Tom Fagan K7DF Section Manager (520) 574-1129 k7df@arrl.org www.az-arrl.org June 2010 YOUTH AND SCOUTING This has been a very active month. Attending the Show Low hamfest to coming home for my Eagle Court of Honor on the following Monday. Congratulations to, Alex Thompson KF7KKP on getting your Technician license. Alex who is 10 years old is the youngest son of Steve N7TX. Steve said Alex is talking about getting his General class license. Steve says I'm proud of him and glad to have another ham in the family. Lloyd N7GV and eight other hams from the Green Valley ARC volunteered at Camp Lawton in Tucson for the Catalina Council Cub Scout day camp. The winner of the ARRL Foundation, Central Arizona DX Association Scholarship is Elijah Brown, AD7ZJ of Kingman AZ. Congratulations Elijah. This award is worth $1000 In the first weekend of June, I was able to escape the heat and head up to the Show Low Hamfest. As of that hamfest I had hit my fourth year as an amateur radio operator, spending the time with my family and meeting tons of great people. To my joy, I was able to spend the extra time introducing seven Boy Scouts from the local troop to the wonders of amateur radio. Pat from AMSAT got several of the boys their first radio contacts, hearing from all over including ships stationed along the Texas coast, it was truly a great experience. Hams from all over the fest hooked up the troop with equipment and information to get them started on their way to earning there license. Wrapping up the day, I worked with them to finish up almost the entire Radio Merit badge, starting out with none of the requirements, to all but two remaining. Good luck on your trail through scouting! Jim Fagan KD7IDC Assistant Section Manager, youth and scouting. kd7idc@arrl.net AMATEUR RADIO WEEK Gov Jan Brewer will sign the Amateur Radio Week proclamation on June 22, 2010. Send me your articles. http://havasunews.com/articles/2010/06/18/your_news/doc4c1aee7029a0d895043180.txt PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICERS I am looking for prospective PIO's, we currently have 39 clubs in Arizona-less than one fourth have active PIO's-Some people who would like to be PIO's think you have to be a great writer-you DON'T!-all you need to do is tell about the many great things that are going on in Ham Radio-EVERY club has something going on that the public should know about, or would be interested in. It doesn't take a lot of time and in fact it is a lot of 1

fun. Give me a call, I am here to help you every step of the way. For more information please call me at: 740-341-7557 or via e-mail. Thanks and 73, Mike Floyd Public Information Coordinator W1HAT w1hat@arrl.net EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS It's JUNE already. In the valley it's almost gotten hot and up north, it's gotten WINDY! This winter and spring has been fairly wet, and that may spell disaster for the forests and deserts. We've had a couple relatively small wildfires, but thankfully they haven't really gotten legs. It's not for lack of trying, the winds have been brutal up along the I-40 corridor. I can't recall the last time we have closed the highway so many times for the winds, yet the wildfire teams have done an amazing job getting them contained quickly. It's probably a good time to go to the ARES Database and check to see if your information is still current. Have you added that new "capability" the new dual band radio gives you? Have you moved across town or upgraded you license since you created your account? Go to www.az-arrl.org/secure and either update your existing account, or create one! Make sure you fill out and SAVE each of the primary tabs, Registration, Equipment and Training. If you are active in Public Service, log your hours! Dust off your equipment, check your batteries, and give your equipment a test run, it's better done now rather than waiting for a real world emergency!
