MINISTRY OF TOURISM, ARTS AND CULTURE REPUBLIC OF MALDIVES TOURISM PERFORMANCE OF MALDIVES IN THE YEAR 2012 INTRODUCTION Sun, Sea, Sand & Surf combined with genuine smiles and a soothing atmosphere, Maldives seems to be nature s custom made answer for every holiday maker s needs. From romantic getaways, to fun filled family holidays; singles retreat with vivid night life and just to spend lazy days dozing in the sun. The Maldivian tourism industry is renowned for its versatility. Spread over an area of roughly 90,000 square miles in the Indian Ocean, off the south western coast of India, Maldives is a chain of 1190 coral islands. With most of the land mass of the country, which is about 27% of its territory, laying barely a meter above the sea level, Maldives is an idyllic haven for people who are looking to get away from their fast paced lives and enjoy a truly relaxing atmosphere. Its unique geography ensures that each resort in Maldives is totally self contained, with pristine white beaches, lush tropical vegetation, a virtual haven of colorful marine life and a truly laid back atmosphere to calm even the most stressed out nerves. The climate of Maldives hovers between 24-33 C all year round, with mild showers during the monsoon season (May October). Tourism in Maldives started in 1972 in a very small scale. What initiated as a small business venture with only one resort and tourism concentrated near the capital city, this industry has now expanded throughout the country. With more than 100 resorts so far, the industry has transformed into a multi-million dollar golden goose contributing more than 30% to the GDP.

-2- TOURISM PERFORMANCE IN 2012 Uninhabited islands in the Maldives are developed into resorts, taking into consideration the one-island-one-resort concept which is unique to the Maldives, offering splendid experience in luxury vacations. There are four types of accommodation facilities currently available for tourists in the Maldives; namely tourist resorts, tourist hotels, tourist guest houses, and live a board safari vessels. At the end of 2012, there were 105 resort islands with a total bed capacity of 22,889 registered at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, of the Maldives. (MoTAC) With one hotel out of operation, total number of hotels decreased from 20 in 2011 to 19 by the end 2012 and the bed capacity registered at the MoTAC is 1627 beds. Guest houses in the Maldives offer budget accommodation for tourists visiting local islands in the Maldives. Previously this type of accommodation was available only in the capital city, Male. Since 2009, guest houses are being developed in other local islands. And at the end of 2012, there were 1101 beds in 75 guest houses registered at the MoTAC. Although, guest houses contribute only a few percent to the total bed capacity, this form of accommodation is seen rapidly increasing within the Industry. Live aboard floating beds, commonly known as safari vessels, is another fast growing form of accommodation in the Maldives. A Live-aboard vacation in the Maldives offers an onboard holiday, with an adventurous approach combined with various recreational activities, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, wave surfing and various kinds of game fishing. Theses vessels cruise around islands, sailing to scheduled locations such as marine protected areas in the Maldives. At the end of 2012, there were 154 safari vessels registered at MoTAC, to accommodate tourists in the Maldives. The witnessed continuous growth of tourism, with steady increases in demand and supply over the years, allows us to consider that Tourism Sector has a potential for steady growth in GDP share in the long-term future. Even now various exquisite guest facilities provided are being increased to cater to the substantial demands created with multiple efforts made to attract more visitors. Maldives is identified around the world with the slogan The Sunny side of life which is used as the main marketing tool. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, of Maldives (MoTAC), have started the year 2012, with high goals of reaching one million tourists this year. However due to

-3- many constraints within the country, with political up rises and other inevitable impacts of the industry, only a rise of 2.9% is seen from last year, which totals to 958,027 tourists. During the year 2012, Maldives immensely improved its status of trust, of the investors and its visitors by the achievement of many international awards, like the colorful awards of The Word Travel Awards of 2012 and the best fourth destination in Asia by Smart Travel Asia Online Magazine. These awards proved the popularity of the Maldives among its visitors as well as it created the opportunity for our country to be publicized as a significant product of world leading travel destination. In the award ceremony held at the inter-continental of Singapore on 14th of October 2012, Maldives as a tourism destination received four awards. Namely, Indian Oceans leading cruise destination, Indian Oceans leading destination, Indian Oceans leading honeymoon destination and Indian Oceans leading tourist board. Other than the mentioned, 11 awards of the same ceremony was achieved by different island destinations of Maldives individually. These include; Indian Oceans Leading Airport- Male, International Airport, Indian Oceans Leading boutique hotel, Island Hideaway at Dhonakulhi Spa Resort & Marina Indian Oceans Leading Family Resort, Lily Beach Resort & Spa Indian Oceans Leading Green Resort, Sun Island Resort & Spa Indian Oceans Leading Hotel, Lux Maldives Indian Oceans Leading Luxury Hotel, Baros Maldives Indian Oceans Leading New Hotel, Ananthara Kihaavah Villa s Indian Oceans Leading Spa Resort, Gili Lankanfushi Indian Oceans Leading Travel Agency, Atoll Paradise Indian Oceans Leading Villa, Baros Residence, Baros Maldives Indian Oceans Leading Water Villa Group, Adhaaran Prsetige Resort Along with the recognitions and awards achieved, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) initiated several promotional activities which involves marketing Maldives as a travel destination. These programs included, participation of 22 Fairs hosted in 15 Countries, conducting 14 Roadshows in 14 Cities of 6 Countries, provision of familiarization trips to 84 people from international media

-4- associates & single individual writers, and for a first in Maldives, an introduction of a iphone application package Maldives Destination Guide are some activities carried on for the Promotion & Marketing of the year 2012. World Famous star s such as David Beckum s Family, Beyonce and Jay Z, have spent days holidaying in the Maldives. Whilst, many famous stars like Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes has spent their Honey moon days in the peaceful heavenly island destination, proving the famousness, for it s sensational beauty and the holistic approach of guest services provided. At the beginning of tourism in the Maldives, the policy was to develop resorts closer to the airport and away from the local islands. Under the second tourism Master Plan, tourism expanded to new atolls, with the implementation of the Third Master Plan a new policy was adopted, with this new policy tourism was further expanded to the whole country with plans to develop domestic airports to cover all atolls. Today, with the countless efforts of the Government and civilians to develop the countries infrastructure, three domestic airports are operated around the country with, modern facilities. Transportation services are very advanced with the availability of contemporary services like, Speed boat Services and the Air Taxi Services to any Atoll or island of the Country. With the advancement in development, very recently in 2013 another international airport Villa International Airport was established in Alifu Alifu Maamigili, which surely will benefit the tourism Industry of Maldives abundantly. The Government of Maldives has now opened the chance for international investors to participate in development projects, with the objective to cater and develop the Maldivian tourism sector in a positive manner. Tourism Sector of Maldives is seeing unremitting enlargement with the help of many collaborators like the international contributors, investors such as the world leading brands of Hotel Pioneer s such as Hilton, Sheraton, Park-Hyatt, Shangri-La, Viceroy, Jumeirah and Taj. To name a few recently opened world famous, high class destinations in the Maldives, in late 2011 and early 2012, with extraordinary guest services are, Jumeirah Dhevanafushi opened april 2011 Jumeirah Vittaveli opened December 2011 Dusit Thani Maldives opened February 2012

-5- Niyama Maldives-opened March 2012 Viceroy Maldives- opened April 2012 As per the statistics of tourist arrivals of the year 2012, European markets contributed about 54% of the total visitors to the Maldives. European Market being the largest market segment, the next largest contributing area is the Asia and the Pacific, which covers about 40.1% of the total arrivals of the year 2012. Market changes are initialized as opportunities to increase our catering abilities, and to investigate the prospect of increasing revenue generated from the industry. The shift in demographics profile of major markets from Western Europe to North East Asia, especially China is reflected in the declines of average stay of tourists. The Chinese market overtook all European markets and became the market leader by strengthening its position with a healthy market share. This shift has caused a decline in average stay of tourist in the country. Average duration of stay has decreased from 8.5 days in 2007 to 6.7 days in 2012 After calculations for the average duration of stay of the year 2012, the highest average stay of 7.7 days was seen in the month of March. With the increase in bed capacity, the actual tourism bed nights have been increasing steadily over the years. The total registered bed nights of resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and safari vessels in 2012 were 6,450,794 which was a decline of -1.2% compared with 2011. The national average occupancy rate recorded is 70.6% total. By the emerging attentiveness of tourists from all around the world, it can be said that the Maldivian tourism industry will incur lavishly for the years to come. And today methods and means to develop this island destination in a sustainable way, with high hope of publicizing and catering to new markets, with miscellaneous agendas of developing other types of tourism like MICE Tourism and Cultural Tourism, are discussed and planned among the higher authorities. All in all, the year 2012 is measured as an average year for the performance of the Tourism Industry of the Maldives, with little changes of statistics in all areas, which will be considered as normal changes in island destinations like the Maldives.

CONCLUSION -6- Although Europe and America remains as the world s best tourist destination, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) forecast South Asia as a promising region for tourism. Gradual shift in the growth of tourism in Maldives and in other South Asian countries proves a promising future for these countries, with the above forecasts. Maldives has experienced rapid economic growth over the past three decades. It has moved from an under developed country to a developing country in 2011 due to increased productivity, grasped from the immense benefits from tourism. All stakeholders in the Maldivian tourism industry are aware of the strengths that draw tourists to Maldives and have been working diligently to ensure that the natural environment remains as undisturbed as possible. The government of Maldives has given its full support to the development of the industry and keeps a close eye to ensure that all regulations are being complied with. Given that out of the 1190 island that make up this nation, only 200 of which is inhabited and over 100 islands utilized for tourism purposes. A lot of idyllic islands scattered across the country that are perfect for development are still there. Hence the vision for creating and operating a sustainable environment friendly tourism industry remains increasingly positive. The tourism industry of Maldives is sure to become an even brighter light in the international business arena, with a colorful and bright future ahead of it.
