GENERAL 21 August 2001 ENGLISH ONLY OPEN-ENDED MEETING OF EXPERTS ON A COMPLIANCE REGIME UNDER THE CARTAGENA PROTOCOL ON BIOSAFETY Nairobi, Kenya, 26-28 September 2001 INTERGOVERNMENTAL COMMITTEE FOR THE CARTAGENA PROTOCOL ON BIOSAFETY Nairobi, Kenya, 1-5 October 2001 Information for Participants The Open-Ended meeting of Experts on a Compliance Regime under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the second meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety will be held respectively from Wednesday, 26 September to Friday, 28 September 2001, and from Monday, 1 October to Friday, 5 October 2001. The meetings will be held at the United Nations Environment Programme Conference Centre, Gigiri Compound, Nairobi, Kenya. Registration for the Open-Ended Meeting of Experts on Compliance under the Biosafety Protocol will be open on Tuesday, 25 September 2001 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will continue on Wednesday, 26 September 2001 from 8 a.m. until Friday, 28 September 2001 during meeting hours. Registration for the second Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety will start on Sunday, 30 September 2001 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will continue from Monday, 1 October 2001 from 8 a.m. to Friday, 5 October 2001 during meeting hours. Delegates are kindly requested to pre-register in order to facilitate the registration process. Please see pre-registration forms that are attached as Annex I and Annex II. Badges will be issued to participants at the registration desks. For security reasons, all delegates are requested to wear the badges at all times.

Documents 2 The main pre-session documents for the meetings have already been dispatched to the National Focal Points. The documents are also available at the Secretariat s web page at www.biodiv.org. Delegates are kindly reminded to bring their documents, as they will only be available in Nairobi in limited quantities for reasons of economy. Services to Delegates Gigiri Compound offers a variety of services to delegates: such as a post office (with telegram, telex, fax and international telephone facilities), business centre, banking services, travel agencies, telephones and cyber café for delegates, catering services, medical unit and a UN Gift Centre. The Business Centre will provide services to delegates on a commercial basis. Services available include: photocopying, word-processing, telephone and fax, mobile phones, rental of office and meeting room equipment (projectors, PCs, copiers, fax machines, etc.). Access to Kenya The international airport in Nairobi is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. A departure tax of US$ 40.00 is applicable. Transfers from the Airport to the hotels are available at cost (US $18) through both UN travel agents (Acharya and Bunson). Both agencies have an office at the arrival hall at the Airport. Transport to Gigiri Delegates can book, at cost, transport from their hotels to the UN conference centre in Gigiri from a special transport desk located in the lobby of the conference centre. Please note that some hotels provide transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the UN conference centre free of charge to their guests. General Information Kenya is located on the eastern coast of Africa, right on the equator. It is a land of striking landscapes, ranging from snow-capped Mount Kenya to rich farmlands, barren deserts and tropical beaches. It borders Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan in the north, Uganda in the west, Tanzania in the south, and the Indian Ocean in the east. Kenya's capital city is Nairobi. Other major towns are Mombasa, the main port on the Indian Ocean and Kisumu on Lake Victoria. The eight provinces of Kenya range in geographical size from the small Nairobi Province to the much larger Eastern and Rift Valley provinces. Kenya's national parks are wildlife and botanical sanctuaries set aside to conserve their unique species and for educational and recreational enjoyment by Kenyans and tourists. Hotel Information Delegates are responsible for making their own hotel accommodation arrangements. Please see Annex III for a list of hotels in Nairobi. The quoted rates are subject to change and do not include the applicable taxes (15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) and 10 percent service charge). Time Zone

Kenya is GMT + 3 hours. 3 Weather The temperature in Nairobi, late September and early October ranges between 14 C and 26 C during the day. Electricity 240 Volts. Visas Requirements Nationals of most countries require an entry visa for Kenya except those from the East African region (Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia). Delegates are kindly advised to seek a Visa prior to their departure, where possible. However, for delegates coming from countries without a Kenyan diplomatic or consular representation, a Visa can be granted at the airport and a letter will be issued to facilitate boarding and travel. Health A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for travellers over one year of age coming from countries where yellow fever may occur. Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have been indicated as countries where yellow fever may occur, but no guarantees can be given that no certificates are required from other countries. Malaria risk exists throughout the year in Kenya, though there is little risk in Nairobi and highlands. Delegates are responsible for obtaining the required inoculation and health certificates. Official Language Currency The official languages of the Republic of Kenya are English and Kiswahili. The official currency of the Republic of Kenya is the Kenyan Shillings (Ksh). The current exchange rate vis-à-vis the US dollar stands at approximately Kshs. 78 for one US dollar. Credit Cards Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants in the city.
