Member at Large KL7IG Charley Gray IN BRIEF: I am sad to report that we lost two persons from our radio club family during December. The wife of long-time member, Charlie Gray, passed away on December 15 th. Ethel Gray was born in Juneau in 1922. Ethel lived in Juneau much of her life and was active in the community. Bob Simpson, NL7XZ, passed away on January 2, 2012. Bob was a strong, active and faithful member of our Club, and he will be greatly missed by members of the amateur radio community and his professional associates. He held many posts in the Club, and was largely responsible for helping to keep the Club going during down years. We will all miss Bob s smile and his interest in amateur radio. He was truly one of the good guys. Keep Marion and his family in your thoughts and prayers. 2011 ANNUAL MEETING: The annual meeting of the JARC will be concluded on Saturday, December 7 th. The Annual meeting began on December 7 th and was continued until the time of our annual banquet, which will take place on Saturday January 14 th. Banquet events include the banquet, election of officers, door prizes a VE session and a flea market. Nominations for Club officers will be open on the floor. There are many opportunities for you to become active in our Club including as a Club officer. This last year has been great, and we want to continue the trend! Come join us and get to know the Club members. Remember, in order to qualify for door prizes you must be a current member. MEMBERSHIP: Dave Bruce announced that our current membership has reached 75, which is our best result in many years. This is due to the hard work done by Dave, Pat and Bob Simpson in continuing to promote our Club. See the attached letter from Pat concerning planned activities for 2012.
SWEEPSTAKES CONTEST: The final results have been tabulated. We had a total of 60,000 points from 454 contacts on 10, 15, 20 and 40 meter bands. See the attached writeup. EOC EMERGENCY DRILL: The Club will participate in the emergency drill during February. This is an important event and we will need participation from many Club members. More information to come. SUMMARY OF UPCOMING EVENTS: Lunch every Wednesday at Safeway WL7NWS station at Forecast Office open to members 24/7 365; arrange to be checked out on operation by KL7HFI or AL7L JARC Banquet and Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, January 14 th beginning at 6:30 at St Brendan s Church. Other events include a VE session at 3:00pm and a flea market beginning at 5:00pm. Door prizes will be announced following the banquet and short business meeting. You must be present to win any of the door prizes except the grand prize. The Grand Prize is a $200 gift certificate to Amateur Electronic Supply. The Club will provide the main course (prime rib) and refreshments. Although not required, we request that members provide a side dish such as a salad, vegetable, dessert, rolls, etc. Members are encouraged to bring family members and guests. WEDNESDAY LUNCH MEETINGS: We have had 8 to 10 members at our Wednesday lunch meetings. The informal lunch meetings continue to take place at the Safeway Deli at noon every Wednesday. There is a great selection of sandwiches and soups. Come join us! ARES ACTIVITIES: The ARES net meets on the Mt Roberts repeater each Tuesday at 7PM. Now that all of the Club repeaters are linked, you can join the Net on any of our repeaters. It only takes about 10 minutes and provides good practice for any events that could overwhelm our community. The Northern Southeast Alaska Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) net operates with participation from Haines, Gustavus, and Juneau. The purposes of this net are to check on the readiness of ARES members and their equipment, to make announcements pertaining to amateur radio, to conduct informal training and to give members experience in managing a net. All are welcome to check in. We hope to see you on the radio! Jerry will adjust the over-modulation of the Mt Roberts 220 link and will replace the triband antenna.

The repeater and link are both working with some over-modulation problems. Lena Point R147.00/T146.40 Repeater is operating well since the new controller was installed. New antennas need to be installed. Mendenhall Valley Repeater (formerly Heinzelman Ridge ) R146.64/T146.04 System is located at Jerry s home in the Valley. It needs some adjustment. Hoonah Mountain R146.70/T146.10 Repeater is now functioning, although the signal is a little weak. December 7, 2011 JUNEAU AMATEUR RADIO CLUB MEETING MINUTES Meeting called to order by the Vice-President at 1935 hrs. Treasurer Report: Rich reported that the balance in the bank is $1879.67. Rich reviewed the bills paid during the month. VE Report: There is a VE examination scheduled to take place just prior to the banquet at 3:00 pm on January 14 th. VHF Report: Mt Roberts repeater is working well, but the link is over-modulating and requires adjustment. The triband antenna needs to be replaced. Will be difficult to service because of snow depth. The new linking antennas that Jerry purchased (a pair of 220 MHz linking antennas), need to be installed at Lena. One will be pointed North and the other towards Mt Roberts. Membership: Dave reported that we currently have 75 paid up members. We need to have membership forms filled out by all members. Dave sent out a membership letter, including a membership form, to all SE Alaska hams. Old Business: The following expenditures were estimated for the annual banquet o $300 for food o $135 for rent of the hall and cooking facilities o $200 for gift certificate o $250 for ham books o It was moved seconded and passed that we not exceed an expenditure of $1000 for the banquet.
The banquet will be held on Saturday, January 14 th at 6:30pm. A VE session will be held at 3:00pm and a flea market will take place beginning at 5:00pm. The Sweepstakes event netted 60,000 points from 454 contacts. We operated on 10, 15, 20 and 40 meters. We need to purchase another 1000 QSL cards. It was moved, seconded and passed to authorize an expenditure of $80 for the cards. Another motion passed to increase the expenditure to $160. Pat thanked the officers for their good work, and said that he thinks that the Club is in good shape. New Business: The following nominations for Club officers were made: Pat Moore for President, Dave Bruce for Vice President, Sam Smith for Secretary, Rich Anderson for Treasurer, Charlie Gray for At-Large Board member #1 and Jack Gregson for At-Large Board member #2 (if needed). The VHF chairman will be appointed by officers. Pat reviewed the activities that he would like the Club to support next year. They are described in the letter sent out to hams by Dave. The Club will participate in the EOC drill to be held next February. We will keep the ARES net active while the drill is in operation. The ARRL DX phone contest will be held March 2-4. An instructional class for the General Class license followed by an exam will take place in March. We ve accomplished a great deal this past year, and, once more, we have big plans for this coming year. We re hoping you ll (re-)join us for these exciting activities. We ll again offer a prime rib dinner with all the trimmings to the membership at our annual meeting January 14. There ll be a continuous slide show of JARC s 2011 activities. We ll hold drawings for a gift certificate from Amateur Radio Supply and a collection of ARRL publications. We ll also hold a flea market. We saw a lot of equipment change hands at last year s banquet. We hope you can take advantage of the great food, good times, and bargains. We especially look forward to meeting with some of our outlying members from around Southeast Alaska who have told us they may be able to travel to Juneau for this event. January 14 Exams contact KL7HFI or JARC@QSL.net. February will be a busy month for JARC. February 1, we ll resume our regular monthly meeting schedule. We meet the first Wednesday of each month at National Weather Service Forecast Office, 8500 Mendenhall Loop Road, February-June, and September-December. We try to have a special program for each meeting. February 6, we ll start a four-week class for prospective new hams wanting their Technician license. Jerry Prindle, KL7HFI will lead the course, and we ll conduct licensing exams at its conclusion, Saturday afternoon, March 3. Jerry led two very successful Technician classes and a general class in 2011. February 10, we ll join with the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management in the Alaska Shield exercise. We ll test our ability to provide backup communications between Juneau s Emergency Operations Center and the Emergency Ops Centers in Anchorage and Fairbanks. March 2-4, if the snow permits and arrangements can be made, KL7JRC will mount a contest entry into the ARRL International DX contest. Alaska is DX in this contest, so our beam and wire antennas pointed at the US are the ticket to some great operating fun. March 3 Exams contact KL7HFI or JARC@QSL.net. March 7, we ll hold our regular monthly meeting. March 10, Pat, AL7L, and Jerry, KL7HFI, will begin a six-week General upgrade class. It will end with an exam session Saturday, April 21. In early April, we ll be setting up KL7JRC in Nugget Mall for the Southeast Outdoor Safety Fair. At the April 4 meeting, weather permitting, we ll be upgrading the antennas at WL7NWS, the club station at the Juneau Forecast Office. April 14 is the ARRL Rookie Roundup. The object of this event is for rookie operators who have been licensed less than three years to make contact with any station, while old timers can only contact rookies. JARC members with working stations are encouraged to enter and/or host a rookie for this six-hour operating event which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. April 21 Exams contact KL7HFI or JARC@QSL.net. At our May 2 meeting, we ll organize work crews to Elmer our new licensees, setting dates to take advantage of spring weather, and lining up personnel to help them erect antennas, assemble needed equipment, and get our new hams on the air.
Throughout the summer, we ll also be taking advantage or warmer weather to continue repairs to the KL7JRC repeater system. In 2011, Jerry, KL7HFI and a host of club members were successful in restoring the linked system to full operation. We replaced link radios, repaired antennas and feedlines, and erected a small tower on Mt. Roberts. This year, we re hoping to extend our repair and upgrade reach into the outlying repeaters on Hoonah and in Haines. June 23-24 is Field Day, with plans to set up KL7JRC at the Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center. Regardless of weather, we ll hold a barbecue. We ll also conduct some training, hold exams, learn about some projects constructed by club members, and welcome guests curious about our emergency capabilities and amateur radio in general. JARC s outstanding FD effort in 2011 placed third in the Northwest Region among class 1-A stations. June 23 Exams contact KL7HFI or JARC@QSL.net. July 4, we ll break out our hand-helds and assist the city committee in organizing the annual parade floats. We suspend regular meetings for July and August, but we ll continue to come together each Wednesday throughout the year at the Safeway dining area at noon. Usually a dozen or so hams eat together and talk radio. In July, we ll schedule a date for Tower Trailer maintenance. Our wonderful 106-foot trailer-mounted tower needs tender loving care to make it last forever. Plan on joining us for a day of greasing, tightening, replacing, installing, testing, and maybe, some operating. We ll plan on firing up the grill for lunch. In August, we ll hold the 2 nd Annual Thank-You Barbecue for our gracious hosts at the National Weather Service Forecast office. They provide us meeting and teaching space, and allow us to maintain a full HF- VHF station, WL7NWS, at the forecast office. We ll coordinate a date around their work schedule and serve up the food, JARC style! September 5, October 3, November 7, and December 5 are the fall and winter JARC meeting nights. We ll have a special program for each of these. September 10, we ll begin another Technician licensing class, ending four weeks later with an exam session. October 6 Exams contact KL7HFI or JARC@QSL.net. October 19-21, we ll operate KL7JRC during the annual Boy Scout Jamboree-On-The-Air. As we did in the Nugget Mall this October, we ll once again be linking Juneau scouts to other scouts around the world during this special operating event. November 18-19, we ll again enter KL7JRC into the ARRL Phone Sweepstakes. A proud crew of ten JARC members posted a whopping 60,000-point score in 2011, operating 30 hours out of the warm room at the Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center. We re looking forward to doing it again! You can be part of this exciting year with JARC. ATTACHMENT 2 (FROM DAVE BRUCE) Don t forget to get your membership renewals in. We have a busy year scheduled in 2012 and need the revenue to plan. We also hope to see more of you participating in some of our events. They really are a lot of fun with a lot of good people. If you have any ideas for an activity come to a meeting or luncheon and let us know. If it is feasible we ll try and include it in our agenda. Remember this is your club and we want to hear from you. We are starting to get the QSL cards in from the two events we participated in this past year. Seems like a lot of people want that Alaskan card. If you get on the air you would be one of those people other hams want to make contact with. If you get your renewal in before the Jan 14 annual meeting we hope to be able to give issue you your new speed-dial (auto-dial) number at that time and give you brochure on how to use it. Pitch becoming a ham to your friends and even enemies. We plan on holding another Technician class in February and after that class a General class is scheduled. A good time for you Techs to upgrade. If there is enough interest I ll bet they would even schedule an Extra class. If your interested come to our meetings and let us know. Our intrepid sailors Kate Glover, Kl3FQ and Rob Cadmus, KL3FP on board the Toyatte are still heading South. According to their website ( http://watchingtelltales.com ) they will be spending Christmas in a place called Zhuatanejo. Think that is somewhere on the Western Coast of South America. Sounds like they are having the adventure of a lifetime. Good luck and safe traveling guys. If any of you have unused receivers or transmitters you might consider either donating it to the Club or put it in the Flea Market sale at the annual meeting Jan 14, 2012. We have a lot of hams with licenses and no equipment. If we don t get them on the air we could easily lose them. Your contributions would be greatly appreciated. It is my understanding we are a non-profit organization and if you donate something to us it is deductible on your income tax. Come to the annual meeting on Jan 14, 2012. You have a chance to see old friends, make new friends, buy some equipment at the flea market, and brag about some of your more exotic contacts. If you know of a ham in Juneau that is not on the air any more bring him to the dinner as your guest. There are approximately 240 licensed operators in Juneau and only 75 of them are club members.
