Journey of Aeneas tracing The Aeneid Through the Mediterranean Aboard the all-suite, 57-cabin Corinthian II AUGUST 30 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 EARLY BOOKING SAVINGS RESERVE NOW!

Dear Traveler, Virgil s epic poem the Aeneid is a story of inherited glory the glory that passed from fallen Troy to Rome. This summer we invite you to join Explorers Club lecturer and host Shelley Wachsmann (FN 93) on a voyage retracing Aeneas legendary route across the Mediterranean, and exploring centers of four of the great civilizations of the ancient world: the Minoan, Phoenician, Greek, and Roman. With Virgil s Aeneid as our guide, we will visit the islands, caves, and ancient cities that are the setting for the story of Aeneas, the prince of Troy who escaped the destruction of his city and, after wandering across the Mediterranean, founded in Italy a new kingdom from which the Roman Empire would spring. At Troy, setting of the Trojan War and the starting point of Aeneas s epic journey, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of nine cities built over a period of 3,400 years. On the island Delos, site of the oracle that Aeneas visited, marvel at the excavated shrines to the gods; and at Cumae, see where the Sibyl guided Aeneas into the Underworld. We will also encounter interesting historical and cultural contrasts, such as ancient Phoenician and Imperial Roman structures standing almost side-by-side at Carthage, where Aeneas was shipwrecked and won the love of Queen Dido. Layers of history will be revealed to us amid scenic landscapes at each of our destinations, including the magnificent Minoan Palace of Knossos on Crete, Sicily s lovely medieval village of Erice and Doric Greek temple in the remote valley of Segesta, and the vast Roman city of Pompeii, preserved through the centuries by volcanic ash and pumice from Mt. Vesuvius. Our ship, the elegant, all-suite Corinthian II, is the perfect vessel for this voyage. Accommodating a maximum of 114 guests in 57 suites, each affording captivating views of the passing landscape, Corinthian II features a restaurant that accommodates all guests at a single seating, spacious lounges, a library, a fitness center, and broad decks for sunning or admiring the scenery from the comfort of your deck chair. Explorers Club lecturer and host Shelley Wachsmann is a nautical archaeologist who has spent much of his career studying ancient ships and seafaring in the ancient Mediterranean. A congenial traveling companion, Professor Wachsmann and a team of onboard lecturers will offer a series of lectures and informal discussions during the voyage, helping to bring to life the story of the Aeneid and illuminate the archaeological and historical contexts of the sites that we visit. Please join Professor Wachsmann this fall aboard Corinthian II as we journey into the realm of gods and heroes, to places that often seem to have barely changed since Hector met Achilles outside the walls of Troy. Sincerely, Lorie Karnath (FI 89) President The Explorers Club P.S. Space aboard Corinthian II is limited to just 57 cabins (all suites), and this voyage is being co-sponsored by several other organizations, so we urge you to contact the Explorers Club Travelers office at 800-856-8951 or ect@studytours.org to reserve your space today. About The Explorers Club Founded in 1904, the world famous Explorers Club is a multi-disciplinary professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research and scientific exploration. Members include the most famous explorers, scientists, and conservationists of the 20 th century. The Explorers Club Travelers is an educational program of The Explorers Club that invites the public to join distinguished explorers and scientists on educational tours to remote areas, focusing on natural and cultural history. Each participant on an Explorers Club Travelers program receives a complimentary one-year Friend Membership in The Explorers Club, which brings with it a subscription to The Explorers Club Log and Journal, and invitations to special Club events, including the gala Annual Dinner. Explorers Club Lecturer and Host Shelley Wachsmann (FN 93) is the Meadows Professor of Biblical Archaeology in the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University, where he has been teaching courses in ancient seafaring and biblical archaeology since 1990. Born in Canada, Professor Wachsmann immigrated to Israel in 1968, where he earned all three of his degrees in Near Eastern Archaeology from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem s Institute of Archaeology (Ph.D. 1990). From 1976 to 1989 he served as the Inspector of Underwater Antiquities for the Israel Department of Antiquities and Museums, during which time he was directly responsible for the nautical heritage of Israel. Professor Wachsmann has served on The Explorers Club s Science Advisory Board (Marine Archaeology) since 1993 and is a Life Member of the Archaeological Institute of America. Professor Wachsmann has published four books and over sixty articles on the results of his field research and on other archaeological subjects. He recently completed a book dealing with a 13 th -century b.c. wooden ship model from Gurob, Egypt, which is the most detailed representation known of a Helladic (Greek) galley from the designated period of Odysseus. Professor Wachsmann has carried out extensive fieldwork in the eastern Mediterranean. Most recently, in 2003-2006, he directed the Canadian team of a joint Canadian-Greek expedition in search of fleets lost during the Persian War in the early 5 th century b.c. (http://nautarch.tamu.edu/pwss/homepage). From 2007 to 2009 he annually led a deep-water survey studying the Crete-to-Egypt trade route in antiquity (http://ina.tamu.edu/danaos/index.html). Also since 2007, Professor Wachsmann has lectured on three Explorers Club-sponsored Mediterranean voyages From Venice to Sicily, From the Canals of Venice to the Walls of Troy, and the Journey of Odysseus. Additional Onboard Lecturers Professor Robert Gurval of the UCLA Department of Classics is an award-winning teacher who offers courses ranging from one on ancient Rome to a seminar on representations of Cleopatra from antiquity to HBO s Rome. His main research interests focus on the intersection of politics and literature in imperial Rome. Jonathan Hall is Professor and Chair of Classics, and Professor in the Department of History at the University of Chicago. He is primarily a historian of ancient Greece, but his current research on the relationship between literary texts and material culture in both the Greek and Roman worlds prepares him perfectly to help us understand Vergil s Aeneid in historical context. Jeffrey Hurwit, representing Smithsonian, is Philip H. Knight Professor of Art History and Classics at the University of Oregon and one of this country s leading scholars of ancient Greek art. He is the author of numerous works on the art and civilization of Archaic and Classical Greece and has studied and taught in Greece and Italy. Professor Hurwit has been a popular lecturer on several previous study tours in the Mediterranean. All lecturers are subject to change. ect@studytours.org WWW.explorers.ORG

More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Corinthian II accommodates only 114 guests in 57 suites. Corinthian II s limited guest capacity, fine facilities, and distinctive style of operation attract like-minded travelers who return again and again to enjoy its custom-crafted itineraries and a style of cruising that is rarely found today. More than just a cruise, each voyage provides a comprehensive experience that reveals the singular aspects of the destinations. Aboard, a sense of community and a spirit of camaraderie prevail. All of Corinthian II s suites face outside, providing views of the sea and landscape. Several have a private balcony. There are expansive open deck areas and attractive facilities, including a gym, library, beauty salon, two lounges, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and an outdoor cafe. A spacious restaurant accommodates all guests in an open, unassigned seating. The cuisine is outstanding, and the overall service is efficient and friendly while unobtrusive.
