Choquequirao The last remarkable jewel of Inca architecture Ecuador Colombia Brazil Pacific Ocean Lima Choquequirao Cuzco Bolivia Lake Titicaca Chile SPLENDOR OF CHOQUEQUIRAO Only opened to tourism in 1995, Choquequirao ( cradle of gold in Quechua) is certainly a marvelous attraction for those travelers seeking new and wonderful destinations. Although the first report of Choquequirao dates back to 1710, and it was visited by several famous individuals, including Eugene de Sartiges, Charles Wiener and Hiram Bingham, little was actually known about this archaeological complex until a group of researchers under a UNESCO project- cleared the vegetation from the site and revealed this impressive Inca citadel. Choquequirao
Much of the charm of Choquequirao lies in the fact that there are no roads, rail links or riverboats providing access to the site. The only way to get there is the old way, on foot and with the help of pack animals. It takes two demanding and yet unforgettable days to reach Choquequirao. The scenery is overwhelming: hikers descend into the seemingly interminable canyon of the Apurímac River, before climbing through dense forests as far as Choquequirao, surrounded throughout the route by the majestic peaks of the legendary Vilcabamba range. The only other destination that compares with Choquequirao is Machu Picchu. Terraces SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS Choquequirao is situated at an altitude of 3050 meters. It can be cold and the air is thin. This means you should not overexert yourself, and that you must pack warm clothing. Hikers should be in good physical condition. Structure
