Overview The PSE pilot assembly may be retrofitted into Travis gas appliances using a SIT pilot assembly. This retrofit is made to improve grounding of the pilot to allow for better flame recognition. Contact Travis Industries for information on this prior to installation. Pilot Configuration PSE 2-Way Pilot Assembly Retrofit Instructions Because the SIT and PSE pilots are not identical in height, you may be required to add shims between the pilot bracket and pilot assembly to achieve the correct pilot height. Refer to the list below to determine which shims are required for your installation. Those appliances that use box style pilot brackets also require use of the included pilot gasket. Northfield, Eden, and Greenfield Stoves No shims or gaskets required. Berkshire and Tree of Life Stoves Use pilot gasket underneath the pilot assembly (discard old gasket). 21TRV and 864 ST Fireplaces No shims or gaskets required. DVS and 31 DVI Gas Inserts 864 TRV Use pilot gasket underneath the pilot assembly (discard old gasket). Install the 1/8 shim under the pilot assembly during installation as shown to the right. 564 SS and 564 DF Use both shims underneath the pilot assembly during installation as shown to the right. 1/8" Shim 1/8" Shim 1/16" Shim 564 HO Fireplace Use the 1/16 shim and both gaskets underneath the pilot assembly during installation as shown to the right. Modifying the Pilot Bracket for Proper Fitment The PSE pilot assembly has a screw on the baseplate that interferes with the pilot mounting bracket in certain circumstances. If your pilot bracket uses a press stud (or studs) you will need to file down the pilot bracket as shown below. Test-fit the pilot bracket prior to installation to verify fitment. NOTE: On models that use 1/8 shims, this step may be skipped. 1/8" to 3/16" If the pilot bracket uses press-studs this area in black needs to be removed (use a 1/4" round file). 1/8" to 3/16" If the pilot bracket uses press-studs this area in black needs to be removed (use a 1/4" round file). 564 Diamond-Fyre (DF) Media Tray Modification The elevated PSE pilot assembly creates interference with the 564 DF media tray pilot shield. Remove ¼ from both sides of the pilot shield as shown below. Place the media tray upside down on a suitable work surface. Pilot Shield Mark a ¼ line from the side of the pilot shield. Use shears or a hack saw to cut the pilot shield. The easiest way to remove the metal is to bend it with pliers until it breaks free. NOTE: Cut both sides off. 564 SS Pilot Shield Modification The elevated PSE pilot assembly creates interference between the 564 SS pilot shield and the log set. Remove ¼ from the top of the of the pilot shield as shown below. Remove the pilot shield (pilot shield comes loose once existing pilot assembly screws are removed). Pilot Shield Mark a ¼ line from the top of the pilot shield. Use shears to cut the top ¼ off of the pilot shield. Discard the upper portion of the pilot shield. Re-install the pilot shield with the new PSE pilot assembly. Installation NOTE: The pilot connections (pilot tube, spark and flame detection wires) on the two different pilot assemblies are not interchange-able. Replace the entire assembly including the pilot tube, spark wire, and flame detection wire. 1 Remove the existing pilot assembly and discard. On inserts, this will require removal of the burner tray. 2 Install the PSE pilot assembly. On box style pilot brackets, install the pilot gasket under the pilot assembly. On shelf style brackets, seal the area where the pilot connections penetrate the firebox with hightemperature silicone. If Your Appliance Uses 2 Screws for Pilot Assembly Attachment Certain pilot assemblies are held in place with 2 screws. These models often did not provide adequate grounding when the screws are reinstalled. Use the included 10-24 3/8 screws to attach the pilot assembly. If your appliance has a press stud (or studs), you may disregard this step. Use the 10-24 screws included with the new pilot assembly 5/16" Nutdriver 3 If using LP, install the LP orifice following the directions below. (a) Use a 7/16 open-end wrench to remove the pilot hood. (b) Remove and discard the Natural Gas (NG) orifice. Place the LP orifice in the pilot assembly then replace the pilot hood, tightening the pilot hood until it is snug (do not over-tighten). Use the included cable ties to prevent any wiring from contacting hot or moving components. Turn on gas to the appliance, start the burner, and leak-test the appliance.
