Growth Transport Research & Development the urban footprint getting around future living Townsville is now a city of over a million people. It has grown significantly on the back of tourism, its beautiful location, the tropical climate, and its world renown in the areas of research and development, and of course, as the Gateway to Asia and the rest of Australia. Trade with Asia has become a defining feature of the economy, facilitated by the new Port, International Airport at Bohle, the new commerce hub at Rowes Bay, and the Tropical Research and Education Centre. To accommodate the growing population, city planning wisely limited the urban footprint and concentrated growth around a few major hubs, each of which is focussed on a strategic sector of Townsville s new economy. The hubs are multi-functional and provide an interconnected network of employment, transport, commerce, entertainment, education, agriculture and residential city life. This elevated light rail system connects the main growth hubs efficiently, and also provides residential accommodation, retail and commerce, urban agriculture, and renewable energy production. For the most part, The Artery is built over the existing trunk collector road corridor. The spaces under are still used as roads and pedestrian use, as well as greenhouse and hydroponic farming.
