22 WILDLAND HOSELAYS KINKING HOSE 1. GENERAL: Each crew will practice the procedure of kinking hose. It is intended to be used only in an emergency. Hose clamps will always be used if available. 2. DESCRIPTION: A. To demonstrate the proper way to kink a hose line, be certain that the kinker closest to the pumper kinks first and that the nozzle is open when doing so. B. It takes two crew members to kink a hose (the nozzleman should be excluded and not recommended). 1. The first kinker takes his place approximately midsection of hose. 2. The second kinker is approximately one arm length distance behind the first kinker. 3. When the command is given to kink the hose, the nozzleman should allow adequate slack toward the first kinker. 4. The first kinker starts kink by forming a 3-foot loop (approx.) in front of himself and passing part of that loop to the second kinker. This is accomplished without stepping over the hose. 5. When the first kinker is ready to kink the hose, he tells the nozzleman to open the nozzle. 6. When the nozzle is open, the first kinker then puts all of his weight on the kink, with one (1) knee. 7. As soon as the first kinker is down on the hose, to second kinker does the same with his king. The kink is now complete. 8. If water is still coming out of the nozzle, let off the kink and repeat the steps again.
23 A. 1 1/2" SINGLE JACKET HOSE THE PURPOSE FOR USING 1 1/2" HOSE IS ITS ABILITY TO DELIVER AN ADEQUATE VOLUME OF WATER TO CONTROL THE FIRE AND TO DO SO OVER A LONG DISTANCE. THE OTHER MAJOR REASON FOR USING 1 1/2" HOSE IS THAT THE LARGER DIAMETER HOSE REDUCES FRICTION LOSS THEREBY ALLOWING FOR THE SIMULTANEOUS USE OF LATERIALS OFF THE 1 1/2" TRUNK LINE. unlined brush hose double jacket hose single jacket hose cotton jacket hose booster hose B. 1" SINGLE JACKET HOSE THE 1" SINGLE JACKET HOSE IS SUPPLIED WITH AN IRON PIPE THREAD ON THE COUPLINGS. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF 1" HOSE IS FOR USE AS A LATERIAL HOSE LINE. ONE-INCH HOSE IS ALSO USEFUL FOR SIMPLE HOSE LAYS IN LIGHT FUELS WHERE A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF MOPUP IS ANTICIPATED.
24 C. IDENTIFICATION OF HOSE ALL SINGLE JACKET HOSE SHALL BE IDENTIFIED USING A 1" STENCIL AND BLACK PAINT. THE ENGINE COMPANY NUMBER AND FIRE DISTRICT INITIALS SHALL IDENTIFY THE HOSE SECTION. D. MAINTENANCE OF HOSE SINGLE JACKET HOSE SHALL BE TESTED ANNUALLY TO 250# PSI FOR A PERIOD OF 5 MINUTES. SINGLE JACKET HOSE SHALL BE CLEANED AND THOROUGHLY DRIED AFTER USE. E. SINGLE JACKET HOSE ROLL ALL SINGLE JACKET HOSE THAT IS PLACED INTO HOSE PACKS SHALL BE ROLLED IN DONUT ROLLS. AFTER COMPLETING THE ROLL, TUCK THE SLIGHTLY LONGER FEMALE END UNDER THE MALE FITTING. THE ROLL IS HELD TOGETHER BY USING A SINGLE "RUBBERBAND" OR A SINGLE STRING TIE. THE RUBBERBAND CAN BE MADE USING STRIPS FRCM OLD TIRE INNERTUBE.
25 F. 1 BARREL NOZZLE (10/40 GPM) THE NOZZLE DEPLOYED SHOULD BE CAPABLE OF DELIVERING AT LEAST 30 GPM. THIS WILL PROVIDE FOR FIREFIGHTER SAFETY AND CREATE GREATER KNOCKDOWN ABILITY ON THE FIRE LINE. THE 1" BARREL NOZZLE HAS IRON PIPE (IP) THREADS AND MAY BE USED ON EITHER INITIAL ATTACK OR LATERAL HOSE LINES. G. 1 NOZZLE WITH "D" HANDLE SHUT OFF (10/40 GPM) THE 1" NOZZLE WITH "D" HANDLE SHUT OFF IS WELL SUITED AS AN ATTACK NOZZLE. THE NOZZLE HAS NATIONAL STANDARD (NH) HOSE THREADS. SO A 1 ½ REDUCER MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE NOZZLE WHEN IT IS BEING USED WITH 1 ½ " HOSE. THIS NOZZLE IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR USE ON LATERAL HOSE LINES, BUT WILL REQUIRE THE USE OF A 1 (IP) X 1 (NH) THREAD ADAPTOR.
26. H. 1 ½ TEE THE VALVED HOSELINE TEE OR "T" IS A SIMPLE FITTING DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A TAP-IN SITE IN THE MAIN TRUNK LINE. THE "T" IS 1 ½ " X 1 ½ " X 1" (IP) WITH A VALVE. A GOOD RULE OF THUMB WOULD BE TO PLACE A "T" IN THE 1 ½ " TRUNK LINE AT LEAST EVERY 200'. IN STEEP TERRAIN, PLACE A "T" EVERY 100' OR WHERE THE NEED FOR MOP-UP IS EXPECTED. THE ROUTINE USE OF "T"S (TAP-IN SITES) WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE LEAD NOZZLE TO CONTINUE ATTACKING THE HEAD OF THE FIRE WHILE THE LATERALS ARE USED TO CONTROL SPOT FIRES, FLARE UPS AND HOT SPOTS. I. 1 ½ " GATED WYE THE 1 ½ " X (2) 1 ½ " GATED WYE IS A TWO-WAY HIGH PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE. THE WYE CAN BE USED TO ADD ANOTHER TRUNK LINE OR PROVIDE A TAP-IN SITE FOR LATERAL HOSE LINES. THE WYE'S HOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO BRANCH OFF AND PROVIDE FOR TWO TRUNK LINES.
27 J. 1 (TP) TO 1 ½ " (NF) INCREASER THE INCREASER IS USED TO CHANGE FROM A SMALLER SIZE HOSE TO A LARGER SIZE. K. 1 ½ TO 1" REDUCER THE REDUCER IS USED TO CHANGE FROM A LARGER SIZE HOSE TO A SMALLER SIZE BECAUSE THE 1 ½ " (NH) X 1 " (NH) REDUCER WILL CONTINUE TO BE USED ALONG WITH THE 1 ½ " (NH) X 1" (IP) REDUCER. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL ASSOCIATED HOSE FITTINGS ARE PROPERLY COLOR CODED. L. 1" THREAD ADAPTOR THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF 1" THREAD ADAPTORS. NATIONAL STANDARD (NH) FEMALE TO IRON PIPE (IP) MALE AND (I P) FEMALE TO (NH) MALE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT EACH ENGINE CARRY AN ASSORTMENT OF THREAD ADAPTORS.

FIELD HOSE CLAMP WILDLAND HOSELAY COMPONENT DEFINITIONS THE LIGHTWEIGHT HOSECLAMP IS MADE OF CORROSION RESISTANT ALLOY AND IS DESIGNED TO BE USED ON 1" AND 1 ½" SINGLE JACKET RUBBER LINED COTTON HOSE ONLY. THE CLAMP IS USED TO TEMPORARILY STOP THE FLOW OF WATER. THIS ALLOWS FOR THE REPLACEMENT OR REMOVAL OF HOSE AND/OR FITTINGS WITHOUT SHUTTING DOWN THE PUMP. TO KEEP FROM CUTTING THE HOSE WITH THE BRASSCLASP DURING THE CLAMPING PROCESS, THE HOSE MUST BE CENTERED IN THE JAW TO THE REAR OF THE CLAMP. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ROLLING THE HOSE TO THE REAR OF THE CLAMP JUST PRIOR TO CLOSING THE JAW. N. MARKING OF FITTINGS ALL FITTINGS SHALL BE IDENTIFIED BY MARKTNG WITH THE ENGINE CO. NUMBER AND THREAD TYPE. THE METHOD OF QUICK THREAD IDENTIFICATION IS TO PAINT THE FITTING WITH A COLOR CODE TO DESIGNATE THE THREAD TYPE. IRON PIPE THREAD SHALL BE DESIGNATED WITH BLACK PAINT AND THE NATIONAL STANDARD THREAD SHALL BE DESIGNATED WITH YELLOW PAINT.
29 0. HOSE PAC THERE ARE SEVERAL METHODS OF COILING OR PACKING HOSE FOR USE AS HOSE PACKS. THE MOST COMMON AND SIMPLEST METHOD IS ROLLED HOSE IN PACKSACKS. THE HOSE PACK IS MADE OF COTTON DUCK OR SYNTHETIC MATERIAL AND COMES WITH 2" SHOULDER STRAPS. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF HOSE PACKS THAT MAY BE CARRIED ON ENGINE COMPANIES *ENGINE COMPANY PREFERENCE. 1. COMBINATION PACK A MINIMUM OF 100 OF 1 ½ " AND 50' OF 1" HOSE IN DONUT ROLLS. 2. SIMPLE PACK 100' TO 150' OF 1 ½ " HOSE IN DONUT ROLLS OR COILS. 3. ONE INCH PACK 200' OF 1" HOSE IN DONUT ROLLS. P. IDENTIFICATION OF HOSE PACKS HOSE PACKS SHALL BE IDENTIFIED BY ENGINE COMPANY NUMBER USING A 2" STENCIL AND BLACK OR WHITE PAINT. HOSE PACKS THAT CARRY ONLY 1 " HOSE (ONE INCH PACKS) SHALL BE IDENTIFIED USING A 2" STENCIL AND YELLOW PAINT ON THE FLAP AND BOTH SIDES OF THE HOSE PACK.
30 Q. WEB BELT WITH BELT PACK, FIRE SHELTER AND CANTEEN. THE WEB BELT FACILITATES THE CARRYING OF THE FITTINGS NEEDED TO ASSIST IN THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE WILDLAND HOSE LAY. THE WEB BELT ALSO CARRIES REPLACEMENT FLUIDS AND THE FIRE SHELTER THAT IS VITAL TO MAINTAIN THE SAFETY OF THE INDIVIDUAL INVOLVED IN THE HOSE LAY.
