Day 2 Joshua Tree National Park/Lake Havasu Hit the road and drive to Joshua Tree National Park which is known for its spectacular desert plants including Joshua trees, cactuses and Mojave yuccas. This California desert region is also famous for striking rock formations and towering mountain ranges. Cross the Colorado River to Lake Havasu. Day 3 Grand Canyon We turn north towards one of the world s seven wonders, the Grand Canyon. Here we have some time to enjoy a hike, take an optional helicopter flight and soak up the breathtaking views. Day 7 Cape Canaveral/Florida Coast Today there is an option to visit the John F Kennedy Space Centre and Cape Canaveral. Day 8 Fort Lauderdale/Miami After a stop in Fort Lauderdale, the Venice of America, we reach the bustling city of Miami with its colorful Art Deco District and exciting beach life. Day 2 Joshua Tree National Park Start with a drive through the hot deserts of Southern California. Stop along the way at Joshua Tree National Park known for its many spectacular desert plants and striking rock formations. Afterwards we cross the Colorado River and reach Laughlin, Nevada. Day 3 Grand Canyon Head to one of the world s seven wonders, the Grand Canyon. This breathtaking canyon is 450 km long, up to 30 km wide and 1.6 km deep. Go hiking or take a helicopter ride to see the breathtaking landscape. Days 4-5 Las Vegas Today we travel west through the Kaibab National Forest and on to Route 66. Your leader will show you how to set up camp for the first night before heading into town for an evening tour of the Washington monuments. Enjoy a full day to get out and explore Washington s many interesting - and free - museums and monuments. Head out on a walk to marvel at the White House, visit the Smithsonian Institute of Science or just stroll along the Mall. Whatever you choose to do, Washington DC never fails to leave an impression with its grand avenues and parks. Day 4 Finger Lakes Travel out through rural Pennsylvania heading towards the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Take a dip in the fresh lake waters - these are some of the USA s deepest lakes. Later there will be time to reminisce about your greatest moments of the summer around the campfire. Day 5 Niagara Falls Head to one of America s greatest natural wonders at Niagara Falls and be stunned by the sight of 2.5 million litres of water cascading every second. Get a personal view of the falls on the included Maid of the Mist boat tour. The roaring falls are sure to have a cooling effect even on the hottest of summer days. Days 6-7 New York Hit the road back to New York City and check into our hostel before hitting the town with your fellow camp travellers. This city never sleeps, so whatever you do is entirely up to you! Grab a slice of pizza and explore its eclectic streets by foot, enter a neon jungle in Times Square, find a quiet corner in Central Park or perhaps watch the sun set over Manhatten from the top of the Empire State Building - there truly is plenty to see and do during free time in New York. On the final day you can check out at your convenience. ITINERARY Day 1 Individual arrival and check-in after 3pm at our hostel. Days 2-3 Yosemite National Park Head towards Yosemite National Park with its awe-inspiring granite cliffs. Day 4 Sierra Nevada Drive along the Sierra Nevada. Days 5-6 Las Vegas Travel through Death Valley and on to glitzy Las Vegas. Days 7-8 Grand Canyon Head towards one of the world s seven wonders, the Grand Canyon. Hike the canyon and take an optional helicopter flight. Day 9 Monument Valley Travel to Monument Valley, part of the largest Indian Reservation in the USA. There is an optional Navajo-guided jeep tour. Day 10 Mesa Verde National Park Pass by Mexican Hat en route to Mesa Verde National Park to explore the largest cliff dwellings of the Anasazi Indians. Day 11 Santa Fe Travel through the Southern Ute Indian Reservation to Aztec Ruins National Monument, which is famous for its sandstone pueblo built approximately 1100 years before Christ. Continue on to New Mexico s capital, Santa Fe. Day 12 Carlsbad Caverns Head through the desert following the Pecos River to Carlsbad Caverns, one of the biggest caverns in the world. Day 13 San Antonio Traverse the width of Texas to San Antonio, the Mexico of the USA and home of the Alamo, an 18th century Spanish-Mexican fort. Day 14 Houston Travel on Trucker Highway 10 to Houston, the largest city in Texas. There is time for an optional visit to the NASA Space Center before camping near Houston. Days 15-16 New Orleans Be sure to see the French Quarter and Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Day 17 Memphis Drive across Mississippi to Memphis, home of the Blues. Day 18 Nashville Perhaps pay an optional visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Days 19-21 Washington DC Continue across the Appalachian Mountains to Washington DC.
