MAKING HISTORY OUR AMBITION FOR THE FUTURE

FOREWORD People are icreasigly lookig for experieces that brig history to life i a egagig way. The importace of Eglad s heritage i all its forms ca ever be over-estimated. Our historic buildigs, ladscapes ad collectios help defie us as a people, offerig a sese of place ad cotiuity i a rapidly evolvig world. But goe are the days whe people leared about history simply from readig books. People are icreasigly lookig for experieces that brig history to life i a egagig way. I believe that Eglish Heritage is particularly well placed to do just this through a combiatio of its scholarship, imagiatio ad uwaverig desire to ispire ad etertai, ad of course through its remarkable collectio of historic sites. This is a historic momet for us. With our ew freedom as a charity, idepedet of Govermet, our ability to egage with millios of people is ow greatly stregtheed. It is a extraordiary portfolio that tells the story of Eglad like o other from world-famous prehistoric sites like Stoehege to grad medieval castles such as Warkworth, ad from the bestpreserved Roma forts o Hadria s Wall to the Cold War buker i York. Keilworth Castle viewig platforms Our cofidece i the future is built o our track record over the past decade At Dover Castle i Ket, where we re-preseted the Great Tower, showcasig the castle s medieval history, ad opeed a major ew visitor experiece of the Secret Wartime Tuels, re-creatig the drama of Operatio Dyamo which saw the evacuatio of 338,000 Allied troops from the beaches at Dukirk durig the Secod World War. At Kewood House i Lodo, where we restored the iteratioally importat Robert Adam iteriors, icludig the library, widely cosidered to be Adam s masterpiece; restorig the origial pait scheme ad the dilapidated eighteeth cetury roof. At Stoehege i Wiltshire, where, after decades of public debate, we restored the prehistoric ladscape settig, successfully securig the closure of the A344 road which for geeratios had shamefully cut across the Neolithic processioal Aveue. We built a outstadig ew visitor cetre housig a major ew permaet exhibitio of artefacts ad re-created five Neolithic houses for visitors to explore. At Furess Abbey i Cumbria, where we rescued the fifteeth-cetury abbey church from collapse, uderpiig its medieval foudatios. At Keilworth Castle i Warwickshire, oe of the largest ad most impressive historic buildigs i Eglad, we re-created the pleasure garde desiged by Robert Dudley to woo Quee Elizabeth I. The garde is the first of its kid aywhere i the world ad is a triumph of British craftsmaship, ivolvig stoe masos, master sculptors ad specialist carpeters. These are just a few of the may projects udertake i the past decade durig which the commercial icome of Eglish Heritage more tha doubled, growig steadily by a average of 7% each year, ad 58m was raised i doated icome.
