing camp for the Viking colonists in Greenland, mineral deposits containing native iron and hot springs are all features of this island. Venture to the southern coast, cruising the spectacular rock arches before visiting the town of Qeqertarsuaq. THURSDAY, AUGUST 9 ILULISSAT AND JAKOBSHAVN ICEFJORD One of the wonders of the world, the Jakobshavn Icefjord spews massive tabular icebergs out into Disko Bay. Navigate these towering icebergs by Zodiac as you approach. In the town of Ilulissat, enjoy a guided walking tour, watch a demonstration of ancient fishing methods, and visit the local history museum, which houses exhibits on polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. FRIDAY, AUGUST 10 SISIMIUT Explore the fjord behind Sisimiut before visiting the town. If you re lucky, you might meet a few of the traditional Greenlandic kayakers or see a demonstration of Eskimo Rolling by one of the former winners of the Greenland Kayaking Championships. Attend a presentation on current affairs in Greenland given by a leading politician and scholar. SATURDAY, AUGUST 11 SONDRE STROMFJORD One of the world s longest fjords, Sondre Stromfjord towers above the ship on either side as you sail through it. Today travel by 4WDvehicles to the Greenland Ice Cap; drive through an incredibly beautiful landscape of mountains, plains and semi-desert valleys en route. Near the Ice Cap, drive across the fantastic moraine landscape. At the end of the Zodiac cruise at Baffin Island road, walk to the Greenland Ice Cap and onto the vast ice sheet. Spend some time exploring this world of ice before returning to your vehicle. There are good chances of spotting reindeer, musk oxen, and many species of birds and flowers along the way. SUNDAY, AUGUST 12 KANGERLUSSUAQ (SONDRE STROMFJORD) Kangerlussuaq is home to one of the world s longest runways. Disembark in the morning and transfer to the airport for your charter flight back to Ottawa. IQALUIT EXTENSION Spend three days in Iqualuit. Take a guided tour of the city, with visits to the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, the Legislative Assembly, and the Iqaluit Fine Art Gallery and craft shops. Enjoy a full day excursion to Sylvia Grinnell Park to discover Thule archaeological sites. Gain an understanding of the local culture through a presentation on dog sledding in the Arctic. Please inquire for more information about the program. Please note: The Arctic is unpredictable, one of the many reasons it s spectacular. Our expedition ship allows us to modify our itinerary to take advantage of special sightings or alter our route depending on conditions in order to give you the best Arctic experience possible. Specific sites visited will depend on ice and weather conditions, and the itinerary will be updated throughout the voyage.
