GENERAL INFORMATION Landscape Two types of relief are typical for the municipality of Sliven: hilly and mountainous to the north, and plain to the south. The city's elevation varies between 180 and 300 m (590 and 984 ft) above sea level. Climate The municipality of Sliven falls into the sub-balkan fields of the transitional continental climatic area. The winters are mild, the summers are relatively hot. Autumns are longer than springs. The local Bora wind is typical of Sliven. The river water is used mainly for irrigation. The Zhrebchevo dam on the Tundzha, 25 km/15.5 miles away from Sliven, has a capacity of 400 million cubic meters. Many pumping stations and water catchments have been built, providing a peak flow between 50 and 100 l/sec. The Asenovets dam with a capacity of 28,2 million cubic meters is the main water source of the city. The municipality of Sliven is also rich with spas. Their water has proven its effectiveness in the treatment of ventricular, liver, locomotory and peripheral nervous system diseases. Sliven is one of the most important Bulgarian industrial centres, with traditions in the production of textile, machine building, glass, electrical production, food, wine and spirits.
