1854 FRENCH PATTERN HAIR ON COW HIDE IDENTIFIED TO Ezra Brooks 8 th USCT This knapsack is in the collection of the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER WITH SPECIAL THANKS TO Dr. Gordon Jones This knapsack of brown & white hair on cowhide with buff straps, one of 10,000 purchased from France in 1861 to equip several Mass. & Pennsylvania regiments. They were returned via the Ordnance Dept.& some were re-issued. Enlistment records show Ezra Brooks was drafted into Company H of the 8 th United States Colored Troops on Oct. 6 th 1863 & was mustered out on Nov. 10 th 1865. Carpenter from Norwich, Conn. And used by him at every place where knapsacks were used in his entire service of nearly three years.
