(ORM) monthly meeting for Saturday, May 13 will be a "field trip." This will be a great event to bring spouses, friends and family. Caravan will leave ORM at Sam. First stop will be at the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma located at 702 North Washington in Enid. This is a major railroad museum whose director is "railroaders railroader" Frank "Watermelon" Campbell. Exhibits include beautifully restored Frisco 4-8-2 number 1419. She is the sister to number 1522 at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, which many of us seen in action through Oklahoma City a couple of years ago. Other equipment includes 10 cabooses from 10 different railroads, which are placed into service for excursions a couple of times each year. Other exhibits are numerous and include dining car china/silverware; operating HO, Nand Lionel layouts; maintenance of way equipment; rail cars and memorabilia. Along the drive from Enid to Waynoka, we will cross the abandoned "Orient" line at Orienta then through the Glass Mountains. Our second stop will be at Waynoka Station on the BNSF Transcon. The Santa Fe depot restoration is an Oklahoma Department of Transportation TEA-21 project, and is expected to get underway soon. The two-story Harvey House has been restored. On the first floor a restaurant is in operation in what was once the Harvey House restaurant. A highlight should be eating as a group in this restaurant with many trains going by the windows. The Gift Shop is also on the first floor. The second floor of the facility was the living quarters for Harvey Girls. It now houses the Waynoka HistorY Museum. One of the Harvey Girl rooms has been restored to its original look. There are many artifacts and displays relating to the Santa Fe Railroad, Harvey Houses, Transcontinental Air Transport (the Lindbergh line), and more. Telephone number Is 405/424-8222. The Waynoka Historical Museum is restoring a century-old three-room log cabin that was moved from near the Cimarron River to Waynoka Station. A section foreman's house, originally on the Buffalo & Northwestern RR at Edith, has been completely restored and furnished. Waynoka Historical Society Director Sandie Olson will be on hand to give us a special tour of the facilities. Museum Update... by Drake Rice, ORM secretary New steps have been placed on the northwest end of the loading dock on the north side of the Oakwood Depot. This will help with the Museum store operations and allow people to exit the loading dock without having to make a large step. The additional panels have been received from the University of Central Oklahoma to be placed on the fence, which helps makes the front entrance to the Museum very attractive. And mentioning the entrance, have you seen the newly paved street? After seven years, and many thanks to District One County Commissioner Jim Roth, NE 34th Street is a paved street, with curbs and gutters. County Commissioner Roth then had Grand Boulevard re-crowned and repaired the curbs and gutters for better drainage. The repaving has greatly improved the street and takes care of the run-off water. A big thanks to County Commissioner Jim Roth and his staff for their support and the work they provided. On the grounds, the shop car is now in service at long last. This allows the tools, nuts, bolts, etc, to be in one place. It also allows for inside workspace while working on small items, which has been much needed by the Museum. Work on the project started over a year ago with the efforts of Bob Linn. It was then picked up by other volunteers, and with some help from the General Motors folks, the shop is now functional. The car still has some work to be done, but now it can be used. Work continues on the installation of the air and heat unit under the diner. The generator has been installed under the car and work on the brackets for the air-handling units are being made to go inside in the ceiling. Then he units will need to be hung. Installation of the compressor under the car along with the fuel tank also will need to be done before the project is completed. Roof work on the old Union Pacific car is continuing and once that is complete, work will begin on the windows. Another big project will be work on the Rock Island Caboose, which now sits on the end of the rip track. It is also grass-growing time and volunteers will soon begin the six months of attention this work requires. There will also be the spraying of the track to keep the weeds under control. Speaking of track, Bob Hussey and Company have been tamping and leveling and lining the track from the Museum to the south. This work has greatly improved the track condition, which allows for smoother operations. In addition, track work continues on the tie replacement through the Lincoln Park Golf Course. The clearing work has been done on the north, but no track work north of the Rose Rock Addition Street crossing has been done. We are still waiting for the land donation for a parking area. At the present time, work is going south to NE 36th street. Crossing work for NE 36th Street is tentatively set for January '07. An underground phone line is in the process of being "Field Trip" continued installed over to the Depot to allow the Museum Store to handle phone calls on weekends. Member Bruce Sealy is helping with this project. It will also help with the credit card approval when they are used to purchase tickets and store items. Remember that every weekend is a work weekend at the Museum. All volunteer efforts are appreciated and provide improvements in making the Museum a better place. Then, we will go to Curtis Hill. We will visit Belva and Heman and watch a few trains. This is the BNSF Transcon with a train average of about 90 trains per day. REMEMBER: Stay off BNSF property. OHM adopts dress code by Larry Dodd ORM VIce President, Trainmaster For 2006, we are asking everyone, who volunteers as a Chair Car Host, to dress in a manner that easily identifies you as a host. The Board of Directors also has approved the use of Conductor and Brakeman uniforms from any railroad, if you have them and want to wear them during regular and special run days. If you choose not to wear a uniform, you are asked to wear an official ORM pullover shirt. The last model had a green stripe in the color and this year's shirts does not. Also this year the long sleeve model is available with khaki style pants. We may move to permit denim jeans so long as they are in good condition. Our purpose is to be sure we make a good "First Impression" to our guests. Working train crews are asked to dress appropriately for the period (overalls and bandana) and if you have them and choose to, you may wear official railroad uniforms as well. This adds to the overall 'experience' for our guests. When working as a volunteer during 2006, please keep these guidelines in mind. Thanks to you all who have participated during 2006 at the Museum. Workers in Tulsa make the signals, install them at crossing and test them to make sure they are accurate. "Increased technology is making the crossing arms more effective and high tech," Burns said. "The technology changes about every year," he said. New crossing signals have sensors and microprocessors that can compute how fast a train is going and lower the arms 30 seconds before the train reaches the intersection. @ The Oklahoman, March 30, 2006, page 28 Industry requirements are set by the federal government, which looks at each crossing and determines what sort of safety features need to be at an intersection depending on train and automobile traffic. New equipment at a train crossing can cost between $150,000 and $175,000. Background: Burns started his railroad signal company in his garage. After putting up signals for Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad for several years, Burns left the railroad and started his own business in 1991. "I was already doing this work for the railroad and I quit my job and started doing my own thing, " Burns said. "We had to expand a little bit." Railroad Signal does most of its business in Texas, California and Illinois. "These states have a lot of railroad miles and get more federal funding for railroad crossings than other states," Burns said. Railroad's foreman's house opens door to past, future byroshrabe The Oklahoman, Apr/113, 2006, page 12A WAYNOKA - A house thought to be one of the earliest built in the nowforgotten town of Edith will open its doors once again on April15. The house was built around 1918 and likely was owned by a section foreman for the Buffalo Northwestern Railroad, which ran through Edith, about 30 miles west of Alva, according to the Waynoka Historical Society. "After 2 1/ 2 years of restoration, the home will open as a historic exhibit next to Waynoka's Santa Fe Depot and Harvey House," said Sandie Olson, president of the historical society. Milt Lehr, a retired Northwestern Oklahoma State University professor, and his wife, Becky, discovered the home in a field and realized its value. After more than two years and about 150 trips from their Alva home 40 miles away, Lehr said he and his wife have restored the home to look like it may have between 1920 and 1940. The home will be a welcome addition to Waynoka's preserved railroad depot and Harvey House, one of three such depot restaurants that have been restored in the state, Olson said. Harvey Houses once dotted the western United States along the Santa Fe Railway. ORM members are planning a trip to Waynoka on Saturday, May 13. See page 1.

I The President's Column will return In next month's Issue. Union Pacific Railroad's Steam Locomotive No. 844 Wheel Base: Driving 22 ft. 0 ln. Engine: 50 ft. 11/n. Engine & Tender: 98 ft. 5 ln. Last of the steam locomotives to visit Oklahoma Union Pacific Railroad's historic steam locomotive No. 844 will be on a 35-day, 10-state tour to celebrate the railroad's history and heritage from April- June. The locomotive is scheduled to make two stops in Oklahoma on May 5 in Guymon and May 27 in Claremore as part of the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006. See attached schedule. Steam locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger trains. Many people know the engine as the No. 8444, since an extra '4' was added to its number in 1962 to distinguish it from a diesel numbered in the 800 series. The steam engine regained its rightful number in June 1989, after the diesel was retired. When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service. The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific's ambassador of good will. It has made appearances at Expo '7 4 in Spokane, the 1981 opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station in 1989. Hailed as Union Pacific's "Living Legend," the engine is widely known among railroad enthusiasts for its excursion runs, especially over Union Pacific's fabled crossing of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. A UP task force chose Vinita for the one-day operation because of the number of motorists who disobey warning devices at area crossings. In 2005, 64 crossing collisions occurred statewide, causing six fatalities and 31 injuries; a year earlier, Oklahoma recorded 58 crossing collisions causing nine deaths and 30 injuries. Part of Operation Lifesaver Inc.'s safety program, Officer on a Train enables police officers to ride on trains and observe motorists ' behavior at crossings. If a violation is observed, the officer radios another policeman positioned near the crossing who issues a citation. Railway stays on track by Julie Bisbee, Business Writer, "The Oklahoman," page 2B, March 30, 2006 Company celebrates 10th year WILBURTON - David Donoley's railroad is bringing industry to parts of Oklahoma that have seen their heyday and are looking to the next wave of prosperity. Donoley is president and chief executive of the Arkansas Oklahoma Railroad Co. The short-line railroad runs service between Howe and McAlester and Shawnee and Oklahoma City. Earlier this month, Donoley and his family celebrated the 10th anniversary of buying a parcel of the railroad from the state. Dono ley's yellow and red locomotives are more than a sound investment for his family. It's an investment in the future of the town where he grew up and all the towns along the track that cuts through southeastern Oklahoma. The company employs 25 people but adds more to the economy along its route. Each member of the Dono ley family plays a part in the operation. "I always say he married me because he smelled railroad on me," Dono ley's wife, Patricia joked. "But from the time we said go, I knew he was going to do this." OHM needs donation of tools Her father was the depot agent in Wilburton years ago. It was his job to look around for new business, keep customers happy and report back to headquarters in Chicago. Today, Patricia is executive vice president of marketing for the company. Donoley's daughter, Heather, is general manager. His older son, Chad, is the assistant vice president of marketing and researches emerging markets and companies that might be interested in the railroad's service. Youngest son Eric is superintendent of maintenance for all the engines and trucks used by the railroads. "How many kids get a railroad handed to them?" Donoley said. But there is still uncertainty in that inheritance. When General Motors announced it would shutter its factory in Oklahoma City, that also meant the end of a large operation for the Donoley's business. Arkansas-Oklahoma Railroad Co. had the contract to move cars from the factory to the Midwest City Automobile Logistics Facility. "It was a big blow to us," Donoley said. "But we're never sitting still." It's not the first time the company has felt the pinch of losing freight from GM. After a tornado hit the plant in 2003 and shut down operations for six months, the company lost more than 50 percent of its outbound business. "That's when we started looking around," Donoley said. "We don't ever want to put all our eggs in one basket." What the Donoleys found was that their future was in hauling crops and natural resources out of southeastern Oklahoma. The company has contracts to haul coal from mines to power plants, and it's making money from hauling pallets of sandstone from southeastern Oklahoma quarries to transfer stations that send it to Texas and California. The stone has become a new commodity for the company, offsetting the loss of the GM business. After years of working for the railroads in southeastern Oklahoma, it was a challenge for Dono ley to make a bid for a section of track owned by the state Transportation Department. The renovation of the workshop (refrigerator car) is almost complete, and so we finally have a place where tools can be stored and organized. The Museum needs to increase its tool inventory so members and the GM workers can complete tasks without bringing tools from home. If you are able to donate any of the following items, it would be much appreciated: The state purchased the tracks after the Rock Island Railroad went bankrupt and the tracks were on the auction block, said Joe R. Kyle, director of rail programs for the Transportation Department. Today, the state owns 850 miles of railroad and about 94 percent of that is leased to short-haul operators, such as the Arkansas Oklahoma Railroad Co. "Those lines are very important to rural Oklahoma," Kyle said. "It provides a good economic boost to the communities. It gives them a way to move heavy goods that they otherwise wouldn't have the ability to move."
