TREASURE OF PANAMÁ PORTOBELO Portobelo is a small historic town on the Atlantic coast of Panama. It has about 3,000 residents who have lived there for many, many years. Portobelo is one of the places in Panama with the greatest potential to attract tourists. One hour from Panama City you can literally dive into the past, while enjoying the warm clear tropical waters. It is located in the province of Colon, where the famous Colon Free Zone is located, as well as the ports of Manzanillo and Christopher. In 1502, during his fourth voyage, Christopher Columbus discovered a beautiful and safe bay on the Atlantic Ocean and exclaimed Porto Belo! (Beautiful port). Portobelo has a good number of colonial structures like the forts of San Lorenzo and San Jerónimo, Customs, a church, ruins of the castles of Santiago de la Gloria and San Felipe, plus several houses what used to be the colonial city. In 1980, these structures were declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Besides being a historical site Portobelo is also a National Park, making it a protected area and a rich site for ecotourism.
