Issue 07 December 2014 Season s Greetings All our best wishes for the New Year State-of-the-art technology for Olympia Odos page 3 Asphalt works on Elefsina Korinthos page 2 Alma Zois: a different battle page 6 www.olympiaodos.gr

2 Welcome As the construction works are progressing, the final picture of the project is shaping. The drivers can now see a motorway that is double the size of the one we knew to date at most of the sections of Korinthos Patras Road. However, this is only one aspect of the project. The other aspect, the invisible one is that of an intelligent motorway which will be fitted out with state-of-the-art technologies and equipment complying with the European standards. The people responsible for the operation of the Motorway presented in detail the new systems that will equip the motorway and the benefits that the drivers will enjoy thanks to them, at the International Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems & Smart Cities held in Patras in November. Olympia Odos Construction news Asphalt works on Elefsina Korinthos Aiming at improving the driving experience The works to maintain and upgrade the motorway, in parallel with the construction of the new branch and the reconstruction of the existing branch of Korinthos-Patras section are ongoing. In the current period, asphalt works are performed to repair the pavement on Elefsina-Korinthos section and in particular from Isthmos to Ancient Korinthos Interchange. The works include the removal of the old asphalt layer and its replacement with a new anti-skid layer (long life) using modified asphalt with long durability and high quality special additives. The ultimate aim is to improve the safety and the driving experience of the motorway users. Everyone of course is firmly interested in the progress of the construction activity and in the upgrading of the existing sections, such as the implementation of asphalt works in the area of Tripoli Interchange and the refurbishment of the Kakia Skala and the Patras Bypass tunnels, for which you will read in this issue. Olympia Odos is not just a road. It is a route of culture, of important local economies, of unique products as well as a high-standard tourist destination. So, we are undertaking an effort to promote the entire area of Northern Peloponnesus together with important bodies in the field of culture, sports and environment. In the next issue of our newsletter we will present in detail our said synergies. Meanwhile, in the past period Olympia Odos was present at an important sport event, namely the Triathlon organized at Loutraki, as well as at the Marathon race organized by the Pan-Hellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer Alma Zois. People remain the major factor of this project. Thus, this time the column Our People presents a young woman, an Engineer working in the area of Xylokastro, and we try to see the Project through her eyes. We wish you Happy Holidays and safe trips! The Olympia Odos Team Patras Bypass tunnel equipment and system commissioning Within the framework of the refurbishment and modernization of the Patras Bypass Tunnels, many interventions on the E/M equipment have been implemented these last months so that the tunnels can comply with the modern safety requirements. The most important works concerned the following: Replacement and densification of the network of traffic supervision cameras and installation of an automatic video incident detection system Installation of new fans and maintenance of the existing ones Construction of new power substations to supply the tunnel ventilation system; Equipment / signage of the emergency exit of Girokomio Tunnel Installation of evacuation lights to lead the users in case of fire and replacement of the lights indicating the fire hose cabinets by new ones, clearer for the users The construction has been completed, but the incorporation of the new equipment and new functions in the tunnels automation and control systems requires extensive and exhaustive tests that are ongoing to date. For the needs of such tests, and in order to ensure the safety of both the employees and the drivers, it is necessary to close traffic lanes in the tunnels, while in some rare cases the full closure of the traffic in one direction may be required (e.g. for smoke detection tests in the tunnels). The relevant tests have reached their final phase and are expected to be completed by the beginning of the year. Updates Issue 07 December 2014 Olympia Odos at the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Smart Cities International Congress 50 Olympia Odos presented another aspect of the Project, i.e. the extensive use of state-of-the-art technology, at the International Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems & Smart Cities held in Patras and organized by the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Patras in cooperation with ITS Hellas and the assistance of the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers. The officials of Olympia Odos Operation projected the image of the project in the near future and presented the systems that will equip the AthensPatras Motorway upon its completion. Green light: free to pass Green arrow: lane open CCTV cameras for the open motorway 14 Variable Message signs 7 weather stations 43 traffic measurements stations with 324 induction loops Mr. Christos Karadimas, Manager of Olympia Odos Operation Olympia Odos, in addition to the particular strategic importance that has at a national and regional level regarding the development of Peloponnesus and Western Greece, is also a project using state-of-the-art technology and having a comprehensive ITS plan aiming at ensuring the drivers high standards of road safety addition to comfortable and quick trips. 873 SOS telephones 76 vari-focal cameras 300 fixed focal length cameras to automatically detect incidents Variable Message signs Tunnel lighting: the lighting systems allow the human eyes to quickly adjust to the reduced tunnel visibility 270 Ventilation systems: in case of fire, the ventilation system extracts the smoke from the tunnel or channels the smoke only to one direction Traffic supervision (CCTV) Yellow arrows: Caution! Stop immediately Wait for instructions Red X: Lane closed 257 SOS telephones State-of-the-art technology serving road safety In particular, the motorway will be equipped with Intelligent Transportation Systems along its entire length to allow for the daily traffic management and the prompt information diffusion from the road to the two Traffic Management Centers (TMC) and from the TMCs to the drivers and the Emergency Services. In addition, the 29 tunnels of the project (of a total length of 25 km, the longest of which is of 4 km) will have additional equipment to promptly detect and respond to incidents that may occur inside the tunnels and along their accesses, in accordance with the European standards. Open motorway equipment (indicatively): Dynamic signage: the dynamic signage includes variable speed limit signs, lane availability signs and in some cases variable message signs. It is used to guide the users and to impose the local restrictions due to incidents or works. Emergency exits are clearly marked using appropriate signs and lighting. In case of fire, leave your vehicle immediately and follow the emergency lighting which shows the route to the emergency exit. Emergency cabinets have been installed in the tunnel at regular intervals. These cabinets are marked with emergency lights and are equipped with: SOS telephones connected with the tunnel control room Fire extinguishers Emergency lay-bys or emergency lanes There may be emergency lay-bys at regular intervals or emergency lanes for broken down vehicles. These lay-bys are equipped with emergency cabinets. various traffic management electronic signs (variable speed limit signs, multi-task signs, lane availability signs etc.) 30 mobile barriers (bars) to close the traffic in case of incident 3

6 Lanes of human communication Olympia Odos Issue 07 December 2014 Olympia of Olympia Odos! 7 Loutraki Triathlon Olympia Odos supported the 2014 Loutraki ETU Triathlon European Cup & Mediterranean Championship held at Loutraki in mid-october. The people of Olympia Odos from Nea Peramos and Kiato undertook to demarcate the cycling route, using more than 500 traffic cones and bars and covering a total distance of 20.1 km. The race was particularly successful and was conducted safely, thus offering a high-level show to spectators, while the whole organization was highly appreciated by the international sport Media. We all wish to attract more sport events of such a high level which may promote Loutraki, the region of Korinthia and the Peloponnese in general at an international level as an ideal sports and tourism destination, since the region combines excellent weather conditions and infrastructures and knowhow of high level. Alma Zois The Pan-Hellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer Alma Zois organized the Greece Race for the Cure for the 6th consecutive year. It consisted of a 5 km race and a 2 km walk. Olympia Odos was present, for the first time this year, supporting the category I run for my mother, gathering all junior runners who were there to support their mothers. The feeling of victory was present all around the Zapeion Hall, even before the race began, since women of all ages were there after having won probably the most difficult fight in their life. This year however, a runner was missing. Vivi a new member of Olympia Odos, unfortunately lost her fight just two days before the Marathon race and this year s event was dedicated to her. The Greece Race for the Cure, however, is not only intended for remembering the women who left, but for the women survivors who thanks to their perseverance and self-confidence show us that everything is possible. Olympia Odos was there for all these women, our mothers, our friends, our sisters. Olympia of Olympia Odos! Olympia Diamandakou is a Mining Engineer, graduate of the National Technical University of Athens, who works on the section of Olympia Odos in the area of Korinthia. She was born and grew in Athens, at Lofos Axiomatikon. The last five years she lives and works in Xylokastro. Where else could we meet her but at the worksite! Why did you study Engineering? I wanted to become an Engineer and what is more I wanted to deal with constructions because I need to create. It is very engaging to have to solve a problem or satisfy a need that arises from the construction. What are your duties? I deal with the project s safety supervision, the planning and implementation of traffic arrangements on Kiato Derveni section, as well as with other tasks in the field of construction. Which is the most demanding one? The traffic arrangements in particular is a very difficult part of my job since we construct a road over an existing one. This makes the situation even more difficult for both the drivers, the users of the road, and the people working at the worksite. I could say that this is the major feature of this road as well as its high difficulty level. What does give you the most satisfaction? When, after many days of work, we complete a task, we deliver a section, we accomplish something very difficult and all colleagues we gather together and say this is over, now let s go forward. How is a normal day in the worksite? There are no normal days! There is work at the office, where we elaborate the report on the activities of the day, but our work is mainly performed outside, in the field. There, there is movement, there is creation. In our profession, there is no routine job. Is it easy for a woman engineer to cooperate and manage so many men and indeed from a so demanding position at the worksites, out on the field, as you the engineers say? It is not a matter of women or men; it s a matter of person. There are many men who could not do what I do and many other women who can do my job. What your colleagues would say if we asked them about you? She does not let us alone (laughter) Are you exacting? I would rather say insistent. In general, I am tenacious, I want to finish what has to be done. The most important, however, is that we are like a family with all people with whom we worked together at the worksite for days and nights. They support me and I do support them. This relation is the strongest motive to progress together both in case of difficulties and successes and to move forward. What does this road mean to you? How would you describe it? I can simply say, as I think we all have it in our minds: we construct a road complying with the European standards, a safe and high quality road that will link ports, cities, human communities, i.e. an important route of growth and communication. You came to Korinthia because of the project. Do you like this region? I moved from Athens to Xylokastro in 2009. This a very special place, with many off road routes and it captured my heart from the very beginning. I do not feel that I miss something from Athens, besides it s nearby. The countryside and the mountains of Korinthia are exceptional and ideal for short breaks. Ziria and Feneos, for example, have a specific natural beauty that you can admire and ramble across. When I manage to make some time, I like going around. What would you like to do in 10 years? I wish that what I will be content with what I will do in 10 years. I want to be creative and be pleased with what I do, whatever this would be. This means that I want to feel like I do today!
