A MARITIME MASTERPIECE Life aboard the world s new most luxurious cruise liner is decadence redefined By Mark Sissons SEVEN SEAS EXPLORER Boarding the new Seven Seas Explorer s glittering nine-deck high atrium, with its sweeping twin staircases, I feel like I ve embarked upon an unrivaled luxury cruise experience. In fact, I have. Welcome flute of champagne in hand, I set out to explore the newest vessel in Regent s fleet, set to sail from Barcelona to Monte Carlo with stops in Toulon, Sardinia and St. Tropez. Billed as an all-suite, allbalcony maritime masterpiece, Explorer carries only 750 guests and costs a whopping $450 million more per berth than any other ship afloat. I spend the next hour wandering from one end of this extravagantly designed ship to the other. First, the ornate, two-tiered, 694-seat Constellation Theater that will host four brand new shows during our voyage, each developed by a theatrical dream team with extensive Broadway experience. Then the large teak pool deck lined with comfortable, white lounge chairs. And finally, the state-of-the-art Canyon Ranch SpaClub offering ultra-luxurious treatments developed in partnership with lifestyle and beauty experts, Red Flower. Explorer is a floating palace, with dozens of exquisitely designed crystal chandeliers found throughout its numerous restaurants, lounges and other public spaces. Acres of hand-cut Italian Carrera marble can be found throughout the ship. And millions of dollars of art, hand picked by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings president and chief executive officer, Frank Del Rio, hang on in its public spaces. Among them are masterworks by the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. In my spacious 332 square foot cabin, I discover a marble and tile accented oversized bathroom stocked with luxurious amenities, a large mahogany lined walk in closet, and a European king-sized bed facing a couch, mini-bar and interactive flat screen TV. The huge verandah is large enough for two chaise deck chairs and a table. My generous abode may be the cruise industry s most spacious suite in its class, but it s nothing compared to Explorer s much heralded 4,443 square-foot Regent Suite. This two-bedroom highlight of the most luxurious ship ever built is all marble, exotic woods and hand-crafted furnishings. Its sprawling living room features a custom Grand Maroque piano designed by Dakota Jackson. And its master bedroom s $150,000 Savoir No. 1 bed affords a spectacular view through floor-to-ceiling windows to the outdoor, glassenclosed sitting area. Especially impressive is the Regent Suite s gold leaf in-room spa, a first at sea that comes with unlimited complimentary spa treatments from Canyon Ranch. At $10,000 a night, this opulent shipboard accommodation is indeed worthy of a king s ransom. Initial inspection complete, I change into evening attire to dine at Explorer s main restaurant, the Europeaninspired Compass Rose. Surrounded by a pastiche of
rich woods contrasted by light marble stones, I tuck into an eclectic array of European-inspired Continental cuisine served on Versace plates beneath cascading aqua-blue chandeliers. In the centre of the room hangs an enormous hand-blown Murano glass ceiling fixture. Joining me is Cruise Director Ray Solaire, who regales our table with tales from his 40-year career as a singer, puppeteer, comedian and ventriloquist aboard several of the world s most famous cruise liners. Compass Rose is one of several fine dining experiences aboard Explorer. The ship s three specialty restaurants also offer sumptuous fare that reflect the culture and cuisine of Explorer s many diverse destinations. Pacific Rim features a panoply of Pan-Asian dishes like miso-spiced black cod wrapped in hoba leaf. Chartreuse offers a multiple course celebration of French gastronomy that includes favourites like handcut Charolais steak tartare. And Prime 7 is a glamorous yet intimate steakhouse where I consume a massive 32-ounce bone-in ribeye steak cooked to perfection. Alongside these gourmet jewels is a new participatory concept called the Culinary Arts Kitchen, a cooking school where guests can expand their culinary skills during daily hands-on courses. Haute cuisine aside, a cruise ship is only as impressive as its signature ports of call. Our first stop, the French port of Toulon, offers Explorer s passengers access to a fascinating menu of shore excursions. I choose a guided walking tour of Aix en Provence, perhaps France s most picturesque town. Strolling its celebrated Cours Mirabeau, lined with an intertwining arbor of green plane trees, I eventually reach the Cathedral Saint Sauveur, with its remarkable carved pillars and slender colonnades. The next afternoon, while exploring northern Sardinia s sun drenched Costa Smeralda, I soak up the luxe atmosphere in glamourous Porto Cervo, one of the Mediterranean s most storied resorts. Lined with high end designer boutiques, pampering spas, fine restaurants and exclusive nightspots, this hideaway is popular with Euro jet setters. As is classically chic St. Tropez, our next stop, its famous half-moon shaped harbour full of gleaming white super yachts. While anchored there on our final evening aboard Explorer, staff throw a lavish pool deck bon voyage barbeque as the bronze Mediterranean sun sets over the Côte d Azur s most iconic party town. Journey s end comes when I awaken in Monte Carlo, the final stop on Explorer s first ever passenger-laden voyage. The view over breakfast on the promenade deck of this fairytale enclave s palatial waterfront is breathtaking. It s fitting that my brief time aboard the world s most luxurious ocean liner should end in what is arguably the world s most glamorous harbour. When my waiter asks if I would like more caviar with my breakfast champagne, I just have to say mais oui.
