HIGHLIGHTS Panama City, Miraflores Locks, Anton Valley, Gamboa Rainforest Resort, Emberá Indigenous Village Day 1: Monday, March 3, 2014 Panama City, Panama Check into the Crown Plaza on Avenue Manuel Espinosa Batista. Meet with your group this evening for an orientation. Day 2: Tuesday, March 4, 2014 Tour Begins-Panama City - Miraflores - Panama City - Anton Valley This morning, visit the Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre to view the Panama Canal and learn about its rich past, present and future as you watch ships traverse the lock system. Drive a short distance on the famed Pan- American Highway before heading up the mountains to Anton Valley, a community nestled inside the secondlargest volcanic crater in the world. Visit a local handicraft market and peruse artisan souvenirs made by indigenous peoples, including the mola embroidery of the Kuna Yala. Afterwards, check in to your hotel at the base of the mountains that make up the crater. (B, D) Day 3: Wednesday, March 5, 2014 Anton Valley Start the day with a visit to the Museum El Valle which houses a small collection ranging from geological wonders to pre-colombian art. Your next stop is a non-profit orchid nursery that dedicates itself to cultivating and conserving local and regional orchids. It houses over one hundred different types. Continue to the El Nispero Zoo, home of a large selection of endemic animals as well as some that are not found in any zoo outside Panama. There is also a conservation program for the critically endangered Panamanian Golden Frog, said to bring good luck to anyone who sees it. Your afternoon is free to continue exploring this charming mountain community. (B) Day 4: Thursday, March 6, 2014 Anton Valley - Gamboa Today, travel by bus to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. With an afternoon at leisure, perhaps enjoy the resort s pool and spa, soak in the sights and sounds from the hammock on your
balcony. You may choose to enjoy some options the resort has to offer that include fishing in Gatun Lake, or kayaking in the Panama Canal. (B, D) Day 5: Friday, March 7, 2014 Gamboa This morning, follow your guide on a nature walk through the resort s jungle forest and gardens for a chance to spot unique bird life as well as various flora and fauna. Set off for an excursion to an Emberá indigenous village. Board dugout canoes for a scenic ride up the Chagres River to a settlement of Emberá, the Keepers of the Rainforest. The Emberá strive to preserve their heritage and love to share their traditional techniques of home building and handicrafts, such as basket weaving and tagua nut carvings, with visitors. Join in their dances and partake in a simple lunch cooked traditionally. The remainder of your day is free to enjoy Gamboa Resort. (B, L) Day 6: Saturday, March 8, 2014 Gamboa - Panama City - Playa Bonita - Tour Ends Today you return to Panama City and spend your final day on tour in this cosmopolitan city. Visit the Mercado de Mariscos, a seafood market, and try fresh Panamanian ceviche. Continue to Casco Antiguo, the Old Quarter a UNESCO World Heritage site. A short walking tour down its cobblestoned streets showcases the Plaza de la Independencia, the Presidential Palace, the National Theatre and restored colonial churches & monuments. This afternoon, join your conference in Playa Bonita.
