IMEX/MPI/MCI FUTURE LEADER FORUM INTERNSHIP INTERNSHIP REPORT ASIAN OVERLAND SERVICES CONVENTIONS AND EVENTS SARAH SKAVRON INTERNSHIP PERIOD: 4 February 2013 29 April 2013 LOCATION: KUALA LUMPUR My three months internship with AOS Conventions and Events was a very interesting and insightful experience for me, both on a professional and personal level. I was involved in several projects and could also experience the onsite procedures and problem solving during one symposium. Thanks to the support of Ms Angeline Lue from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, I could also get to know the daily work of a venue. My colleagues at AOS Conventions and Events were very helpful and supportive and in my free-time I could visit KL s famous sights and places as well as travel to other towns in the region. It was very exciting to work in such a dynamic environment and I learnt to switch between different projects easily. As the projects were very different in terms of delegate target groups, duration and main focus, it was interesting to do research and be in contact with partners and delegates from different backgrounds. As I was involved in the registration team for two conferences, it was essential to learn how to use the registration programme Certain V12 Eventspro. Moreover, I learnt a lot about the bidding procedure for new conferences because I could was involved in doing research and preparing material for one bid document. Also I learnt a lot about entrepreneurship through my research for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Personal Perception I arrived in Malaysia at a very interesting time, just a few days before the Chinese New Year celebrations started. My colleagues explained all the customs and traditions of the Chinese community in Malaysia to me and I enjoyed the beautiful decorations all over town during the two-days break which I used for Sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur. I also enjoyed the Chinese New Year themed Luncheon with colleagues from all departments of Asian Overland Services. Once a month all departments come together to listen to updates by the management, celebrate the birthdays of employees and have lunch together.
After work, I sometimes had dinner with colleagues, visited the company-owned Anti-Oxidant Spa, went to one of the many malls in KL or went swimming in the pool at our apartment. My flatmates Andy and Wasim were very welcoming and helpful and we also had dinner or watched movies together. During the last month, we had another flatmate, Bormey from Cambodia who came to Malaysia for training. It was very exciting for me to live in a multicultural and multilingual environment and work closely with my colleagues who were all from Malaysia. I learnt a lot about the Malay culture, the different groups, celebrations and lifestyle. Especially interesting was to follow my colleagues discussion about the General Election which was held on 5 May 2013. I am very thankful for this experience because I could get to know a different work culture and leadership style as well as get a deeper understanding of the Tourism and MICE Industry in Asia. Memories Our department celebrates Chinese New Year Trip to Batu Caves Last preparations for ISAAR Symposium Onsite at ISAAR Symposium at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre
