Dogwood Sam s Tales and Trails The Dogwood Gang May 2013 Chapter #142 President Lawrence Merino 850-623-5428 Vice President Armando Lozano 850-438-2437 Secretary/Newsletter Barbara Nuckols 850-994-6346 Treasurer Peggy Lee 850-476-4574 Wagon master Larry Blake 850-623-2668 Webmaster Larry Blake 850-623-2668 Tommy and Lois Crutchfield Tommy is from Cookville Tennessee, and Lois hails from Pensacola, Florida. They reside in Milton, Florida. The Crutchfields have been active in the Dogwood Sam s chapter, Tommy having held the office of President, while Lois helps plan monthly dinners for the chapter. They are now ASD s for the Southeast region. They are traveling in a class A motor home. Charles Dechant and Barbara Nuckols Charlie is from Dayton, Ohio and Barbara is from the state of Washington. Charlie came to Florida via the Military, as did Barbara. They reside in Pace, Florida. They joined the Dogwood chapter in May of 2010. Barbara has done the Dogwood Sam s newsletter for 2 1/2 years and is currently holding the office of secretary. The couple have five dogs that travel with them in their class A motor home.

May Chapter News The Dogwood Sam s traveled to the great state of Alabama, to Foley and Johnny s RV Resort. Sixteen rigs and three guests made the short trip over the state line. Johnny s RV park is always a fun place to go with so much to do in the cities of Foley, and Gulf Shores. Some of the chapter member early birds went to Lamberts for dinner Thursday night. This restaurant is famous for their throwed rolls. They all came back full to the brim. Lambert s offer an extensive menu, plus the throwed rolls, and pass arounds. It is a fun place to go and the food is great. Friday night welcomed chapter members with a buffet of finger food and fellowship. It s always good to see chapter members and catch up on all their news. Saturday morning breakfast was prepared by our excellent chiefs Charlie Dechant, Jim Robert, and Gene Parker. Thanks guys for a job well done! Saturday night dinner was an all time favorite pot luck. The chapter ladies really out do themselves, creating some of their favorite dishes. You can expect dishes from Southern favorites to some spicy Mexican treats, and everything in-between. Yum! Wagonmaster Larry Blake announced the plans for the chapters fist casual summer camping trip, June 14-15. We are going to a new park for the chapter, Rivers Edge. Rivers Edge is located close to home in Holt, Florida. Take I-10 to exit 45, south about 1 1/2 miles to the entrance of Rivers Edge. Prices are as follows, 30 amp $22.50, 50 amp $24.00 per night. Larry asks that you DO NOT make reservations, he still has some details to work out and will post an email at a later date.

May Chapter News I think all chapter members are looking forward to the summer camp outs. It will definitely be a new experience for us. No meetings, no scheduled dinner or breakfast, Just plain fun and relaxation! We have two new members that were voted into the Dogwood chapter Rex and Diana Hughes, and Bob and Connie Homan. Welcome to you both. Another couple making their second trip with the chapter are Carl and Jo Ann Woodall, hope to see them in the coming months. Lois Crutchfield showed members the new Southeast Region patch for the Good Sam s club. The patch was designed by Florida s state director, Joe Weston. The new patch will not be available until November of this year and are priced at four dollars. The old patch will still be acceptable even after the new patch is introduced. The weather which had been horrible, finally turned almost pleasant for the trip home. The chapter dealt with rain, rain, and more rain, when finally Saturday morning the sun came out. But boy was it cold, in May??? With record breaking temperatures throughout the Southeast, I think it was about forty five degrees in Foley and with the wind blowing, I don t think it got much warmer during the entire day. Burrrr. All in all the chapter had a great camp out, with the usual card games and some outdoor games that were brought inside for the members get out of the bad weather. Stories were told by Lorra Robert about their adventures at the Dothan Samboree had the members laughing. You can read her story in the Tales from the Dogwood Trails section of this newsletter. The weekend ended with Lois Crutchfield winning the 50/50 jackpot, lucky lady!

Great News! No sickness in the chapter this month!

Tales From the Dogwood Trails Submitted by Lorra Robert Dothan Samboree There were 160 rigs at the Samboree, 31 from Florida, with 5 from our chapter. Florida was awarded the state with the most rigs. It rained all day Friday and then turned cold on Saturday, but that didn t hamper us from having a good time and participating in the following events with these results: Golf Cart Rodeo... 1st place Jim and Lorra Robert Bean Bag Baseball..1st place Nell Lewis, 2nd place Sidney Lewis Photos.1st place Toni Merino, 2nd place Charles Leonard Painting.2nd place Charles Leonard Cake Walk, Irene Parker and Nell Lewis each won cakes Horse Shoes 2nd place Lorra Robert Special thanks to Roy and Carolyn Alsfeld. Gene Parker had knee replacement surgery in March, and was not going to attend the Samboree because of the amount of walking that would be required. The Alfeld s offered to let the Parker s borrow their golf cart for the Samboree. Jim and Lorra picked up the golf cart and brought it to the Samboree. Roy and Carolyn generosity was greatly appreciated, and traveling around the Samboree grounds was much easier Thank you Roy and Carolyn! Irene Parker laughed until she was speechless and I (Lorra) laughed until I cried. That s what happened when Irene and I tried our luck at the Golf Cart Rodeo. I m not sure what the spectators thought, but someone told Lawrence Merino that he didn't think it was safe for him to get in the arena to take pictures, (but he did anyway). You have to picture this, Lorra was driving blind folded, and Irene was giving directions around cones through a clover pattern with walls that were way to close to the cones. The directions of oh no...oh no translated to, "we're going to hit the wall, and we did. Head on, into the wall. We got to laughing so hard, I couldn t drive and Irene couldn t talk. Then we proceeded to knock down most of the cones, and even ran over some twice. We eventually finished the course in record time for endurance!

My Favorite Recipe 1 pound hamburger browned 8 0z. sour cream 8 oz. crushed Doritos 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 2 cups cheddar cheese 1 package taco seasoning 8 crescent rolls (Pillsbury in the can) Taco Dish Submitted by Lois Schlatter Brown hamburger, add taco seasoning as directed on package. Mix in sour cream. Spread crescent rolls in a 9x13 baking dish. Top with 1/2 the Doritos, add hamburger mixture, cheese and rest of Doritos. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.

My Two Cents Worth Barbara Nuckols As our Spring camping season comes to a close, the Dogwood Sam s chapter will embark on something new! Camping through the summer months was voted in at the April meeting. I think the chapter members are looking forward to the casual atmosphere that the wagonmaster Larry Blake has scheduled. There will be no meetings, which means no vests, or newsletter. The campouts will be a do your own thing, in other words grill some burgers with fellow campers, go out to your favorite place to eat or find a new place. Very casual with no set times for anything. I hope all chapter members enjoy this new schedule, it really goes with the lazy days of Summer. I must apologize for the lack of the April newsletter. We were out of town and not at the April campout. By the time we got home most of the chapter members I depend on for chapter news were having fun at Samborees. So I decided since the May campout was just around the corner, and it was so late in the month of April, I would just forego the April newsletter. Here s a quick update of news from April. The cooks for Saturday morning breakfast were Sidney Lewis, Roy Alsfeld, and Robert Malone, thanks guys! The Chinese Auction was again a big success bringing in $59 for the chapter, and Toni Merino won the 50/50 drawing. Zerelda Hammer sent an email to notify chapter members of a change in their email address, thervlife42@gmail.com, make a note of this for your records. Birthdays for last month were Diana Hughes, April 16, and Robert Lee, April 27. Happy belated birthday y all!
