017687 756 Page 1 The is a 15 mile (3 km) long-distance walk in Northern England. Devised by Alfred Wainwright, the famous fell walker and guidebook writer, in 173, the path passes through three National Parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park. Wainwrights recommendation is that walkers dip their booted feet in the Irish Sea at St Bees and, at the end of the walk, in the North Sea at Robin Hood s Bay. The walk begins in the Lake District, taking in deep sided valleys, lake shores, and remote mountain passes. Next is the limestone country of the Yorkshire Dales, famous for its intricate field patterns and dry stone walls. The old market town of Richmond marks the end of the Dales before the path crosses the Vale of York and rises over the rolling moorland hills of the North York Moors. The uses public rights of way (public footpaths, tracks, and minor roads), permissive paths and access land, and it is one of the most popular of all the long-distance footpaths in the UK. 017687 756 Page 2 Why do this walk? Essential Info - The subject of a BBC series fronted by Julia Bradbury, the traverses England, from west coast to east coast, enabling you to explore the dramatic upland scenery of three National Parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park. - Challenge yourself as you walk from one coastline to another. This demanding routes starts beneath the red sandstone sea cliffs of St Bees and nearly two hundred miles later finishes on the beach of Robin Hood s Bay, traversing three National Parks along the way. - Along the way you will pass through some of England s finest villages, such as Grasmere, Richmond, and also Kirkby Stephen, in the beautiful Eden Valley, and is situated on the iconic Settle to Carlisle train line. - This route offers variety and contrast: uplands and lowlands, sharp peaks and lonely moorland, towns and country, limestone and granite country, beautiful wooded lakes and remote upland tarns, glorious natural features and fascinating remains of human occupation. - Take up Wainwrights recommendation to dip your feet in the Irish Sea at St Bees and, at the end of your walking holiday, in the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay. Length: From 6 days / 7 nights Full Route Length: 15 miles / 317 km Shortest Break Length: 84 miles / 5 km Challenging Grade This is a long trail with some remote and mountainous sections. It is however completed by thousands of ordinary people every year. A degree of walking fitness, the right equipment and common sense should get you there! Terrain Most of the route is on well defined, not overly challenging paths, but not all of it! The walk passes over some of the high fells of the Lake District and over open, often remote moorland in the Dales and North York Moors. What s it like underfoot? The route takes paths which are at times muddy, wet, rough, and steep (although not often all at the same time)! Navigation Bad weather can be encountered, even in the summer months, so the ability to navigate is essential. You may be lucky enough to encounter warm, dry weather over the whole route and enjoy dry paths and tremendous views. Although you must always be prepared because the weather can change quickly. To book visit or call 017687 756

017687 756 Page 3 Our holidays As well as the whole path, we also offer the first and the second half as shorter options for your walking holiday. Both of the shorter options are are well worth undertaking in their own right, or you could do half the route now and the other half at a later date. If you opt to walk the whole path then there are five options for you to choose from depending on the pace you prefer and your overall level of fitness. Route The Whole Path We offer five walking holidays that cover the whole route. The shorter holiday is a taxing walk in days which is only for the seriously fit, however, the 17-day walking holiday is a much more leisurely paced experience. Lakes and Mountains - St Bees to Kirkby Stephen We offer two walking holiday options whereby you can traverse west to east across the Lake District taking in most of the major lakes, valleys and mountain ranges of the North Lake District. This is a great route taking in many of the highlights of the Lake District. Dales and Moors - Kirkby Stephen to Robin Hoods Bay This is the second half of the walk, taking in the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, and finishing on the Yorkshire coast. From Kirkby Stephen at the head of the Vale of Eden, the route climbs into upper Swaledale, one of the longest and most remote areas of the Yorkshire Dales. It follows the dale along riverside paths and across moors to the historic market town of Richmond, and then continues through the North York Moors to the North Sea. To book visit or call 017687 756

Robin Hood's Bay This picturesque village is a hidden gem on the East Yorkshire Coast consisting of a maze of tiny streets with individual shops, cafes and pubs and a tradition of smuggling - there is reputed to be a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. During the late th century smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast. The rocks of Robin Hood s Bay play host to a wealth of Jurassic history and fossilling is a wonderful activity for people of all ages along the huge, unspoilt beach.
