Well it s June and the summer is upon us. I would like to open this month s message on a somber note. As many of you may know June Nash was hospitalized last month with some serious health issues and I would like to report she has made remarkable strides and with our hopes and prayers hopefully should enjoy a full recovery. I know June is well on her way as she was running the Social Committee from her physical therapy. As you are reading this a new Board of Directors will have taken the Gator helm, as follows: Sheri Agnew VP Ski Trips; Betty Williams VP Socials; Connie Flow VP Special Activities; Tammy Walkoff Secretary; Pam Strickland Member at Large. Rounding out (no pun intended) the Board will be the old (pun intended) reliables: Walter Marussich-Treasurer; Bruce Holtzman Past President; Paul LaChance Past President Liaison; and Yours truly. Now, on to something near and dear to all Gators and that would be (drum roll please)... Happy Hours! Super Duper Ones! Take the Happy Hour at Carmines Ocean Grill. There must have been over 50 Gators present, enjoying half price drinks, free sushi, and other delectable tidbits. An awesome time was had by all at a very high class and beautiful restaurant overlooking the yachts of Soveril Marina. A big thanks to Letti Falko who brought the Gator sign and recruitment cards, and a super big thanks to Daper David Schue for scheduling and organizing all our Happy Hours! I would like to close with a HUGE thank you to some of the unsung, but not under-appreciated Gators who constantly give of themselves for the good of the club. Meryl Hartman organized and lead the Gator Float and contingent in the North Palm Beach Heritage Day Parade. Ann Ganzel was chairperson for the Red, White and Blue Chili Cookoff. Ben Smith arranges all of the Leisure Bike Rides. Allen Trefry provides the warm and happy welcome for all meetings, complete with name tags and chocolates. And lastly, to all of you who make our club the happy fun loving group we are! Gator Snow Ski & Activities Club Ski Trips GARMISCH, GERMANY (Florida Ski Council European Trip) March 8-14, 2014 Garmisch is a fabulous European destination for the GATORS. There is plenty of skiing and day trips with sightseeing with an abundance of restaurants and pubs mixed in. The full name of the area is Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Upon arrival into Munich, we will bus directly to Garmisch for an orientation tour of the two villages. We will visit the Classic Ski Area, where we can also take care of the ski rentals and pass by each of the FSC hotels so that everyone will have a better idea of where they are in proximity to the village, their hotel and the ski areas. Many of us are doing a post trip extension to Munich. If not doing the post trip extension, we can do a day tour there from Garmisch. Skiing: Access to skiing is within 15-20 minutes of our hotel using the ski bus or train. There two different ski areas. The Classic area will provide adequate skiing for two full days. Garmisch s biggest ski draw is the Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany. It is accessed by a scenic cogwheel train or cable car and enjoyable in itself. The top views are fabulous. Ski area Garmisch-Classic - Scene of FIS Ski World Championships 2011 and annual FIS Ski World Cup Race with famous Kandahar Slope - 3 connected ski mountains with about 25 miles (40 km) of slopes - Altitude of 2,297 6,725 feet (700 2,050 m) - 3 cable cars - 13 lifts, 5 snow-covered ski runs into the valley Hotel: Our lodging is a 4 star hotel with ample Bavarian flavor, an experience of genuine Bavarian ambiance. Bring your 220V adapters. A full breakfast at the hotel every day is included. Day Trips: Some day trips are close by. Tour and hike to the top of the Olympic Ski Jump. Walk through the Partnach Gorge, very impressive. The path is cut down inside the gorge and is very narrow in places. It is possible to arrive by horse drawn carriage and a nice restaurant is nearby for lunch. Both these are right in Garmisch. Other day trips by bus include Oberammergau, the Passion Play Theater, Ettal Monastery, King Ludwig s Linderhof Castle, Neuschwanstein, Munich and more. Non-skiers would have plenty to do with multiple options. Extension Trip Option: After visiting Bavaria, an optional trip to Munich or Berlin. Ski area Glacier Zugspitze - Highest mountain of Germany with about 10,000 feet (almost 3,000 m) - Highest ski area of Germany - The only glacier of Germany - Glacier ski area with about 15 miles (22 km) of Garmisch will be a great place to revive the Europe trips for the GATORS & FSC! Contact Trip Leader: Don Chalaire, 561-714-3528 donchal@comcast.net Dear Gators, Most of you have heard by now I had a major Stroke on April 22, my recovery has come along faster than the doctors expected. I am sure because of all your prayers and get well wishes. I consider you all my family and the out pouring of concern and love has been overwhelming and humbling. The flowers and cards are still coming so every day is another wonderful surprise that brightens my days and encourages me to keep working at my therapy so I can return to all our wonderful adventures. My Social Committee stepped up to help with the membership picnic and made it another wonderful fun afternoon. We signed up new members and old members rejoined in record numbers. You're new and past board stepped in and worked like dogs to make everyone's day great. The new Social VP. Betty Williams decorated and ran around organizing like no other. I am sure she will keep all of you entertained in the near future. My regret is I was not able to help it was so strange to just sit and watch every one else work. Those that know me well knew it was hard to just sit. Thanks to all for the help. I will be in touch with all that wished me well on a personal level the list is long but I intend to keep in touch. As soon as I am able I will be back at helping keep our club going with fun things to do. If you have not participated much in our social events you have missed some great fun so get going and make sure you meet as many of my Gator Family as you can they made me well by their prayers and constant attention there are no better people anywhere. Love you all, June Nash, VP Socials
