2018 Summer Camps At the Lancaster County Environmental Center Registration Opens March 12, 2018 You & Me: Ages 3 & 4 with an Adult Partner Nature Exploration June 12 th & 14 th from 9:00 10:30 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) $25 per camper/adult combo, ages 3 & 4 You & Me camps are perfect for young children that aren t quite ready for an extended amount of time away from Mom and Dad. This week is designed with the littlest explorers in mind. They ll engage their creative spirit with crafts, burn off some of their boundless energy in structured play, explore the natural areas around the Environmental Center, and take memories and stories of their daily adventures home with them. Backyard Critters August 21 st & 23 rd from 9:00 10:30 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) $25 per camper/adult combo, ages 3 & 4 You & Me camps are perfect for young children that aren t quite ready for an extended amount of time away from Mom and Dad. Using their senses, exploration, games, crafts, stories and structured play, our youngest campers and their adult partner will learn about birds, animals, insects and other critters that call your backyard home. Pre-school: Ages 4-5 Big World of Bugs June 11 th, 13 th & 15 th from 9:00 11:00 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) Bugs inhabit every corner and crevice of the world, and they come in every shape, color, and size. Preschool kids will search for, and collect insects to learn about their body parts, their homes, and their habits. Together we will play games, make bug catchers to collect our own insects at home, and complete a craft that teaches the magic of metamorphosis. Creatures of the Night June 26 th, 27 th & 28 th from 9:00 11:00 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) Bats, owls, opossums, raccoons and many other nocturnal creatures roam our countryside after the sun goes down. Children will learn about these animals, why they prefer the night and the adaptations that help them survive life in the dark.
Backyard Critters July 10 th, 11 th & 12 th from 9:00 11:00 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) Bears, mice, and even people-we're all mammals! What other animals are furry critters like us? Preschoolers will discover the mammals in their own backyards through hands-on discovery with puppets and pelts, and through curiosity-sparking habitat walks, games, and crafts. Water! August 7 th, 8 th & 9 th from 9:00 11:00 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) Water is everywhere and many creatures call it home! Campers will explore the creek and pond near the Environmental Center to search for insects, invertebrates, plants and amphibians. They will learn about these unique organisms and how water is essential to all life on earth through stories, games, microscopes, and other hands-on activities and experiments. Slithery, Slimy, Scaly August 20 th, 22 nd & 24 th from 9:00 11:00 a.m. (EC 2 nd floor) Interested in reptiles and amphibians? Campers will explore Lancaster County Central Park to look for and learn about some of Pennsylvania s slithery, slimy, scaly inhabitants. Also included is a visit from a local herpetologist, when campers will be able to meet a live snake, frog, and salamander. Explorers: Ages 6 8 Elements of Nature June 18 th 22 nd from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (EC 1 st floor) Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Space. We will explore the basic elements of nature through experiments, games and outdoor activities. Each day we will focus on one element, learn how they work, how they can be so destructive, how they affect us, and how we affect them. These elements are all around us, so let's get in touch!
Insects & Spiders June 25 th 29 th from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (Pavilion 2) $86 per camper, age 6-8; must have completed kindergarten Six legs versus eight, webs versus wings. We can learn about the unique habits and abilities of different kinds of insects and spiders in Central Park! We ll search for critters in the field, forest, and stream to learn about pesky invasive species, valuable pollinators, and more! Rocks and Fossils July 9 th July 13 th from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (EC 1 st floor) $92 per camper, ages 6-8; must have completed kindergarten Do you have a budding geologist on your hands? Rocks and Fossils is the camp for them. Children will hike to discover Central Park geology, collect rocks, and test the physical properties of minerals. We will visit Indian Echo Caverns, discover that sands are not all the same, and exercise creativity with sand art and pet rocks. Child vs. Wild July 16 th 20 th OR July 30 th August 3 rd from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (EC 2 nd floor) Welcome to Survival Camp for younger children! Campers will learn fire safety, shelter building, safe versus poisonous plants, hiking basics, cooking over the fire and much more. Children will also observe and explore the skills that local animals use to survive in the environment. Slithery, Slimy, Creepy Crawly Critters July 23 rd 27 th from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (EC 1 st floor) Participants can explore the streams, woods, and fields of Lancaster County Central Park to discover reptiles, amphibians, and insects who live nearby. Campers can also enjoy a special visit from a local herpetologist, when they will meet a live snake, frog, and salamander. Best of Summer Day Camp August 6 th 10 th from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. AND/OR 12:30 3:30 p.m. (EC 1 st floor) $86 per camper for a half day (morning or afternoon) / $154 for a full day, ages 6-8 must have completed kindergarten How would you like to take part in a game of Capture the Flag? This camp will focus on classic games and all the favorite summer camp activities. Come and play games
like whiffle ball, four square and kick the can. Spend time with other campers while fishing, exploring the creek, hiking and swimming in the Central Park Pool (afternoons only). Morning campers will take a field trip to Go N Bananas as we fit the best of summer into one fun-filled week! Wacky Water August 13 th 17 th from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (EC 1 st floor) Participants will be able to get their feet wet while discovering our watery world with daily aquatic explorations and a stream visit to search for insects, invertebrates, plants and amphibians. Try some water experiments, make bubble pie, and explore the water cycle with your camper friends! Intermediate: Ages 9-11 Survival in Central Park June 18 th 22 nd OR July 23 rd 27 th from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. (EC 2 nd floor) $154 per camper, ages 9-11 If you like to play and learn in the woods, this is the camp for you! Campers will learn and practice survival skills including shelter building, fire-starting, campfire cooking, navigation, water purification, basic first aid, wild edibles and more. Campers will have the opportunity to search Mill Creek for edible wildlife and to simply cool off. Join us for a week of fun with survival! Discover the Night June 25 th 28 th (M TH) from 6:30 9:30 p.m. (EC 2 nd floor) $76 per camper, ages 9-11 When the sun goes down, a whole new world comes to life. From bats, moths, frogs and flying squirrels to shooting stars and constellations, we will immerse ourselves in the mysterious night life of Central Park. Activities will include dissecting owl pellets, night hikes, stargazing, and camp fires. Ultimate: Ages 11-13 Ultimate Scientist June 25 th 29 th from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. (EC 1st floor) $165 per camper, ages 11 to 13 Ultimate Scientist Camp will offer a taste of several science disciplines for kids aged 11 to 13. Campers will explore geology at
the Falmouth potholes and Indian Echo Caverns, discover wetlands and streams at Climber s Run, and explore habitats at Speedwell Forge County Park. Campers will have the opportunity to examine fish with a visit to That Fish Place and the hands-on dissection of a perch. We will also do some experimenting with dry ice and more. Ultimate Adventure July 16 th 20 TH from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. (Pavilion 21) OR July 30 th August 3 rd from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. (Pavilion 3) $185 per camper, ages 11 to 13 For active kids ages 11 to 13, Ultimate Adventure Camp offers a different experience every day. Weather permitting, campers will go tubing at *Sickman s Mill, hiking at Rocky Ridge County Park, kayaking, hiking, and swimming at Gifford Pinchot State Park, climbing at Reading Rocks, geocaching in Lancaster County Central Park, and more. Campers will also have time to cool off at our local Central Park Pool. Activities will be challenging and kids need to be prepared for full, active days. *Tubing subject to change pending PennDOT bridge construction. If necessary, Tucquan Glen will replace tubing.
