A Doctor s Confession to Geauga County And Why I Still Do What I Do... By Dr. Tad roediger let me start with our family photo... You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, I know you. You re Dr. roediger. I ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family. Well, perhaps I should tell you a little more about the photo. let s start with me, the guy at the top left of the photo. I know what it s like to live with constant pain. as a sophomore on the University of New hampshire football team, I developed sciatica; an excruciating condition that caused sharp pain in my leg and lower back. I was unable to play football anymore and the pain was so bad that at times it was difficult for me to even walk or concentrate. I was told surgery was the only option to alleviate the condition, but even after undergoing surgery, the pain persisted. On the advice of a friend, I decided to see a chiropractor. after the initial examination, the chiropractor was able to determine that I had several bones out of alignment in my spine, and that they were putting pressure on the nerves in my back. The situation was serious, but after a few treatments I noticed the pain had decreased and I felt better overall. Over time the chiropractic treatments allowed my body to heal itself naturally! MY CONFESSION IS I help people live their lives as they are intended to live. What I do is perform a gentle spinal treatment to alleviate nerve pressure without any twisting or popping, and the body responds by healing itself. It s as simple as that! I have helped thousands of people with a variety of health problems. It s strange how life is. Now people come to see me with their low back and sciatic problems. They also come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder /arm pain, numbness in limbs, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, sports injuries, just to name a few. My wife, Sharon, suffered for years with migraine headaches. She took ibuprofen everyday. We found her migraines were from misaligned vertebrae in her neck, we adjusted them, now she rarely has migraines. Courtney, our young adult, gets adjusted to be able to deal with the physical and mental stress of working in a fast paced restaurant in Chardon. Ty, our youngest, gets checked weekly to make sure his growing spine and body are working at its best. WhaT SETS ME apart... in the chiropractic field is my use of the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (AMCT); a treatment system that utilizes a small handheld instrument that applies a quick, lowforce, gentle chiropractic treatment directly to the source of your pain to alleviate nerve pressure to allow the body to heal itself. here s what some of my patients had to say: For some time, I ve had extreme pain in my right knee and shoulder and suffered from plantar faciitis. I ve tried every pain relieving lotion, cream and balm, but it wasn t enough. After beginning treatment with Dr. Roediger, I noticed small amounts of relief right away and steady improvement as I continue care. My family and friends have even noticed a change in me - Mark H - Thompson I had extreme pain in my lower back, I was told by doctors I was filled with arthritis. I found a treatment plan that worked from Dr. roediger. Now I am able to bend over and do more with my grandkids. I am finally able to get back to my daily routine. Bev C., Chardon STOp living WITh physical pain! Chiropractic treatment is very affordable and highly effective. Take advantage of a limited TIME OFFEr! Sugar Valley Maple sugar house on Chipmunk Lane, Middlefield (NOW Photo/James Miller) (below) Large evaporator used for boiling sap, and sawdust bricks used for fueling the evaporator. (NOW Photo/Nancy Huth) Here Comes the (Maple) Judge By Nancy Huth It s always a magical time of year when we see silver buckets hugging trees, tubing stretched between the maples, sugar houses nestled in the woods with smoke rising from their elongated chimneys. We head for those pancake breakfasts where the real syrup on the tables lets us pour as much as we want over our flapjacks. Here in Geauga County we don t order maple syrup on Amazon and have it delivered. No, we go straight to the source. Most of us living out here know there are different grades of syrup from Golden Delicate to Dark Robust and understand the importance of cold nights and sunny days for a good run. But when the annual Geauga County Maple Festival arrives in April, we leave it to the judges to choose the best syrups. One of those judges, James Miller of Chipmunk Lane in Middlefield, will be inducted into the Geauga County Maple Producers Hall of Fame at a special luncheon at Mary Yoder s on April 21. The Hall of Fame was established in 1984 in an effort to promote knowledge and interest in maple syrup and to honor those involved in its production. Jim Patterson of Patterson Fruit Farms was its founder. James Miller began making syrup 38 years ago at age 12 on his family s farm. Preferring tapping trees to milking cows, he pursued this hobby with the help of his wife Linda and son Toby. His latest state-of-the-art sugar house, built in 2014, contains a 3 by 12-foot evaporator, using Enviro Bricks made of sawdust for fuel. In his woods are 3,250 taps on over 82 acres, producing 1500 gallons of syrup. James is a four-time first place winner for his maple syrup at the Geauga Maple Festival, as well as often ranking first for his maple candy. Since becoming a judge in 2013, James no longer competes with his syrup. He is a graduate of the New England Maple Grading School, enabling him to judge maple syrup products across Ohio and Pennsylvania. You will also find him judging at the Geauga County Fair. He is a generous volunteer when needed. When asked what he especially enjoys about his syrup hobby, James said he loves being out in the woods and loves maple. He stresses the healthy benefits of maple syrup: all natural, no preservatives, fat and cholesterol free, low in sodium, rich in minerals and B vitamins. You can use maple syrup or maple sugar in any recipe asking for white sugar. James calls producing maple syrup his hobby since his main job is operating JMJ Enterprises, a fireplace retailer and installer on Nauvoo Road in Middlefield. James Miller s tree farm on Chipmunk Lane is called Sugar Valley Maple and is open to the public during March Maple Madness month. He can accommodate bus tours. So how was this year s maple run? James said it was a challenging year due to a warm spell in February and below normal temperatures in March. The production amount was like the year before, which wasn t a bumper crop. However, the quality was some of the best ever. The tapping season is over when the trees begin to bud. This year he began tapping the middle of January and finished pulling his taps the day after Easter. James mentioned that March was a month with two full moons and the one just before Easter, known as the Blue Moon, is also called the Sap Moon. Congratulations James Miller on your induction into the Maple Producers Hall of Fame! Apr May 2018 GeaugaNOW.com Page 3

Geauga-Trumbull Great American Cleanup The Great American Cleanup social theme #cleanyourblock is a call-to-action to engage more volunteers and participants in public space cleanup, beautification, and recycling events. Sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste has been involved in the campaign for 30 years. Once an individual becomes a Great American Cleanup volunteer with Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste, the goal is that they will be inspired to take that experience home to organize a similar, smaller-scale event in their own neighborhood, even on their own block. Community partners from Township officials to youth group leaders will execute litter cleanups starting Earth Day and continuing throughout May. Cleanup supplies can be received by registering on the Solid Waste District s website, www.startrecycling.com. This program is designed to tackle highly littered areas and foster behavior change to end littering and beautify communities. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in a local cleanup-and/or conduct their own. You can even celebrate your work later with a #cleanyourblock Party. Communities registered to date include Mosquito Lake State Park, April 14, City of Girard, April 21, Warren City/Warren Township Quinby Park, April 21, Auburn Township, April 21, Liberty Township, April 21 and 22, Punderson State Park, April 28, Cortland City Parks, May 5 and Greene Township, May 19.
