September 2016 Trillium Services Annual Picnic On August 9th, the carnival was ready for over 200 people who got together at Sampo Beach for the annual Trillium Picnic. The weather was hot but there were root-beer floats to cool down and enjoy! It was very exciting to have The Rambler, a local food truck, this year. Jonathan Reznick and his crew provided us with delicious carnival food, like hot dogs and pulled pork! There was also cotton candy for everyone to enjoy! Brian Annis and the Rambler crew! With DJ Chris Allen playing all the favorites in the background, individuals could dance the night away! The photo booth was a huge hit this year, with a carnival-themed attraction! The games and crafts were a hit, and for those who brought their swim suits, the lake was a great relief from the heat. Vern and Jen Erickson It was great to see everyone and catch up. I am 14 years old, in 8th grade, and go to Ordean East Middle School. I enjoy Star Trek and my favorite characters are Data and Picard. My favorite Pokémon characters are Pikachu and Oshawott. Pink and purple are my favorite colors and my favorite foods are macaroni and cheese and ice cream. Davey Joe Hi there everyone! My name is Davey and I just started with Family Services in June! I really like being outdoors as much as I can. I like to ride my bike, go on hikes, play tennis, and skip rocks into Lake Superior. I am also a huge WWE wrestling fan. My favorite thing to do is to go to pow-wows with my family, where I can sing, dance, and drum for hours! I ll be sure to say Hi when I see you around! Shanna Gubrud My name is Shanna and I just recently moved to Hermantown in June. I am originally from Silver Bay and I just graduated from Silver Bay High School. It has been a lot of fun getting to know Duluth. Some of the places that I really like going to are Canal Park and the aquarium. I also like going to the library and finding new books to read. I have met many new people in the short time I have been here and am learning a lot of new skills where I volunteer at the Vineyard Church. I love Pokémon and have a huge card collection. I just started my final year of Duluth s T-12 program! In my free time I love to draw, watch scary movies, listen to music, play basketball, and go fishing! I caught the biggest walleye of my life pontoon fishing with Nature Rocks this summer! I m excited to meet new people and make friends with them! Denise Blaylock Hi my name is Dee and I came to Trillium in April as a Supervisor for Connections. I had been working with one of the girls before she came to Trillium and was asked to move to the company with her. I have six grown children and am now raising my second set of children, three adorable little Yorkies. I live in the country and I love the peace and quiet. In my spare time I love digging in the dirt and watching things grow. Amelia Chapman Hey, my name is Amelia and I am the new Program Manager in Family Services! I graduated from St. Scholastica with my Bachelors in Health Information Management this May and I plan to get my Registered Health Information Administrator certification in the near future. I love music, the outdoors, traveling and pursuing new experiences! Kassie Kruse-Koivisto Hello, I m Kassie! I started working for Trillium in 2013 as a Program Counselor, and was recently promoted to Supervisor at Kate, Kendra, Carrie, and Nicole s house. In my spare time I love being on the lake, watching hockey and football, attending community festivities with my friends and family, and traveling when I have the opportunity to do so. If you see me around be sure to say hello! Football season is back! The last few months the Vikings have been practicing. I saw them practice before they played Cincinnati and they were looking great. The preseason went very well with four wins! In regular season, week one was an away game at Tennessee with another win. Week two took on the Packers in our new stadium! What a way to open the new stadium with a win against the Packers! It is shaping up to be an excellent season. Right: Barb Carlson The DTA s Director of Marketing, Heath Hickok, put on a wonderful presentation. He explained how to use and navigate the bus routes and brought neat visuals and pamphlets to check out. In addition to that, Heath talked about the new transit center, the history of the DTA, and many other interesting facts about the DTA. After that, the group got to board a DTA bus! Save the Date! He was our second official office dog at Trillium Services. Quincy came to work every day with his mom, Amanda. Trillium Services Annual Holiday Open House He touched many people s lives as they came to join us for meetings or even to visit. He established special relationships with different people and would actually seek them out when he heard their voices. Quincy was the office manager with the other dogs and would let them know when they were making too much noise or were being disruptive. Quincy was our gentle and sensitive boy. Quarterly Newsletter The Trillium Times The summer kept those of us in Nature Rocks! hopping. Butterfly gardening at Hartley Nature Center was a big hit until the big storm hit us in July. We learned about the monarch butterfly and had the chance to see one leave its cocoon. We named him Toby and then he was set free. We celebrated the 4th of July with a picnic at Island Lake Recreation Area and had lots of food and fun times with friends! Pontoon fishing and our annual campout were cancelled due to storm damage to Hi-Banks Resort. We plan to go on an overnight ice fishing camp out in January 2017 at Hi-Banks Resort. 6 Please Join Us! The Task Force group took part in Grandma s Marathon by passing out water at Mile Marker 7. It was a great relief to the runners, since it was one of the hottest races on record! The Trillium Teamsters once again took part in the Rise Above Seizures Walk in August. We walked laps alongside other teams in support and honor of those living with seizures. Also in August, Trillium Task Force met at UMD for a planetarium show! Everyone had an awesome time learning about the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis the northern and southern lights as well as viewing a fun and informative presentation on the planets in our solar system. Quarterly Newsletter mmunit o y C C on tribution The Trillium Times 7 Duluth Air Show s In July, a group from Trillium volunteered at one of the merchandise tents for the Duluth Air Show. This year s show was spectacular and featured the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds! We had a lot of fun getting to see all of the planes and look forward to volunteering next year! This was a very special year as the blood center only had 3 days left of their current blood supply and was in desperate need to refill the blood bank. With the help of many people we were able to meet our quota. With all of these donations we are able to help many people in dire need. Thank you to everyone for their life saving donations! On August 11th, Trillium had 53 people signed up to walk for the Rise Above Seizures Walk down at the Park Point Beach House. Everyone had a great time walking and visiting with each other during dinner provided by Famous Dave s. The Trillium Teamsters! Car Wash On Friday September 9th, volunteers from Trillium held a car wash at the Hermantown and Proctor Holiday Stations to raise money for the Autism Walk. Walkers took to the lakewalk in effort to raise money for Alzheimer s research and awareness. This year Molly Haraldson and Shirley Roine raised a total of $266.16 to donate to the Alzheimer s Walk. Quarterly Newsletter The Trillium Times 8 In August Trillium Works! had the opportunity to continue its partnership with The Lighthouse Center for Vision Loss as they hosted a camp for transition age youth from across Minnesota. Six young people between the ages of 14 and 21 attended the camp. Trillium Works! assisted them in exploring careers that they may want to pursue when they get older through job shadowing and informational interviews. We want to send out an enormous thank you to all of the businesses that kindly took time out of their busy schedules to show us what you do and explain what you need to have a career in your field! For several years before that, Mike would stop in at the front desk and restock their tourist information cards for the Marine Museum and the Lake Superior Zoo. is most proud of learning how to shampoo carpets. It was tricky at first, but now Mike makes it look easy! I like everyone there! - Mike Johnson (Right) During that time, Mike had developed great relationships with some of the staff there, especially Mike, who works at the front desk. Last winter while on a restocking trip, Mike inquired about and applied for a job at the hotel. Mike does excellent work assisting the maintenance man, Ellis, with cleaning and landscaping but often learns new tasks too. Mike Join Us for Trillium Works! Job Club October 20th November 17th December 15th Meetings are held at 1:00pm at the Trillium Office. Job Club is designed to allow everyone to get together and discuss their experiences while working, job developing, and volunteering. It s a great opportunity to learn from other people s experiences. DSP Retreat: Survivor Edition This year s theme for the Direct Service Professionals Retreat was Survivor! Trillium s finest showed up and were put into tribes, ready to compete for the title! The tribes competed in various challenges including obstacle courses, puzzles, blindfolded eating, trivia, tower building, and many more. Throughout the day tribes bonded over soaking wet clothes and frustrating puzzles. This day was able to show that everyone at Trillium is a team and if we work together, we can do anything! Quarterly Newsletter The Trillium Times 9 Employee of the Month Awards I like her a lot. We get along really good. She s a great job coach! - Amanda B. Bethany DeVoe July Bethany DeVoe started working for Trillium Works! in February 2015 and quickly proved to be an extremely valuable asset to the Works! Team. She encourages independence and communication with natural supports at all the places she coaches at. She is a positive role model and builds strong relationships. She has done a great job working with Amanda, giving her the support and encouragement she needed to start a new job. She worked side by side with her ensuring a successful work day, while encouraging Amanda to utilize the support of her co-workers. I like working with her, she s a cool person! - Deb W. Bethany has also done an incredible job working with Deb and Adam at Anytime Fitness. Thanks to her professionalism and hardworking nature, she has had a huge part in the growth of both of their jobs. They have become a lot more independent in their jobs this last year. She is a coach that can be depended on. The managers really like her at the clubs and know they can count on her to make sure the job gets done for the day. We are proud to have Bethany on the team and don t know what we would do without her! - Jen Eplin Kayla Pangell has worked at Trillium Services for a little over 3 years and has worked with quite a few individuals during her time here. Currently she works at Kate, Kendra, Carrie, and Nicole s house. Throughout her employment, Kayla has always been a dedicated, down to earth employee who exudes positivity in any situation. Recently, Kayla and Kate drove down to Mankato to see a Sara Evans concert. Unfortunately, due to bus trouble Sara wasn t able to make it to perform. August In true Kayla fashion, she didn t skip a beat and was able to come up with some other fun things for them to do on their trip. She and Kate still had a great time dancing and laughing, and got to experience music from a band they had never heard. It is exactly this type of employee that deserves to be celebrated, and that is why we are happy to have Kayla as our August Employee of the Month. - Danielle Wildes I like her, she s a hard worker! - Kendra R. Kayla Pangell and Kate Wallin She brings energy to the household and enjoys coffee too! - Nicole B. September Throughout Laura Brekke s time at Trillium Services, she has made and created wonderful relationships with many people here. Currently she oversees a caseload working with Patti, Wanda, Judy, Joanne, Paul, Dan, Roger, and John. Although they are not able to use words, the relationship and communication between each other is uncanny. They are able to read each other and have a deeper understanding of what each other need and want. Laura Brekke with Dan Bianco Laura s approachable, go-getting personality drives her passion to see the best in each person she works with. When Laura started working at Jackson in 2014, she quickly developed a wonderful relationship with all of the guys there, but especially with Dan. Laura s warmth and integrity when working with my brother makes her feel like family. I have a high level of respect for her, and trust her. She does a great job - Joe Bianco In addition to creating a sensory area, Laura s gentle approach with Dan has also helped bring some calm confidence to him and his environment. This approach has been successful in getting Dan more engaged in his community and has opened the door to discovering new passions. - Kate Stark
Quarterly Newsletter The Trillium Times 10 Youth Respite Services Collaboration Trillium is pleased to announce a collaboration with St. Louis County, Dr. Susan Larson Kidd, Kara Long OT, and DRCC to provide Respite to children with Autism. The program is financially supported by a grant that St. Louis County received from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Dr. Susan Larson Kidd The program is designed to work in a multifaceted way. Teaching and training, community support, and service delivery are the main focuses of the project. Stakeholders that include parents, caregivers, staff, case managers, child psychologists and psychiatrists, Fond du Lac Human Services, Boise Forte Human Services, and other community members are gathering for a PATH on September 22, 2016. The PATH process will give the project a clear vision for moving forward. Look for results of the PATH as well as information on a new home where respite services will be provided in the December 2016 Trillium Times! The health beat: Zika Virus: Know the Facts! The Zika Virus has been getting a lot of publicity but what are the real facts about the virus? Zika is spread by a certain species of mosquitos. They are the same species that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses. The mosquitos are aggressive daytime biters but also can bite in the evening. It can also be spread through sex with an infected person. If a mosquito bites an infected individual, that mosquito can pass the virus on to another individual through a mosquito bite. The Zika virus is linked to birth defects during pregnancy causing severe brain defects including microcephaly which is usually is the result of the brain developing abnormally. Minnesota has had a number of cases but they are all related to travel to areas that these mosquitos exist. If you are infected you may not have any symptoms or they could be mild such as fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes, muscle pain or headache and can last for several days to a week. The virus stays in your blood for about a week so a blood test can be done to determine if you have the Zika virus especially if you have traveled to an area that has Zika. So how can you protect yourself from becoming infected? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a listed of recommended insect & tick repellents to us. These can be found at https://www.epa.gov/insect-repellents/findinsect-repellent-right-you. For more information on the Zika virus go to http://www.cdc.gov/zika/ - Cindy Sanders Ivy T. Ivy has been volunteering at The College of St. Scholastica since March of this year. She volunteers at St. Scholastica two days a week while also volunteering at Keystone Bluffs and working at St. Germain s Cabinet, Inc. While at St Scholastica, Ivy helps the athletic coaches with many different tasks. These tasks range from cleaning/organizing/fixing equipment, sorting certificates of former players to be mailed out, and making sure the incoming athletes have signed all the right paperwork. Ivy loves sports and getting to know the wonderful athletic department at St Scholastica. - Krystal Kinney Ivy with one of the nets she repaired. Great work Ivy! Featured Volunteer Site The College of St. Scholastica is a private college with its main campus right here in Duluth. The college was founded in 1912 and was a female only school until 1969. Throughout the years, the athletic department started growing. There are currently 20 athletic teams at the college (10 men s and 10 women s). The mission of the athletic program, ultimately is to engage the mind, to elevate the spirit, and simulate the best effort of all who are associated with the College. This is a movie the whole family will enjoy! --A Living the Dream! By: Jen Erickson I have wanted a car of my own since I was 16 years old. It took me many years to save up enough money to buy the car that was best for me. There were people around me that doubted I could do it. It was challenging at times, especially trying to find a car that was newer with low miles that was in my price range. I had to look at many car dealers around Duluth and Superior to find the right deal. I finally found a car that fit the bill, a 2013 Ford Fiesta with about 55,000 miles. With help from my staff, I even negotiated a 2 year extended warranty! Since I got my car, my life has changed a great deal. I have the freedom to go wherever I want whenever I want. I still go to all my regular places, like the mall and the grocery store. But now, instead of taking the DTA or walking, I drive! Jen Erickson with her new Ford Fiesta! Jamie and Josh Howie were married on July 30th! Marissa and Chris Novak were married on June 3rd! Congratulations to Sarah Kamp! She moved into her own apartment on August 17th!
