ECUADOR AND THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Darwin's laboratory, stunning mountains and cultural treats Tour Code: 45400 Grade SS/4 Holiday Duration: 15 nights HOLIDAY DATES 6th May 2018-21st May 2018 Exploring and the Galapagos where on each island we ll walk with an expert naturalist guide HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS Coming face to face with a Galapagos sea lion. Walking under Chimborazo. Exploring Cuenca and Quito - beautiful colonial cities. Perusing Saquisili Market - a huge market for locals selling every kind of local produce. Enjoying a walk amongst the lakes in the Cajas National Park. Look out for the llamas and alpacas.

and the Galapagos Islands Imagine an early stroll along the quay in Puerto Ayora, the pelicans gathering in hope of some fisherman's scraps. Or picture the sun rising across snow covered Chimborazo on the barren altiplano. Perhaps the most diverse of all our Latin American holidays this is as good a microcosm of the best of Latin America as you will find. Starting in the Andes at Quito, the most charismatic of capitals we head south along the corridor of volcanoes, walking under Chimborazo (6,263m). You will learn how the summit of Chimborazo is the furthest point on earth from its centre. Taking a ride on the Devil's Nose train is another highlight. We have many opportunities to observe and learn more of local life visiting homes, markets and communities along the way. Cuenca is a beautifully preserved colonial city well worth exploring. Continuing from here we walk in the Cajas National Park. At over 3500m this lakeland landscape will be at the highest altitude we will reach on this tour. We fly to Baltra Island, a small island of the Galapagos have lunch in our Puerto Ayora hotel before taking a boat for the two hour journey to Isabella Island. For our first island treat we pass a flamingo lake on the way to the hotel. We visit Sierra Negra Volcano, the 2nd largest volcanic crater in the world, visit a turtle interpretation centre and hopefully encounter a myriad of diverse Galapagos wildlife. HOLIDAY GRADE This Grade 4 moderate holiday includes full and half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain and is likely to include an element of sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m. See the Walks & Excursions section for more information. Sightseeing The sightseeing element of the holiday will be significant allowing you to get a good feel for the sites and sights as well as the trails of the destination. Wildlife Holiday Our wildlife holidays bring you close to nature at its most captivating. Returning to Puerto Ayora we explore the area and spend a day, travelling by boat, to one of the other islands with more diverse habitat, flora and fauna. On each island we'll walk with an expert naturalist guide to make sure we get plenty of exercise whilst enjoying the huge natural diversity of each island for which the Galapagos are world famous, including sightings of Sea Iguanas and Blue Footed Boobies. WHATS INCLUDED Return flights Heathrow to Quito via Madrid both ways (Iberia Airlines) Internal flights Guayaquil to Baltra (Aerogal) Airport transfers. B&B en suite accommodation. Dinners at the hotels or local restaurants. Local guide throughout. Specialist wildlife guides in Galapagos. All local transport costs.

In flight meals, if appropriate, will be advised in your final travel documents Day: 1 - Quito (D) We fly to Quito via Madrid. Later we venture out of the city to La Mitad del Mundo, the place were the position of the equator was first measured. We return to our hotel in Quito for dinner Day: 3 - Lasso (B,D) Leaving Quito we drive up to the Antisana National Park, for a gentle hike. The altitude here is around 3,300m and our walking will take account of this. The park is renowned for spectacular bird life so hopefully we will spot some notables on the way. Later if time permits we will visit one of the local rose plantations. Finally we continue to Lasso for dinner and overnight at the historic Hosteria La Cienega. Day: 4 - Lasso (B,D) Today we hike in the Cotopaxi National Park under the shadow of Cotopaxi volcano. We plan two separate shorter hikes to make sure we see the best of the area. Day: 5 - Riobamba (B,L,D) First we visit the indigenous market at Saquisili, one of the most famous Indian markets of. We will enjoy a hosted lunch at Casa Del Perez. The owner is an artist and her place is a nice surprise for visitors. After lunch we continue to Riobamba where we should have time for an optional short walk. Day: 6 - Riobamba (B,D) After breakfast we drive to Estrella Del Chimborazo lodge for a gentle hike in the surrounding countryside. In the afternoon we stop at the Palacio Real community to learn something of the indigenous people of the area and, in particular, their relation with the lamas and alpacas. Footwear Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded rubber sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. If you are an experienced walker with strong ankles a good quality pair of trail or approach shoes may well be suitable for some walks. For purely sightseeing elements of the holiday, you should wear whatever is comfortable for a day out on your feet. We recommend that you either wear your walking boots or shoes or pack them and some waterproofs in your hand luggage as in the unlikely event that your hold luggage is delayed, you will still be able to participate in the holiday programme. Kit List Outdoor activities are always more enjoyable if you are prepared. The following list is a basic guideline that will enhance your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. A basic kit list is likely to include: - Waterproof jacket (Goretex or similar) and trousers - Lightweight, quick drying trousers - Several polo shirts, T-shirts or specialist walking shirts - Fleece jacket - Comfortable walking socks - Warm hat and gloves (if appropriate) - Sun hat, sunglasses, lip salve and high SPF sun block - Swimwear (if appropriate) - Day sack (25 litre capacity) to comfortably carry the kit you'll take out on your days activity - Strong polythene bags to keep the contents of your daypack dry - Water bottle(s) - at least 1 litre capacity - Basic first aid kit (plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic etc) - Insect repellent - Waterproof bag or container and knife for your lunch - Walking/trekking poles (if applicable) Trekking Poles Many of our clients find walking poles hugely beneficial when walking. They can both reduce stress on the knees and aid confidence. If you use them please make sure that you have the rubber tips covering the sharp metal points. There is increasing evidence that the bare metal tips are damaging footpaths both in the UK and abroad. Water-to-Go An alternative to bottled water from single-use sealed water bottles is filtered water from a refillable bottle containing its own water filter such as a Water-to-go bottle available from www.watertogo.eu. Just fill up from any water source and save the environment from disposable plastic bottles. We have negotiated an exclusive 15% discount with our partners Water-to-Go for you as a thank you for helping the environment. Please go to their website at www.watertogo.eu and enter the code RWH17 when ordering. In addition, Water-to-Go will match the discount with a donation to our charity, Heart & Sole, which will allow us to continue to make a difference in the countries you visit on our holidays. See our brochure or website for further advice regarding holiday insurance. Whoever you insure with, please ensure that you take full details, and ideally the policy itself, with you on holiday and provide our tour leader with your insurer's name, the policy number and emergency assistance contact numbers. Please note that it is very difficult to obtain travel insurance once your holiday arrangements have started. Personal Safety The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office provides up to date information on security and local laws for travellers, together with current passport and visa information, at www.gov.uk/travelaware. Please take a few minutes to look at the current advice on your planned destination. Please be aware of what's going on around you, take sensible precautions with your credit cards and passport and avoid displays of wealth such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches. Do not

carry more cash on you than you will need for each day, and we recommend that a money belt is used. Cultural Awareness Responsible Travel We're committed to ethical tourism in all our destinations. Our holidays are designed for you to discover the essence of the country you are visiting. Travelling in small groups not only gives you an up close and personal experience of your destination, but minimises your impact on the immediate environment. We feel that the most important starting point to protect the environment is to be out in it. For more details visit our website. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit.
