(As of 10 October 2017) 6-10 Students + 2 Faculty Your guide/facilitator will meet you at Cape Town International Airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Cape Town. On route your guide will introduce you to the city and brief you as to the program for the next few days. Flight TBA Overnight at (Shared backpacker accommodation). 4 nights Dinner (TBA) at a restaurant within walking distance to your accommodation. Morning visit to Langa Township. Informal settlements, known as townships, are a result of the history of apartheid and the reality of current high unemployment levels and poverty in South Africa. None the less, these magical spaces pay tribute to the spirit of human triumph and allow the visitor an insight into South African culture that is hard to find anywhere else. You will learn what Ubuntu means as you touch and live the authentic South African experience. The tour includes a historical account of townships and allows the visitor an opportunity to visit various projects and community initiatives designed for the upliftment of the community. We also have some fun by visiting a local school, partaking in a drumming session and tasting some home brewed African beer! This afternoon you will catch the ferry to Robben Island. Situated just a few kilometres offshore from Cape Town, this barren windswept island was home to Nelson Mandela for almost 20 years. The intention to silence anti-apartheid leaders by imprisoning them on Robben Island had the opposite effect and the island became a focal point for international resistance to the apartheid regime. Today it has become a symbol of freedom, the transformative power of forgiveness and a place of political pilgrimage. The entire six square kilometer island is now a UN World Heritage Site.

Dinner (TBA) at a restaurant within walking distance to your accommodation. Today we start with an early exhilarating hike up Table Mountain! After watching the sunrise from Platteklip Gorge, you will be presented with a spectacular aerial perspective of the city. We will then descend via cable car. (Weather permitting). This afternoon we explore Cape Town City, voted as one of the most beautiful cities in the WORLD! We visit the new and old city as we experience the various different cultures and architectural designs associated with this historical city. In the city we will uncover the history of European settlement in South Africa - founded in 1652, this city has an interesting history which includes indigenous, Dutch and British settlement. Situated at the steep slopes of Table Mountain, Devil s Peak, Lion's Head and Signal Hill, Cape Town City is sure to excite your senses. Dinner (TBA) at a restaurant within walking distance to your accommodation. Today is an additional day to explore more of Cape Town City including the Castle of Good Hope, The Maritime Museum at the V&A Waterfront, The Chavonnes Battery at the Waterfront, South African Museum, Slave Lodge Museum and The District Six Museum. Dinner (TBA) at a restaurant within walking distance to your accommodation. Today we experience some of the most spectacular views in the world. We make our way through the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town and on to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where we spend the bulk of the day. We will visit Cape Point, a world renowned landmark, where we learn about the Portuguese discoverers who bravely explored the West Coast of Africa in the 15 th C. We take in the natural beauty with a nature walk to the wreck of the SS Thomas T. Tucker where you will undertake a field study of the shipwreck. Dinner, self-catering, we will buy food along the way to cook. Overnight at Cape Point 2 nights.

We will base ourselves in Simons Town for the next two nights. On the first day we explore Simons Town and its museums. Overnight at (Shared backpacker accommodation). 2 nights Dinner at a nearby restaurant in Simons Town On the second day we head down to Kalk Bay to conduct research on the fishing industry. We conduct research and visit the nearby penguin colony. We will also visit the Hout Bay Market. Dinner at a nearby restaurant in Simons Town No guide or vehicle, your lecturer will present you with a research question and you will have access to Cape Town Library so that you can work on your research project. Overnight at (Shared backpacker accommodation). 3 nights All meals included. Dinners (TBA) at a restaurant within walking distance to your accommodation. Today we visit Vergelegen Wine Estate for a wine tasting and a visit to their historical library. Thereafter we continue on route out of Cape Town and towards Mossel Bay. Afternoon travelling time, light lunch on route 2 nights in Mossel Bay (Shared backpacker accommodation). Dinner at a nearby restaurant. A casual walk to the lightghouse and cave in Mossel Bay or an OPTONAL Shark Cage Dive:

OPTIONAL Shark Cage Dive: 20 minute boat ride into the Bay, Arriving at anchor site, you will receive a briefing concerning the do s and dont s of cage diving. The crew will immediately start to chum the water to attract the sharks which consists of natural marine products and fish which is natural to their diet. The chum creates a slick which drifts with the current and this shiny, oily trail is easy to spot from the boat. Once the sharks are around the boat and comfortable with the boat the cage will be dropped into the water and attached to the side of the boat. Dinner at a nearby restaurant. 4x4 Game Drive in the morning. OPTIONAL Walk with Lions in the afternoon. If you want to do both activities you will have to pay for the second activity. Dinner on route to Cape Town. Overnight close to Cape Town International Airport. Make your own way across to the airport for departures. Departure on TBA.
