PATA WHO WE ARE In the long run, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) expects an above-average increase for tourism in Asia. The United Nations agency estimates that tourism in this region will grow by 4 to 6 percent, while global growth will average only 3 to 4 percent. According to the Boston Consulting Group, this means that 40% of tourism expenditures worldwide will be collected in Asia. Especially for the German market with its continuing growth in long-haul travel, this region is also becoming increasingly relevant. The Pacific Asia Travel Association (www.pata.org), or PATA for short, is a non-profit organization established in 1952 in Honolulu, Hawai i. Its objective is to promote tourism to, within, and out of the Asian-Pacific region. More than one hundred Asian and Pacific countries, territories, and regions, in conjunction with major international tourism destinations, have given the founders initial idea a voice heard around the globe. Numerous institutions on the national, regional, and local levels, as well as more than 2,000 companies representing aviation, shipping, the hospitality industry, and the travel trade have turned PATA into one of the leading tourism organizations in the world. PATA s headquarters, originally located in San Francisco, California, have moved to Bangkok, Thailand. Regional offices are based in Beijing (PR of China), Dubai (Gulf Region), Macau (Asia), and Sydney (Pacific). Thirty-eight chapters or regional associations worldwide gather, pool, and share their truly global knowledge. The Germany Chapter, officially called PATA Deutschland e.v., is registered in Frankfurt as a non-profit organization and supported by its Administrative Office in Mainz. The main goal of PATA Deutschland e.v. is to represent the philosophy of the Pacific Asia Travel Association in Germany and to promote tourism from here to the Asian-Pacific region. In 2008, PATA Deutschland e.v. was honored with the Spirit of PATA Award as the best regional chapter within the association. Today, PATA Germany has more than 90 members from the various fields of the tourism industry, including airlines, tourist offices, hotel groups, and tour operators. For many years, fair organizers, tourism agencies, and service providers have also been part of the organization. 3
