The parachicos get close to the saints to touch them and thank them for all that they have recieved. The number of parachicos is so great (half the town goes out to dance), that they need a guide, that is why there is a parachicos patron, position that goes from generation to generation.» Culture without discrimination.» Culture with values.» Culture for new audiences.» Culture for culture s sustainability. The Carnival s crowning nights and colorful parades with its traditional troupes are famous. During those dates, the city is dressed in lights in Las Vegas style, to house international artists and popular dancing parties that last through day and night. The celebrations start with a funerary parade and the burial of bad humor, represented by a cloth figure dressed as a pirate. It is later taken through the city streets and rested inside a coffin to be burnt. This rite is followed by the Flowers Festival with a parade of allegoric floats dressed with paper flowers. On Mojadera Mondays the children from Campeche throw balloons filled with water among themselves and on Pintadera Tuesdays the neighbors gather and they paint each other. RECOMMENDATIONS CANDLEMAS FEAST Tlacotalpan, Veracruz January 31st February 02nd Every year, in the beautiful harbor of Tlacotalpan, the Virgin of Candlemas is celebrated in the month of February. This image, that arrived with the first friars of Saint John of God Order from Spain is revered and celebrated on February 2nd. The image was introduced with the intention of converting the ancient inhabitants of the region to Christianity, substituting the pre Columbian fertility goddess that coincidentally was revered during the same dates and to whom offerings were made to get benefits from the land such as: good harvests, abundance of fish and good weather conditions in general. The inhabitants were used to the storms that devastated the zone, once the island of Tlacotalpan, due to the strong northern winds, called 'nortes' by the inhabitants of Veracruz. RECOMMENDATIONS MARCH FESTIVITIES FOR OUR LORD SAINT JOSEPH SPRING EQUINOX in Teotihuacan, Bernal and Chichen Itza -Teotihuacan, State of Mexico March 21st The Equinox in Mexico is an important astronomic event of pre-columbian tradition; the Archaeological Zone of Teotihuacan is an excellent place to witness it. Each year thousands of visitors get here to recharge their energy, dressed in white; besides many groups of dancers may be seen, as well as traditional rituals. -Bernal, Querétaro March 21st This event takes place at "La Peña de Bernal", a huge monolith, which in ancient times used to be a volcano. This place was important during pre- Columbian times; that is why, every year on this date its inhabitants climb the Peña to be charged of energy, by performing several rituals to recieve the rays of the sun. Besides, different traditional dances may be seen, as well as the possibility to enjoy an environment of peace and harmony. -Chichen itza, Yucatan March 21st Chichen Itza is the most famous mayan city; its most important event is the arrival of spring, because on this day, besides of "charging energy" the visitor may witness a beautiful show: once the rays of the sun touch the end of the pyramid stairs, the image of "Kukulkan", the serpent is projected descending, until it connects with the lowest part of the building; it is an unique moment in the year, where the visitor may enjoy the beautiful mayan buildings. 10 11

LIVE IT TO BELIEVE IT I. SACRED PLACES AND CITIES. IN SEARCH OF THE UNEXPLAINABLE: MESOAMERICAN ESOTERIC ROUTE With the word Esoterism we are referring to those ideas and practices about the supernatural, metaphysical energies, the sacred, the relation of men with nature, as well as ways to get mental, emotional and physical health through rituals that included mystical practices when entering in touch with beings unperceptible by the senses; this means that, within the term esoteric we may include all those things that men are incapable to explain or conceive as a result of their own actions, but as the intervention of occult forces and/or invisible beings. It is worth mentioning that the cultures included in the Mesoamerican Esoteric Route, formed part of the six mother cultures in the world, which developed in the following zones: Mesopotamia, Egipt, India, China, Mexico and the Andes Region. In Mesoamerica the measuring of time was common usage since very early stages and it was considered as something sacred, because it was thought that the calendar was a gift from the gods, also, the stars movement not only was used to make a calendar, but also to figure out a urban landcape by being the base to trace and orient the buildings and important sites such as: Teotihuacan. Main Temple, Tenochtitlan, Mexico City. Cholula s Pyramid, Puebla. Tajin, Veracruz. Uxmal, Yucatan. Chichen Itza, Yucatan. Tulum, Quintana Roo. Tepozteco Hill, Cuernavaca, Morelos. Volver al índice LIVE IT TO BELIEVE IT II. THE CHAMANS OR TRADITIONAL MEDICINE MEN: SACRED PEOPLE AND TIES WITH THE SUPERNATURAL. The word Chaman has its origin in the region between Siberia (Russia) and Manchuria (China). This word was spreaded throughout the whole world thanks to the Russian language. The original word is saman or xaman and comes from the verb scha which means knowledge. In general, the term has to do with the people that have contact with the spirits. In other words, the term chamán doesn t have its origins in America, but it was introduced by anthropologists, because they found similarities among the people in this territories that cured by using techniques such as entering in a trance and speaking with beings unseen by the common mortals. Antropologically, the word chaman is a concept that defines people that are present in the cultures from Siberia, Africa and America. Regularly they are located among hunters-collectors societies, although in recent dates the concept has also being used to analyze more complex societies such as the Mayan. KINDS OF CHAMANS. Among the Nahua or groups from the central region of Mexico there were good and bad chamans. The protector of the bad chamans was Nahualpilli which was an advocación of the god Tezcatlipoca who was the Lord of death and obscurity. Among the bad chamans there were the Tecotzquani or calf eaters, the Tlatecólotl 14 or owl men, this animal was considered a forseer of death among the nahua and the Teyolloquane or heart eaters. On the other hand, the good chamans may be divided in guardians of places and objects and medicine men. 15
