Experience It! Arles Roman Amphitheater The well-preserved 1st century Roman amphitheater in Arles was home to gladiator battles and chariot races until the late 5th century. This resilient structure is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is among the most intact Roman amphitheaters in the world. The amphitheater is 450 feet long and is able to accommodate up to 20,000 spectators. At the foundation of this immense structure is a Roman cryptoporticus consisting of large underground passages. It has three impressive double corridors which are lined with rows of massive pillars and is secured with iron. Historians speculate that this area may have been a granary or used by merchants. The amphitheater went through a renovation in the 19th century which has allowed for hosting modern events including seasonal bullfights as well as plays and concerts in summer months.
