The Year of the Rooster 2017 The Rooster is the tenth in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac sign. The Rooster is almost the epitome of fidelity and punctuality. For ancestors who had no alarm clocks, the crowing was significant, as it could awaken people to get up and start to work. In Chinese culture, another symbolic meaning of the chicken carries is exorcising evil spirits. People born in the Year of the Rooster according to Chinese zodiac have many excellent characteristics, such as being honest, bright, communicative and ambitious. Most of them are born pretty or handsome, and prefer to dress up. In daily life, they seldom rely on others. However, they might be enthusiastic about something quickly, but soon be impassive. Thus, they need to have enough faith and patience to focus on one thing. Vietnamese New Year Tết Tết itself means festival and is the shortened version of Nguyên Đán, which falls on the first night of the new moon in the first month of the Lunar Calendar. The Tết festival lasts for seven public holidays which is considered the longest holiday. In Vietnamese culture, is the most observed holiday, the beginning of the spring and a fresh start. Tết is celebrate on the same day as Chinese New Year. What is Tết Tết is the occasion for locals to convey their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as the New Year with their beloved family members. During this time, every family will get together to have Tết food, decorate traditional Tết trees and follow their religious beliefs. How Tết is Celebrated Vietnamese will begin their preparation in advance, starting with cleaning their house, polishing utensils, buying new clothes and shoes to wear first day of New Year. They also decorate their house with colorful flowers, also people will try to pay all their pending debts as well. Family Gatherings The family decisions were made by the parents, elders, and grandparents. As a tradition, Vietnamese people honor their roots by worshiping their ancestors and treasuring family traditions, by doing this they believe this is a source of their lives, fortune and civilization. During Tết, they all return to their home village to celebrate the New Year.
Beliefs Colors Colors of red & yellow will bring good fortune, which is Vietnamese belief. Raising the Tết Pole Tết poles are raised in front of the house to bring good luck and to protect the family against evil spirits. Visiting the Pagoda According to belief, people often visit their neighborhood pagoda or temple once they complete Tết celebrations at home. It is believed that such a visit will bring blessings from Buddha and the spirits. Releasing Fishes and Birds Releasing captured birds and fishes is a Buddhist custom that is carried out during Tết because people consider it as a good deed which helps to start the New Year with luck. First Visitors According to Vietnamese tradition, the first person visiting a home in the New Year must be someone bringing good luck and prosperity to the family. Lion Dance It is said that the dance stands for good luck, prosperity and health.
