About Burnie Burnie is Tasmania s most westerly city, located on the North West Coast about 40 minutes from Devonport. It has a northerly aspect and is nestled around Emu Bay on Bass Strait. Burnie has about 20,000 residents, a cool temperate climate with impressive gardens and parks. The city is surrounded by beautiful beaches, sparkling water and fresh air. Together with a dynamic cultural life, galleries, performances, exhibitions and community events. Burnie also hosts a busy container port, a rail hub and factory framework lining the highway around Emu Bay. Getting to Burnie For students travelling from interstate, access to Tasmania is by air and sea only Getting to Burnie Travelling by Air Direct flights are available from Melbourne to Wynyard (Burnie) airport via Rex airlines (Regional Express http://www.rex.com.au). This is the closest airport and is only 15-20 km from the University s Burnie Accommodation. Direct flights are also available from Melbourne to Devonport through Qantas airlines (www.qantas.com). Devonport airport is 58 km from Burnie. Regular flights also depart from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and fly direct to Launceston. These flights are often cheaper but the Launceston Airport is 155 km away and there is no easy or regular transit to Burnie so this option is not recommended. Travelling by Sea Alternatively, you can travel to Tasmania from Melbourne by sea on the Spirit of Tasmania. The Spirit departs from Melbourne and arrives in Devonport, this has the added benefit of letting you bring your own car. www.spiritoftasmania.com.au Estimated Cost of Transit from Burnie Airport Taxi $40.00 Bus Hire Car Spirit of Tasmania $6.60 Bus (Concession) PLUS $10.00 Taxi or $2.30 Bus $100 per day Current as from 19/09/2017 The Spirit offers 1-2 sailings between Melbourne and Devonport each day. Frequency and fares vary according to the season and whether you are taking a vehicle on board, the length of the vehicle and the accommodation you select (private cabin, shared cabin or recliner). 3
If you do not have your own vehicle during your placement then you will need to travel by bus, bicycle, taxi or walk Travelling by Bus Metro Tasmania operates bus services in Burnie (as well as Launceston in the State s North and Hobart in the State s South). Metro is the largest passenger transport company in Tasmania. The App provides a trip planner so that you can find your next bus, plan your travel and set your favourites Fares Metro fares are published on-line at http://www.metrotas.com.au/fares/ Fares can be paid by cash or with a Metro Greencard a smartcard that is loaded with bus fare credit. On boarding a bus, the cost of the trip is deducted from the balance on the Greencard. The Greencard can be topped up with new credit and used over and over again. Greencard credit can be purchased in one of four ways: At a Greencard agent including Metro depots and the Metro Shop (using cash, credit card or EFTPOS) On a bus (giving cash to the driver) Online (using a credit card) for registered Greencard holders Via the Metro Tas App Fares paid using a Greencard are discounted by 20% and a daily cap is applied (the maximum amount your travel will cost each day). Student Concessions Full-time students attending University are eligible for Student Concession fares until the end of the year in which they turn 18 or Adult Concession fares from the start of the year in which they turn 19. Students must carry appropriate student identification to validate their entitlement to Concession fares. Getting Around 4
The route 85 Hospital Link service is a limited-stops service that connects the North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital (Burnie to Latrobe via Ulverstone and Devonport) 365 days a year. The trip time is approx. 70 minutes, with four return services Monday to Friday and two return services Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. The regular adult fare is $9.20 between Burnieand Latrobe ($1.60 Student Concession). If you want to do some sightseeing there are several transport options that will allow you to get out and about Out & About Redline Coaches The Saturday Markets at Hobart s historic Salamanca Place "Tasmania s own" Redline, Tasmania s largest private coach company, operates regular routes between Tasmania s four cities - Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie with connections to Smithton. This service can be used to access iconic bushwalks such as The Overland Track, Three Capes Track and Frenchmans Cap. You can visit historic villages and towns, local attractions and amazing scenery. The University s Centre for Rural Health (CRH) offers free accommodation for health students going on a rural placement in Tasmania The accommodation is generally located close to health facilities and services, and is offered on a share basis. How to book accommodation You can book your accommodation via the University s Professional Experience Placement website: It is fully furnished and consists of individual bedrooms with shared kitchen, bathroom, living room and laundry facilities. Wireless internet services are also available at some sites. Rooms are limited, so book early. No Charge $ while on placement Bookings essential The house is fully furnished and consists of 4 bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, 2 bathrooms, shared open plan kitchen, dining and lounge room. It features an extensive, secure outdoor area. The house has reverse cycle heat pump and ocean views. 9

The house is fully furnished with 4 bedrooms, built in wardrobes, ensuite to the main bedroom as well as a main bathroom with separate shower. It features a large lounge room with electric heating and access to a private timber deck as well as a separate diningarea and large open plankitchen. 10
Financial Assistance The Centre for Rural Health provides health students with funds, known as a Rural Placement Allowance, to reduce out-of-pocket expenses when you undertake placements outside of Hobart and Launceston. If you receive an allowance you will be asked to complete a brief survey at the end of your placement. To apply for assistance or to seek further information please contact K.Peek@utas.edu.au Rates For University of Tasmania students: $60 per week of placement for students who are not provided with free accommodation $30 per week of placement for students who are provided with free accommodation For Interstate Students: A single payment of $200 per placement Financial Assistance Students studying at Interstate universities need to complete an application form that is available at: www.utas.edu.au/rural-health/quick-links/studentresources/rural-placement-allowance Scholarships There may also be scholarships available to help you meet the costs of your rural placement. Information is provided on the National Rural Health Student Network website at www.nrhsn.org.au Note: The Rural Placement Allowance is not available to students receiving financial assistance for placements from their school, university or through a scholarship. 11
On your placement Once you commence your placement you can access learning and study support (known as learning and teaching) and information for social networking from your local Whole of Community Facilitator. Information on the local Whole of Community Facilitators are available from the following PEP website: http://www.utas.edu.au/health/professional-experienceplacement/rural-and-regional-placement/community-facilitators Learning and Study Support All students can access the Rural Clinical School Facilities based at the Northwest Regional Hospital Campus in Burnie. These facilities offer communal study spaces with computers, Wi-Fi and a lunch room. This is a great space for all students to study and catch up/ network with each other. Professional learning opportunities are available from time to time. All students will be provided with upcoming events through their local Whole of Community Facilitator or Lead Facilitator/s.
