The Mohican Gorge, which is located at the covered bridge, offers the best location to observe the result of this glacial activity. The Mohican Gorge has been designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service because of its unique natural beauty. Mohican State Park is also rich in culture and history, filled with Indian Lore, such as the lost Indian tribe of the Mohican, not to be confused with the Mohican Indian tribe of New York State. Pioneers settled within the boundaries of the park, including a famous wanderer named Johnny Appleseed, who hiked the Lyons Falls Trail and planted his trees. This trail was also heavily used as a stagecoach road and remains our most popular hiking trail today. Mohican Lodge opened April 27, 1974. Governor Gilligan proclaimed it Built by the citizens of Ohio for the use and enjoyment of all who come here.
