Sydney Pre-departure Kit 1

The Faculty of Law at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is looking forward to hosting you during your upcoming studies in Sydney. Following is important information as you prepare for your visit. Further information will be provided during orientation on the first day of class. Part 1: Travel Information Arrival in Australia - Visas.. 3 - Travel Dates. 3 - Quarantine Matters 3 - Transport from the Airport 3 Money Matters. 3 Transport.. 4 Telephones. 5 What to Pack. 5 Housing 6 Sightseeing 6 Part 2: About UTS - Directions and Maps 7-8 - Computer Access 9 - Library 9 - UTS Reading Materials 9 - Sport Facilities.. 9 - Lockers.. 9 Emergency Contact Numbers 10 2

Part 1: Travel Information Arrival in Australia Visas All US citizens must have a valid passport and an electronic travel authority (ETA) to enter Australia. You can obtain an ETA from https://www.eta.immi.gov.au or through a travel agent or airline. You should get a short stay visitor ETA, which will allow you to stay in the country for up to 3 months. Australia has no immunization requirements. If you plan to visit other countries before or after the program, you should check the requirements for those countries. Please ensure that you have medical insurance coverage. Travel Dates You cross the international dateline and arrive two days after your departure from the States. Classes start on Monday, 6 June. You must arrive in Sydney by 5 June, which is a departure from the US on Friday, 3 June. Quarantine Matters After clearing Immigration, you will claim your bags and proceed through Customs. Australia has strict quarantine laws and heavy fines apply for violations. Do not bring any fresh fruit or vegetables into the country. You can bring some packaged food into Australia but you must declare this on your arrival card. See http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/travel/entering-australia/cant-take. Transport from the Airport There is a train station at the international airport. The cost of the train is almost the same as a taxi. There are shuttle services to different parts of the city (see http://kst.com.au/airport.php). See the Transport section for more information about trains and buses in Sydney. Further information about the airport is available from www.sydneyairport.com. Money There are exchange bureaus at the airport and throughout downtown Sydney (known as the Central Business District or CBD ). Almost all ATMs in Sydney recognise foreign bank cards and will issue you cash in Australian dollars. There are exchange bureaus and ATMs within a block of the UTS Law campus. You do not need to bring travellers checks or Australian currency with you if you wish. Check with your bank to make sure that your ATM card will work overseas. The Australian dollar comes in notes of $50, $20, $10 and $5, with each note a different colour. There are $2 and $1 gold coins and silver 50 cent, 20 cent, 10 cent and 5 cent coins. There are no pennies. American dollars are never recognised as a form of currency. The Australian dollar is trading above parity with the American dollar, meaning that prices in Australian dollars are slightly more in US dollars. Sydney has a high cost of living. Food, transport and clothes are more expensive compared with prices in the US. You should budget at least $15 - $30 per day. Tipping is welcome but it is not an Australian custom and therefore not expected. 3

Transport Student Concessions ** You do not qualify for student concessions (discounts) on Sydney trains, buses and ferries. The New South Wales government does not grant travel concessions to international students and you are in Sydney on a tourist visa. Transit staff regularly patrol stations, buses and trains. You risk fines of several hundred dollars if you are found to be travelling on a student concession rate. Trains Central Station is less than a ten minute walk to UTS Law and is the closest train stop. Sydney has an extensive rail network. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly passes are available. Visit www.cityrail.info for fares and routes. Buses Numerous bus routes pass within one two blocks of the UTS Law campus. The closest bus stops are at Railway Square (next to Central Station) on Broadway St or at the corner of George St and Hay St. Bus passes (weekly, fortnightly and Travel Ten) can be bought from many newsagents, convenience stores and even train stations. Visit www.sydneybuses.nsw.gov.au for more information. To view bus routes that service UTS, visit http://www.sydneybuses.info/uploads/file/pdfs/university-maps/utsbusservices.pdf. Light Rail Sydney operates a light rail from Central Station to the Inner West suburbs. There is a light rail stop half a block from the Law Faculty. The light rail is a convenient form of travel if your accommodation is in an Inner West neighbourhood (eg Annandale, Glebe, Leichardt) or if you wish to travel to certain tourist sites such as the Fish Market. Ferries Catch a ferry from Circular Quay (the train station for the Opera House) to tourist destinations such as the beachside community of Manly and the Taronga Zoo. They Sydney harbour is stunning and a ferry ride is a less expensive alternative to harbour cruises. Monorail Constructed for the 2000 Olympics, the monorail is a tourist attraction serving some points of interest but should not be considered a form of transport. There is a monorail stop one block from the UTS Law Faculty. Taxis Taxis in Sydney are abundant but expensive. You are charged by time, not distance. There are extra charges for travelling from the airport or across the Harbour Bridge. All cabs accept credit card payments. Tipping is welcome but not expected. 4

Telephones Calling to Australia Landline: American international access code + Australia country code + city code + number. Example: 011 + 61 + 2 + 9514 3248 The city code for Sydney is 02 but the 0 is dropped when calling from overseas. All Australian land line phone numbers are 8 digits. All landlines in Sydney begin with 9. Mobile: American international access code + Australia country code + mobile. Example: 011 + 61 + 421 454 342 There is no city code for calling an Australian mobile. All Australian mobile numbers are 10 digits and begin with 04. The 0 is dropped when calling to a mobile from overseas. Calling the US from Australia Australian international access code + US country code + area code + number. 0011 + 1 + area code + phone number. You can purchase international calling cards from any convenience store. Rates to the US are usually 1 3 cents per minute. Phone stores at the airport and throughout the city offer pre-paid mobiles or SIM cards. There are telephone stores in the shopping centre across the street from UTS Law that can provide you with phones and SIM cards. **Dial 000 in case of an emergency. 000 is the Australian equivalent of 911 in the US.** What to Pack Clothing Pack a variety of clothes. Winter in Sydney is mild, with an average daytime temperature of 65 and evening of 50 F. However, it can reach into the 40s and winters in Sydney can be damp and penetrating. (Temperatures in Australia are displayed in Celsius). Pack warmer clothes if you are travelling to the Blue Mountains on the outskirts of Sydney or south to place like Melbourne. Pack summer/beachwear if you are travelling north to Queensland. The ocean is rather chilly in Sydney in June. Sydney has many outdoor activities, including kayaking on the harbour and bush walking in nearby forests. For classes you may wear what you would normally wear to class in the States. Smart casual is advisable for visit to the courts in the CBD. However, professional attire is not required, as Australians tend to be more casual in their attire. Adaptors and Plugs 5

Electricity is 240 250 volt, 50 cycle AC. Electrical plugs are three pronged and you will need adaptors for any electrical items you bring with you from the States. Adaptors are available in Sydney but you will save time and hassle if you bring them with you. Housing The University of Technology, Sydney has a list of nearby budget accommodations. See http://www.ssu.uts.edu.au/housing/hotels/budget.html. There is tourist information centre in Darling Harbour, a 15-minute walk from UTS Law, as well as in The Rocks, located across from the Opera House and Circular Quay Station. Day trips to destinations such as the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley wine region are accessible by train or rental car. The major airlines that fly throughout Australia include Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar. 6
