WELCOME TO LAS VEGAS Las Vegas ( The Meadows in Spanish) was founded as a city on May 15, 1905. At that time, Las Vegas was only 19.18 square miles and had a population of approximately 800. The Las Vegas Valley has been named as the fastest growing area in the United States. The good climate, the economy, the job opportunities and the many amenities offered are some of the factors prompting our growth. Las Vegas is the largest metropolitan city in the United States that was founded in 20th century. Approximately 98% of Nevada is owned by the federal Government And the growth continues still. The latest population prediction in the Las Vegas valley is over 2 million people by 2008. As the valley runs out of commutable housing space, high rise condominiums dot the master plans for the Las Vegas of tomorrow. The average annual rainfall is 4.13 inches. Humidity stays around 29%. Problems: Because Las Vegas is in a valley, if heavy rainfall occurs, flooding may be the result. Employment EMPLOYMENT Growth in population comes hand-in-hand with great job potential and Las Vegas continues to boom with strong economic and employment opportunities. Since 1990, Las Vegas has also ranked number one in high-tech job growth (primarily high-tech services). Consequently, the Nevada labor force has increased by nearly 350,000 people in the last decade. Construction, distribution and trade, Financial Institutions, Gaming, Government, Manufacturing and High Technology, & Travel and Tourism are among the industries with the greatest job potential in Las Vegas. With 39.1 million visitors and 6.2 million convention delegates visiting Las Vegas in 2007, tourism and conventions continue to be the city s major industries. TRANSPORTATION Las Vegas is a hub for airlines, railroads, trucking and highways. Major and regional airlines find Las Vegas to be one of their most popular destinations. Las Vegas was founded as a railroad city. Because of its central location, it is still a principal on-route destination for the railroads. Las Vegas' convention and entertainment industries, together with unparalleled outdoor recreation, have stimulated phenomenal growth in Southern Nevada. Today, nearly half of all Las Vegas visitors arrive by air via McCarran International Airport, making it a major driving force in the Southern Nevada economy and one of the top ten busiest airports in the world. Income derived from aviation activity generates significant economic benefits estimated at 25 billion dollars a year. In addition to these tangible benefits, McCarran is a valuable community asset that links Southern Nevada to the national air transportation system and brings the world to Las Vegas. Private aviation is serviced at McCarran, the North Las Vegas Air Terminal and Sky Harbor Airport in Henderson. Limousine and taxi service is available 24 hours.
