Along the way of course, we will stop for coffee and Strudel and all things nice!
We pass the Reschen Reservoir where you will see only the church steeple that remains after villages of Graun and partly Reschen plus the ancient hamlets of Alrund, Piz, Gorf and Stockerhofe (St.Valentin) were extinguished by flooding the whole valley. On to Stelvio Pass - the Stelvio Pass is one of the highest Alpine Passes of Europe at 2758 m. There are 48 hairpin turns on the northern side of the pass. The original road was built in 1820-1825 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardia with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1871 m. Since then, the route has changed very little. The 60 hairpin bends, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists and motorcyclists alike!
After a truly exhilarating ride, we will head for Livigno our place of rest for the night. Livigno is a tax free zone, so we will fill the bikes here with cheap petrol for the ride tomorrow. Our Hotel for the night is famous for its good quality food. Day 4: Monday 9 July On Monday we leave Livino in Italy and our destination for the day is Untervellach in Austria. It is a long ride and rather tiring, so make sure you are fit. And, because we all enjoyed Stelvio so much on Sunday, we do it again today, from the other side. There will be a lot less traffic today, being Monday, so have fun in the pass!
