COMMUNICATING Crss-Cultural Cultural Adaptatin and Immersin Crss-Cultural Adaptatin is the name given t the prcess f vercming disrientatin, lneliness, insecurity and/r cnfusin that ften ccurs when a persn leaves a familiar place, and mves fr a perid int a culture markedly different frm his r her wn. During this prcess yu are inclined t find things wrng in yur envirnment the peple in Austria (r elsewhere in Eurpe), yur hst family, the fd, yur classes, the bus system anything withut realizing that it is yur temprary inability t cpe with differences that is making yu feel bad. Yu may cnsider yurself a very flexible persn. Hwever, d nt underestimate the challenge f adjusting t a new grup f classmates, a new cuntry, a hst family, different teaching methds, public transprtatin, new fds, and an infinite variety f ther things. Yur desire t make this "the best experience f yur life" may actually cause additinal stress in unexpected situatins. Peple are pen systems, shaped by their accustmed envirnment frm which their cultural identity derives. Peple have the desire t maintain equilibrium with their envirnment. When we enter new cultural situatins, we are likely t encunter cmmunicatin prblems which disrupt ur equilibrium. This may cause intense discmfrt. Thrugh the prcess f crss-cultural adaptatin, the equilibrium is eventually re-established. Imprtant skills in this adaptatin prcess are the abilities t listen and t learn t phrase questins clearly t respnd willingly and clearly t understand nn-verbal messages t be pen minded and patient Lk fr help if needed It is nt always pssible t slve prblems, especially prblems deriving frm cultural differences, n yur wn.
