International Workcamp Projects 2014-2015 Uganda Pioneers Association (UPA) is a youth voluntary organization working with community projects, workcamps and volunteer exchange. UPA was founded in 1989 by young Ugandans with the aim of mobilizing youth to contribute to community development through voluntary work. UPA has a national secretariat located in Kampala, Nansana and currently operates with 8 Branches in seven districts in Uganda. The Aim of UPA: To promote community based development, intercultural cooperation and youth participation through voluntary work. The Objectives of UPA To encourage the dynamic age group (youth) to take leading roles towards development. To promote and improve natural and acquired skills useful to the community. To promote and exchange cultures to create friendship and mutual understanding. To contribute to the development of community based social services. Workcamps have been used as means for building local communities. Volunteers from all over the world come together and through common efforts to build community centers, schools, health units, small scale farming plots and much more has been constructed. We also engage in awareness creation through sensitizing communities on topical. Thematic issues including HIV/AIDS, Conflict management, Community sanitation, Reproductive health, Cultural heritage, environment conservation, Peace building to mention a few. Friendship cross borders has been created and barriers between people from different cultures broken down. Workcamps as a tool for development Through the workcamps; the Participants acquire skills, experience, get new ideas, explore or discover their potentialsand are exposed to development issues especially through the exchange of good practices. The Community benefits through: participation, education, sensitization, poverty reductions and new structures. In 2014-2015 UPA has planned a total of 14 workcamps. The projects are hosted by the UPA branches and partner projects or community groups across the country. The themes of the workcamps vary from, Environment conservation and Sanitation, Sustainable Development, construction, children, agriculture, sports, cultural heritage and HIV/AIDS. International volunteers 250 Euros International participants are required to pay a fee of 250 Euros. The fee covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival in Uganda, Orientation at the UPA guesthouse, local transport to and from the workcamp, food and accommodation during the workcamp. The fee also contributes to the running of activities taking place during the workcamp and communication prior to the camp.
Please note The fee does not cover transport back to the airport after the project. Volunteers interested in being taken back to the airport shall be required to ask UPA for the arrangement. It will cost the volunteer an extra 20 25 Euros for this service. To allow the best preparations, participants are advised to arrive a day before commencement of the project applied for. Accommodation is basic. In most cases workcampers will be sleeping in community halls or school classrooms. Workcampers should bring mosquito nets and beddings. Local food will be prepared by the workcampers on charcoal stoves or open fire. Food will be basic but you won t find much variety as you maybe used to. In case you need to have a special meal/diet, you have to buy it yourself. For more information about the specific camps and activities UPA provides an info sheet on request. Cancellation of participation Cancellation of participation before the project resumes while in Uganda attracts a 50% refund only. In case a volunteer cancels his/her participation during the workcamp, it is not possible to refund any amount of the participation fee back to them. This is because a lot of money goes to the communication, airport pick up, orientation, prior preparations before the workcamp and other logistics. However if a volunteer cancels his/her participation before arriving in Uganda, he will be given back the entire fee if payments were made prior to their arrival in the country. About Uganda Uganda is a beautiful country gifted by nature. Volunteers may take time offafter the workcamp to visit National parks (to see Lions, Elephants, Cobs and Buffalos etc), Ssese Islands, go white water rafting, visit the mountain gorillas and enjoy the Ugandan sun. Tourism opportunities UPA can now assist with subsidized costs to volunteers interested to reach tourist destinations in Uganda including Murchison Falls National Park (250 US $), Queen Elizabeth National Park (300 US $), Semuliki National Park for male and female hot springs experience, nature walk, pigmy cultural dances as well as birds viewing (US $250) Kazinga Channel, Salt Lakes, Forest walks, and game viewing. Mountains Elgon and Rwenzori for hiking and climbing (US $ 350), Lake Mburo National Park for Boat trips, guided walking safaris, horse riding (US $ 250). Ssese Islands for Sun/sand bathing, forest walks, birds viewing and relaxation (US $200). The Mighty Nile River Nile for, horse riding, boat trips to the top of the river, bungee jumping (US $ 150). Promoting international cultural integration through music and dance production 1 UPA Central Branch is located in Wakiso District at the premises of UPA Head office in Nansana, Ocheng Zone, eight (8) miles Hoima Road not far from Kampala. It is approximately 12 kilometers from Kampala city. UPA Cultural troupe is committed to promote community sensitization and awareness through music, dance and drama. The Cultural troupe started in 1994 as a pilot project of UPA. The troupe was started mainly to be used for promoting cultures, running awareness campaigns, fundraising and marketing UPA and her activities. Project Objectives To promote intercultural cooperation among youth and other group members. To enhance educational awareness through music dance and drama. To make local musical instruments for the Cultural Troupe, schools and the local community. To enhance knowledge and skills sharing through music, dance and drama. Activities Instruments:Development of traditional music instrument and renovation of older instruments: o o o Adungu (Guitars) Ngoma (Drums) Madinda (Xylophone) Traditional Dance: traditional dance lessons carried out by a trained instructor. Modern Dance: Learn basics of a modern dance 2 (Hip-Hop, Breakdance, Dancehall ) Marketing activities of the UPACT: o o o Design and creation of UPACT promotional materials Outsource a place that will host UPACT performances from the workcamp (bars, markets, churches ) Promote UPACT through a project, where by the community is profiting, i.e.: cleaning the local market Performances in traditional and modern dances Videos and audio recording: filming of a video that shows the ongoing activities of the workcamp and that will be used for promotion of UPACT. Capture moments, events, images, activities and make videos for that purpose. Drama Workshop: There is the possibility to develop small scenes, depending on the skills of the participants. Expected Outcome Renovated and newly developed above mentioned instruments. Participants performing on stage the dances learnt and practiced during the workcamp Promotional material developed. Cultural and educational visits Beneficiaries Participation Who qualify to participate The Host Community During the workcamp period the participants will visit the following places: A visit to Wamala Tombs a 197 years old cultural heritage which is the burial ground for the 29th King of Buganda, the late Ssekabaka Suuna II Kalema Kasinjo Mukaabya Sekkyungwa who reigned from 1832 until October 1856. Visiting Nansana Community Market Climbing Kabulengwa hill to have a view of all Nansana and surrounding suburbs. Cultural Nights will be organized and participants will display items, songs and dances from their home countries and traditions. Note: There is also the possibility of visiting the Uganda Museum, Entebbe Wild life Education Centre, Ghaddafi Mosque and Botanical Garden and beaches all found in a radius of not more than 40 kilometers from the camp site but at the cost of interested volunteers. The beneficiaries are the UPACT members, workcamp participants and the community. The project expects 15 participants maximum with a composition of people from other regions of Uganda and International volunteer. Participants will work 6 hours daily from Monday to Friday. Weekends are for social interaction and/or excursions unless if the official camp programme has an activity. Open minded, ready to interact with other people of different cultural background Willing to share his/her experiences Flexible to live/stay in simple life conditions Flexible to the taste of local and basic foods Ready to work on the projects No experience needed The people in this part of Uganda are multi-tribal with the majority population being Baganda. And the major language spoken is Luganda also a big percentage of people speaking English well. The major foods eaten in this region are matooke, cassava, sweet potatoes, rice, beans, ground nuts, yams etc. Like most regions in Uganda people in this community always welcome visitors and always interested to talk/work with people from other cultural backgrounds Accommodation Accommodation will be in simple rooms. Participants will be required to carry own mat and sleeping bag. The camp site has simple bathrooms and pit latrines no showers A simple cooking shelter (Kitchen) Participants are requested to bring with them mosquito nets. Meals The food is basic and simple. Be ready to take the same dish for some days in a row. Health Services Water Source Fruits can at times be availed for the campers from local markets. Participants will chose food to prepare depending on the availability. Workcampers will use charcoal or firewood to prepare the meals. If you need more fruits/extra meals/special diet you can get it on your own cost. Nansana has several medical clinics at a distance of less than a kilometer and the main hospitals are located in Kampala City, 20 minutes drive. There is always running water at Nansana campsite. If not available participants shall have to collect water from the nearby spring about 600 meters from the site.
Climate What to Bring The temperatures in April usually range between 16 and 29 C with some rains during the month. This region is very green. It may turn out to be wet and chilly at times. In April/May, during the period of the workcamp, the temperature ranges between 25 to30 degrees centigrade with rain and sunshine intervals. Rain season in Kampala is wet, cool and sometime mild. Carry gum boot -big shoes, rain coat or umbrella is recommendable. Participants shall be required to bring own sleeping bag, mat, pillow, mosquito net, sun cream, mosquito repellent, working gloves and boots/shoes. Light working clothes during working hours and warm clothes at night, as it may turn out to be chilly or cold; Musical instrument (optional); torch or flash light; water purifiers (optional); Personal effects (i.e. soap, toothpaste, toiletries) It would be nice if you can bring your national flag, common art facts of your country, stories, games, pictures and local recipes. It would be helpful for the cultural presentations about your country and for any social interactions. Above all do not forget a happy and positive attitude. NB: Shorts, dresses and skirts should reach knee length for cultural consideration. Smoking in public is illegal while engagement in drug/harsh carries a life prison sentence. Improved security and health for a better living The workcamp shall take place in Galuwero Zone L.C1 Village, Luwero Town Council, Luwero District. The Project site is located 2km on Ngoma rd, from Luwero, 60km North of Kampala on Kampala - Gulu Road. Luwero District Is located in the central part of Uganda boarded by Wakiso District in the south, Nakasongola in the north, Nakaseke in the North-west Luweero Town Council has a fast growing Urban setting with a fast growing population. Like any development, the area will not escape the problem of formation of slums and its associated challenges of poor sanitation and hygiene. Inevitably, the high rural- urban immigration practices in all growing towns incur a high impact on the declining sanitation standards while on the other hands the associated problems also continues to grow at very high rate. If this deteriorating sanitation and hygiene standards goes unchecked then the populations particularly children and women are exposed to high risks or become vulnerable to the possibilities of the outbreaks of deadly but would be preventable diseases like cholera, Malaria and dysentery. Basajjansolo Memorial Training Centre (BMTC) is a project of Basajjansolo Community Development Association (BACODA), a community-based organisation founded and registered in 2003 under Ref NO. CD - 312-03 of Luwero District Community Development Department. BACODA is committed to work for the plight of HIV/AIDS, other disadvantaged orphans and vulnerable children through offering them basic education, life skills and career training. BMTC today offers education to 240 children aged 6 14 years most of them orphans, half orphans, vulnerable children and those living with families earning less than 1 US dollar a day. Other children are living in the boarding section of the school. At the moment the
school has still a temporary fencing around the school perimeters. To provide maximum security and to fulfill the requirements of the ministry of education a wall fence as to be built. Therefore, this project intends to intensify on the security of the children through building a wall fence and earlier on started efforts of improving sanitation of the Luweero community. Project Objectives To increase on the security of the children in the boarding section Activities To fulfill the requirement of the ministry of education To reduce the prevalence of preventable diseases in the community of Luweero Town Council To transform the local youth into promoters of new measures aimed at promoting sanitation. Where the sickness insists, the project site is located only one and half hours drive to the main Hospitals in Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda. The Project site has access to a bore hole located only is 250-300 meters away from the project. In case of emergency there is piped water if power is available in the vicinity and a 10,000 litre tank which harvests rain water. Project Title Project Dates 3 rd 21 st June 2014 Duration Project Code Project Host Project theme Project Location Project background International workcamp on Community Sanitation at Fish Landing Sites 3 weeks UPA/003/14 UPA Pakwach Branch Promoting Community Hygiene The workcamp will take place at UPA Pakwach Branch, Prumdepma permises, Kamana B Village, Pakwach Town Council is in Nebbi District North western region. Pakwach Branch is located 420 km (6-7 hours) drive from Kampala. It s on the banks of River Nile, 1 km on Kampala Arua Road. The Branch is located in Jonam County, Nebbi District, North western Uganda. Jonam is warm area where little agricultural and fishing activities dominate the activities engaged in by the Local Communities. The Communities mainly live on the scarce natural resources that are strained by environmental degradation. Some food supplies come from neighboring districts to supplement the little production. Situated on the business transit route to Southern Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Pakwach Town is exposed to multiplicity of preventable and infectious diseases like diarrhorea, worms, malaria, HIV/AIDS etc. These infections are due to many factors like ignorance; (attitude of the people), heavy human trafficand dirty conditions of life normally leading to poor hygiene bearing in mind that the fishing villages are in Pakwach Town itself. UPA Pakwach Branch has for a while been engaged in initiatives that address Community hygiene and is committed to designing new methods. The international workcamp is therefore designed to scale up the Community hygiene effort in Phase I at the three fishing Villages (Jabedo wie Gilwet, Wadi Kiboro, Amor Jukaal) and the Communities along the banks of River Nile within Pakwach Town Council. Project Objectives To sensitize the fishing community on primary health care. Promote sanitation among families in the community. Providing modern drying racks for the fishing community. Provision of affordable sanitary facilities at the Fish landing centres. Activities Raising movable drying racks for the fishing Villages. Cleaning water sources. Digging rubbish pits. Cleaning and leveling the Compound, planting flowers, trees, directing drainage channels. Renovating on the existing pit latrines (walls, floors, Roofing) all with Local materials. Community dialogue, sensitization, mobilization and advocacy on their own sanitation. Expected outcome 5-10 drying racks to be established 6 rubbish pits dug with 2 pits each landing site. 3 Fish Landing Sites cleaned and redesigned. Pit latrines renovated. The community knowledgeable about sanitation and hygiene in their village.
Cultural and Educational Visits Visit Pacer Blacksmith Communities. Visit the Fish Landing Sites along the River Nile banks. Viewing of River Nile entry points into Lake Albert delta like in Panyimur. Country side walks in the Local Community. Visit the site of 2013 eclipse Owiny Primary School Note There are available opportunities to visit like Tourist places, but at the cost of interested volunteers: Murchison Falls National Park in Paraa, Hot and Cool Amur pii springs in Panyimur, Nyagak Falls, Aguu Hills in Paidha, Lendu Forest (Zeu Sub County). Volunteers on this Project will have the opportunities to interact with mostly the fishermen/fish wives and Community at large. Accommodation Accommodation will be in simple rooms. Participants will be required to carry own mat and sleeping bag. The camp site has simple bathrooms and pit latrines no showers A simple cooking shelter (Kitchen) Participants are requested to bring with them mosquito nets. Meals The food is basic and simple. Project Title International workcamp on construction of volunteers house and playscheme with children of Kikooba Infant school Project Date 3 rd 21 th June 2014 D u r a t i o n Project Code Project Host Project Theme 3 weeks UPA/004/14 Kikooba UPA Branch Intercultural exchange through games and work Project Location The project is situated in Kikooba village, 2km from Kituuma town at 74 km on Kampala - Hoima road North west of Kampala City. The project is located in Kiboga District boardedbynakaseke District in the northeast, Masindi in the northwest, Hoima in the west, Mubende district in the south and Kibale district in the south west. Project background Kikooba is one of the oldest branches of Uganda Pioneers Association started in 1990 with majority members being old women and men. This is one of the interesting UPA projects that has highly motivated old members joining a workcamp project. UPA has since built a health Centre to help the community access primary health care, immunization and other basic health services. Besides, UPA has tried to recruit and place Medium Term volunteer to help at the school and the health centre, but the efforts of the volunteers have often been let down by the absence of a decent structure for the volunteers. The workcamp project participantswillalsoengage in construction of a house to host the v o l u n t e e rs. The workcampers shall also engage with the children of the community school (Kikooba Infant School) that has about 100 pupils with games, art and lessons.

A local market is also on Tuesday at Bukomero every two weeks. A cultural night will be organized and participants will display items, songs and dances from their home countries and traditions. Luwero District is located in the central part of Uganda boarded by Nakasongola District in the north, Masindi in the northwest, Kampala district in the south, Kayunga district in east and Kiboga district in the west. Boowa Kibira lies 40km on Kampala-Gulu road.
Project Background Kibira mixed farm was started 2004 with the purpose of generating income but also to demonstrate to the farmers of Kibira village and the environs the better and improved farming practices. Around 75% of Ugandans live on subsistence farming as the main employment and source of livelihood. The poor farming practices involving poor seed selection, improper spacing and poor storage practices have lead to low production and very little is saved for income. Kibira demonstration farm is on 5 hectares of land rearing animals and growing different types of crops. There are chicken, goats and cows. On the side of crops we have coffee plants, different types of banana plants, maize crops, different fruit trees, sweet potatoes, cassava, and ground nuts. The farm aims at providing a place where farmers can visit to learn the better and improved farming methods order to increase on the production for a better livelihood. During the period of the workcamp it is harvesting time for the coffee and maize plantation of the farm. The workcampers will be involved in the harvesting process. The farm is surrounded by school, which shall be involved in the workcamp through engaging with the children in games and sports and in painting the outside walls of the four schools. It involves painting and also drawing decorative pictures on all of them. Uganda Pioneers Association Terego Branch (UPATB) a community non Governmental organization was established by the group of Women and youths in Terego county, Arua district in greater west Nile region and registered with District community Development department Arua Office 2008. The Project will be implemented by the Uganda Pioneers Association and the Randra- Odupi community Club members to bring and change the Negative attitude of two different sex especially women and men to understand the four major causes of Domestic violence and how to solved in their Families (societies). Randra-Odupi community has hosted the large number of two country refugees E.g. Sudanese and Congolese. The women and girls in Randra Odupi community and also the refugees settled there are not well educated but they are all hardworking house wives and capable caring for their children and families. Most household incomes are dependent on women and girls who often have to deal with the day to day needs, e.g. providing food, clothing, health care needs, working in the garden etc. The project targets both nationals and refugee violated women, girls, school girl dropouts and under aged marriages between 13-65 years to acquire the knowledge and skills in order to manage their families and continue to form village civic education clubs to educate other community members who are facing domestic violence. The surveys and feasibility studies drawn from experiences have all provide this to be true, so since July 2013, the project committee members have been meeting to find some solutions to this situation. Consultations and debates organized showed that, in order to end the domestic violence against women and girls, there was need to carry out monthly community outreaches and formation of village civic education clubs in each village and clusters in refugee settlement camps. Project objectives To offer violated women and girls opportunity to interact and share good practices as means to reduce stigma and discrimination in societies through writings/group discussions. To promote partnership and networking amongst the community based organizations. To promote gender equality in the community through women and girls empowerment. Improving living conditions of the volunteers and the members of the community UPA Central Branch is located in Wakiso District at the premises of UPA Head office in Nansana, Ocheng Zone, eight (8) miles Hoima Road not far from Kampala. It is approximately 12 kilometers from Kampala city. Uganda Pioneers Association has her head office and Guesthouse located in Ocheng village, Nansana Town Council, Wakiso District at 12 kilometres on Hoima Road North west of Kampala. The current structure hosts UPA head office and a Guesthouse for only 15 volunteers. For a while UPA has had to rent outside for excess volunteers. For the past 3 years UPA concentrated on improving the working environment through expansion of the office space. With the completion of the new office block and on shifting the offices, it will now give way to embark on a task to start on major renovations to improve the living conditions of the volunteers. The renovation is intended to both improve on the structures and also to construct a new
toilet, shower and kitchen to better the living conditions of the volunteers. Painting, making outside resting shades and laying floor tiles shall be part of the other activities to be done. The camp also targets the community where sensitization workshops shall be conducted on thematic issues; that is environment and sanitation. Cleaning and waste management activities with the community members in public places, like markets, streets, etc. Project Objectives To expand on space for international volunteers living in the Guesthouse.
