All payments should be paid before arrival at camp in order to assure your reservation and participation. REFUNDS & TRANSFERS All refund requests must be made by email to Carrie Kurtz, Camping Secretary, at Carrie.Kurtz@scouting.org. Refunds will be given under these percentages and dates: 80% until November 24, 2017 50% from November 25, 2017 to December 8, 2017 No refunds after December 11, 2017 except for the death of an immediate family member or serious illness (doctor s not required). No refunds will be given over 80% in any case. Fees are transferable to another Scout in the same troop. ADULT LEADER COVERAGE & FEES 8 or more Scouts attending 1 FREE leader Adult leadership may swap out however there is an additional fee of $30 if the new adult wants a patch and shirt.

POLICIES & PROCEDURES MEDICAL INFORMATION Every Scout and Adult must submit a completed and current BSA Annual Health & Medical Record form in order to attend camp; no exceptions. Parts A, B & C must be complete. Wi-Fi Adult leaders will find Wi-Fi available at the Ames Administration Building, Meninak Lodge, Leaders Lounge, and Taylor Dining Hall. Campsites Campers and Adult Leaders need to bring tent and proper sleeping gear. In the campsite the common area to the pavilions will be open to provide shelter and power however, pavilion bedrooms will be used for staff housing. SHOWER HOUSES & BATHROOMS Please be good to our Shower Houses. Always remember to leave things better than you found it. In addition to each person doing their part, a duty roster will be posted which assigns troops the task of cleaning shower houses. A Scout is clean! Do your best! DIETARY RESTRICTIONS We try to accommodate to common dietary restrictions, but in some cases, the participant may need to bring their own food. Any special requests should be communicated via email to camp director, Carrie Kurtz at carrie.kurtz@scouting.org. SCOUTMASTER & ADULT LEADERS A Scout is HELPFUL All adults will be asked to mentor and support provisional Scouts. Any adult that has a special skill may apply for staff (and save the fee) by contacting Eli Rivera, staff spots are not guaranteed. TRADING POST Camp Shands has a BRAND NEW trading post supplied with all sorts of items such as merit badge books, literature, shirts, hats, patches, snacks, and soft drinks. Most Scouts will spend on average $40 to $50 during their stay. We accept all major credit cards. PARKING & VEHICLES IN CAMP Carpooling is highly encouraged! All vehicles must remain on the main roads and park in designated areas. You may drive to the campsite to unload / load however vehicle must be moved within 30 minutes. Troop trailers are welcome to stay in campsites. The speed limit is 14 mph and no persons are permitted to ride in the back of vehicles such as trucks or trailers. CAMPERS WITH DISABILITIES Any special accommodation request must be made by email to Carrie Kurtz, camping secretary, at Carrie.Kurtz@scouting.org. Camp Shands will do its best to assist with special needs. VISITORS & GUESTS All visitors must sign in at the Ames Administration Building upon arrival at camp. This is for the safety of our camp. Guests may eat with us ($4.00 breakfast, $5.00 lunch, and $6.00 dinner). Please notify us at the Ames Administration Building so we may be prepared. Upon departure all visitors are required to sign out, too. CHECK-IN The camp staff will be prepared to check-in at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday 12/27. Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. and merit badge classes will begin after lunch. CHECK-OUT Breakfast on Sunday morning is a continental breakfast for pick up at the Taylor dining hall at 7:00 a.m. Units should be packed and ready to depart by 8:45 a.m. at the latest. We urge parents to please be on time. We will do a final inspection of the campsite. Scoutmasters Paperwork Pickup (at Ames Admin Building): Pick up advancement packets, please review your paperwork carefully. Program Director will be available from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to answer any questions you may have. Pick up patches. Camp Shands 7 th Annual 6k & 1-mile Fun Run Join us on Saturday afternoon for the 7 th Annual Winter Blast 6k & 1-mile Fun Run. You can register using the special race registration form. Cost for Scouts, Scouters, and their families is only $20 if paid by 12/15/17 which includes a special air dry shirt. You may also show up and run the race for free (shirt not provided). Recognition at the New Year s Party with amazing awards to be provided.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS Red Cross CPR ~ get certified, save a life, you ll be glad that you did! Cost is only $20 and limited to the first 20 paid participants. Class is open to adults and Boy Scouts. Payments may be made in advance using the special program registration form. Scoutmaster Meeting ~ this is a required meeting for at least one adult to attend per unit. We will cover troop assignments, program information, and emergency procedures. SPL welcome to attend. Wilderness First Aid ~ current CPR certification is required and all participants must be at least 14 years of age. Cost is $95.00 if attending Winter Blast. Non Winter Blast participants may purchase meals separately as there is not time to run to town. NOTE: Boy Scouts do not have time to attend this session and take merit badge classes. Participation is limited to the first 10 paid participants. Camping is available. Payments may be made in advance using the special program registration form. Scoutmaster Specific ~ this course is intended to provide troop leadership with the information and tools needed to lead successful Boy Scout troops. This is a one day free course. Campmaster Training ~ ever wanted to be a Campmaster? Do you have a love for Camp Shands? Campmaster s are the key to weekend camping and we ll explain why, what the role of a Campmaster is, and how to volunteer within Camp Shands. Free class! IOLS (Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills) ~ working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. This course if free and is a 2-day course. The Trainer s Edge ~ In this adult training leaders will have the opportunity to hone their skills as a trainer and instructor to their youth and participants. This is a one day course for a fee of $20. Life to Eagle Presentation ~ this seminar is designed to give a Scout the information and procedures he needs to have the opportunity to successfully advance to the rank of Eagle Scout. This is a must for Life Scouts that desire and plan to earn the Eagle Scout rank. This seminar is open to all Boy Scouts, leaders and parents (even if not attending Winter Blast) Bling out Hiking Stick ~ come bling out your very own hiking stick. Our knowledgeable staff will be available to customize and decorate your own hiking stick. We will also have staff available to brand (or mark) your hiking stick, belt, or hat. Swimming Water Rescue ~ want to be able to take your unit on swimming outings? Take this class to learn about safe swim defense, safety rescues and have fun while doing it. Participants must be at least 16 years of age and must assist with one pool dinner party. Cost is $7.00 which includes a patch. Chess Tournament ~ do you have the skills to be the chess master? Join us in the Meninak and play against our chess masters! Awards will be presented at New Year Party. Night Hike ~ check your batteries and get your flashlight ready for an evening hike on a brand new trail at camp. Bring your water bottle and be prepared to walk! Star Gazing Party ~ do you love the stars? Always wanted to know where the Big Dipper is? Our trained staff will show off the sky. New Years Celebration ~ Starting after lunch on Saturday Meninak Field will be hosting a plethora of sports competitions and games to celebrate the coming of the new year. Listed below are some of the events going on during the celebration. 6 th Annual Winter Blast 6K Run & 1-mile FUN RUN ~ join us for an amazing 6K & 1-mile fun run. Cost for Scouts, Scouters, and their families is $20 if paid by 12/16/16. Each participant gets a special air dry shirt. Polar Bear Plunge ~ in the spirit of winter, Camp Shands will present the annual dip of the Polar Bear Plunge for Scouts and adults that are willing to brave the cold for a brief dip in the lake. Be sure to bring towels and warm clothing to change into. Many Polar Bear swimmers dress in costumes! Remember a permission slip must be on file in order to take advantage of this great activity. Nap on Safely ~ learn how to take a proper nap led by trained professionals. This is an adult training only and will receive certification upon completion. Archery Competition ~ are you good with a bow? Award for top archer (presented at New Year Party). Movie Night ~ join us in the Meninak Lodge to relax and enjoy a great movie. Anyone taking Citizenship in the Community this will meet one of the requirements.

Metalwork Merit Badge Blacksmith Workshop Release of Liability SUPPLEMENTAL CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN METALWORK MERIT BADGE BLACKSMITHING OPTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RISKS: I/we hereby acknowledge that participating in Metalwork merit badge with the option of Blacksmithing involves a risk of injury including but not limited to the following: heat or fire injuries, accidents involving hot or molten metal, fire and hammer blows.
