Proudy ceebrating 50 years of serving our customers and the word

A two-ane country road, 10,000 acres surrounded by rich farmand and a promising vision of aviation s future. those were the eements in the mix in 1958 when President Dwight eisenhower seected the site of the Washington region s second Airport. Fast-forward 50 years. ook at the region s growth: it paraes the emergence of Washington Dues internationa Airport, which now has 139 airine gates and 198 mies of roads. this year, internationa passengers can choose from amost 500 fight departures to amost 50 internationa destinations per week every week at Dues. Domesticay, there are 7 airines fying to 85 destinations, approximatey 300 departures a day. When the Airport cut its gistening red ribbon in 1962, it reeed in 52,846 passengers during its inaugura year, which was pretty good for the first Airport in the country designed for commercia jets. it was a modern marve, compete with an architecturay subime futuristic termina buiding designed by Finnish mastermind eero saarinen. But review the numbers now: More than 23 miion passengers annuay, with 25 percent of those passengers traveing on internationa fights. We ve seen tremendous economic deveopment in this region, and it has been driven by transportation, says Jack Potter, President and Chief executive officer of the Metropoitan Washington Airports Authority. so, yes, this is a story about a revoutionary vision. But, as you read over the foowing pages, it s aso a story about peope, panning and growth, and how those factors continue to pay a critica roe in Dues internationa as it boosts the region s economy and gears up for a future that wi be just as ceebrated as its past.

Whether it was the roout of the expanded internationa Arrivas Buiding, the seamess integration of our termina extension or the introduction of the Aerotrain, it was essentia that we kept the Airport community connected with a of the changes and that customers coud sti get from point A to point B smoothy. ooking back, i d say we pued it off exceptionay we! i m honored to contribute, in a sma way, to such a great and friendy Airport. The Airport is a unique environment for poicing. I am assigned to the midnight shift, so some nights my beat is in the termina, and some nights it s on the To Road and Access Road. We hep TSA, we respond to assist Customs, and we get a ot of unattendedbag cas. We re here to hep peope get from point A to point B as safey as possibe. I take a coupe extra seconds to hep them get where they re going, because we a need our vacations. Every day I see peope go by and think, it woud be great to tag aong. Jeff Jones Poice Corpora Metropoitan Washington Airports Authority 17 years at Dues Dream trip: Ireand Our Word: Coser Than Ever When it comes to goba impact, how does Dues make its mark? To Chris Browne, Vice President and Airport Manager at Dues, it s a about the age-od idea of connecting peope and, in this case, across countries and continents for commerce and business and eisure trave. Caing the Airport a gateway to the word seems ciché unti it becomes apparent that the gobe ooks at Dues as just that a way to deveop reationships and expore the panet. Browne says it s fairy simpe: The ony means of connecting the goba community to Washington and our region is Dues Airport. Just this year, the Airport added daiy service to Dubai on Emirates; Mexico City on Aeromexico; Toronto on Porter; and Doha, Manches- Dues ter, Dubin and San Savador (in December) on United. is Next year, daiy nonstop service wi begin on Etihad marketing itsef as an import hub that woud Airways to Abu Dhabi. aow cargo to bypass Miami and enter the By next March, Dues wi have 41 Midde Eastern U.S. in the Mid- Atantic region. fights per week, surpassing the current number at John F. Mark Treadaway, Vice President of Air Service Panning and Deveopment for the Airports Authority, says aong with the increasing demands of internationa business traveers, the rich cutura diversity of the Washington region aso contributes to the expansion of overseas air service. This segment is caed VFR visiting friends and reatives. We reay are a goba economy, Treadaway says. I was working for minimum wage at my unce s gas station in 1983 when I got the job as a feet service cerk at Dues. So I was oading cargo, mai, freight, baggage, whatever goes on the pane. I thought I d died and gone to heaven! I ove the outdoors, I ike working with big equipment, and I enjoy the peope. Four years ago, I became a crew chief. A perfect day is 75 degrees, computers and panes are working, you have a fu crew in the cabin and cockpit, and nobody cas in sick. Over the years I ve seen a sorts of things being oaded onto panes Lamborghinis, monkeys, aigators if you can fit it in the door, we take it. Dennis Fincham Ramp Crew Chief American Airines 29 years at Dues 29 years at American Dream trip: Hawaii Our Growth: Steady and Smart Remember those 10,000 acres mentioned earier? Ony a portion of the and has been used with more impressive deveopment to foow. If you ook at the Eastern seaboard Airports Phiadephia, Boston, Newark, Miami many of them are fuy buit to their master pan, says Browne. In other words, they wi not be abe to spread their wings ike Dues. When Dues is fuy buit out in the years ahead, it wi be abe to accommodate 40 miion passengers annuay. Dues has put itsef in a soid position by recenty competing the Dues Deveopment Program, caed D2, a 12-year initiative that deivered everything from a fourth runway and a gorgeous new concourse to an expanded Arrivas Buiding and the crown jewe, the seek $1.7 biion AeroTrain system. When the Metrorai extension to Dues is competed, the Airport wi have even greater connectivity to the Metropoitan Washington region. To someone ike Michae Curto, the Airports Authority s board chairman and a Washington native, seeing the growth of Dues has been astounding. As a chid, a car ride to Dues seemed ike a Super hubs used to be ony ong road trip to a foreign and! The growth you see today European or Asian required panners who were ike great chess masters. Now the focus has shifted to incude had to think four or five moves ahead to pan for future the Midde East specificay Dubai, deveopment of the Airport, which woud utimatey impact Doha and Abu Dhabi. the region. Curto and other Airport eaders continue to position Dues to take advantage of its gateway status. With passenger growth at the Airport, the economy of the region wi grow exponentiay. Dues wi continue to grow as the porta through which businesses and peope arrive, he says. Our Impact: Numbers Don t Lie How does Dues truy impact the region? James Widing, who was President and CEO of the Airports Authority from 1987 2003 says: If you cose your eyes and try to imagine the Washington region without Dues, it s amost impossibe to do. Jim Dinegar, president and CEO of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, says one cue stems from a powerfu moniker. The fact that it s known as the Dues Corridor is significant! Not every transportation hub in the word can ay caim to such a dynamic business and technoogy center, he says. The Corridor, which generay foows the 16-mie Dues Access Road, has become synonymous with technoogy, growth and economic deveopment. Another first was recorded earier this year Dues became the first destination of the Boeing 747-8, the word s ongest passenger aircraft. Professor Kenneth Button, director of George Mason University s Center for Transportation, Poicy, Operations and Logistics, agrees and says Dues has been perfecty situated to spur growth in the region. When I started here in the 70s, the biggest thing I had to worry about was hitting a cow. At some point on the highway, you re a itte bit eevated, and you ook out over those fieds and see this unusua, beautifuy designed Airport. At that time, Airport security was a tabe set up outside the mobie ounges so they coud ook in your handbag. So much has changed. It s an exciting time to be working at Dues. There s so much growth. I aways wanted to work for an airine, because I wanted to trave. I d started in reservations in Chicago, and I requested Washington. They said I coud go to Dues or Reagan Nationa, and I didn t know anything about either. I said, We, I hear Dues is out in the country. There was so much open space, and you knew everyone who worked here. Now Dues is ike a city. I ove heping peope from a over the word. Maureen Doscher Customer Service Agent Deta Air Lines 26 years at Dues 34 years at Deta Next trip: Singapore The Airport is near the nation s capita, and it s surrounded by a highy skied workforce and peope with a very high income eve who tend to fy more and add to the bottom ine of the region s businesses, Button says. Earier this year, Dues became the first destination of the coossa Boeing 747-8, a modern version of the cassic internationa aircraft. Dues is one of the few airports in the United States that has daiy service on the Airbus A380, the word s argest passenger aircraft. The Airports Authority President and CEO Jack Potter says he s aso ooking forward to the Boeing 787 and its impact on the oca economy. Dues has the adaptabiity for virtuay anything, he says. Whatever ese is coming in the future, the Airport can hande it. That s especiay true for internationa passengers, where we re uniquey positioned to grow. That growth, in turn, moves Dues coser to word markets. When two popuation centers come within a day s journey typicay 12 hours there s an upsurge in trave and trade between them, stimuating economic growth at either end, says Leo Schefer, president of the Washington Airports Task Force. That s the future of Dues and, to a arge extent, the nation s capita. Our Services: Ready for a Revoution In a region that is one of America s eaders in high tech, consuting and a host of other progressive services, what s next? Get ready for cargo. Cargo has aways been a critica aspect of passenger trave, Dues even though most of us never see it. According to Joe May, is especiay attractive head of air cargo deveopment for the Airports Authority, it s for internationa shipping companies about to take on an even bigger roe at Dues. because it can deiver overnight to more than Currenty, Dues moves 305,000 tons 56 percent of the of cargo in the beies of passenger panes every year. Top U.S. popuation. exports incude eectrica machinery, optica and medica equipment, pharmaceuticas, computer hardware and software, and communications equipment. We re reay excited about our unique position aong the Eastern seaboard, May says. We have more than 400 acres of airport and avaiabe for cargo deveopment, and that sets us apart from other Airports on the East Coast. We have the opportunity to deveop this and based on a cargo focus, with storage and cooing faciities, which wi spur a ot of economic deveopment in the region. The first time I came to the Airport, I was ooking for a job. I saw a shoe shine guy, and he ended up hiring me. I earned everything from him. I worked for him and then opened my own business. Now I have two Airport stands, and in 20 years I have served 250,000 pair of shoes. Fifty to 75 percent of my cients are peope fying business or first cass, and they need to ook sharp a the way. Some of them I see three times a month, and I get to know them. I treat everyone as someone famous. With my shoe shines, you re not ony getting the shine; you re getting an experience. I ca it art. The Airports Authority is aso working on bringing an a-cargo internationa carrier to Dues in the next year. We re we positioned here with the high-tech industry and the federa government, May says. There wi never be a shortage of high-vaue commodities that need to be moved quicky in and out of this area. And that s good news for us. The Skies Ahead: Customers First Amid the panning, the deveopment and the internationa recognition, one factor continues to guide Dues : service. As you read the vignettes from empoyees throughout this specia section, you note that service to passengers resonates above a other themes it has been part of the Airport Authority s core vaues from day one, and it continues to guide every improvement that is made to Dues. In the decades ahead, more change is inevitabe at the Airport, with new directions even futurists can t predict. Yet, for the peope who ca Dues home from poice officers and baggage handers to airine empoyees and ramp crew the mission of heping you enjoy your experience at Dues wi aways be the highest priority. Peope wi aways yearn to expore the word and we re proud to be the first step in one exciting journey after another, says Chris Browne.
