The History Lake Kora was built in 1898 as Kamp Kill Kare, a magnificent log-and-stone compound on a vast forest preserve, with its own 500-acre lake. It was an exclusive retreat, but soon the site of many grand affairs. Yale and Harvard teams practiced on the softball diamond and the eminent families of the Gilded Age came to dance on the Boathouse docks. No expense was spared on luxury and mountain charm: birch bark writing paper, a Venetian gondola, a floating lantern-lit bridge, and even a dancing black bear. Still in private hands today, the camp has remained astonishingly intact for more than a century.
