CONTEXT AND LOCATION The Democratic republic of Congo is estimated to have $24 trillion worth of untapped deposits if minerals, including the world s largest reserves of coltan and cobalt. Katanga Province Size : 496,871 km² in comparison to size of France : 551,500 km². Katanga Province produces 60% of the worlds cobalt. Cobalt is one of the world's essential elements and is primarily used in aircraft engines and rechargeable batteries (49% of demand for cobalt consumption is destined to this end). Solid future growth in global battery demand will support cobalt consumption and prices for decades to come. Katanga Province (1,000,000 tons ) produces more copper than Canada (720,000 tons). Lubumbashi is the capital of the Katanga Province in the DRC and 2nd largest city in the country.
