Fall 2017 Cub Scout Badge s, Knoch Knolls Nature Center, 320 Knoch Knolls Rd., Naperville, IL 60565 To book a program: Contact Nature Center Staff, 630-864-3965 or info@napervilleparks.org Tiger Cub s Tigers in the Wild description Go for a hike through the woods at Knoch Knolls Park. Before the hike the group will review The Outdoor Code and the Leave No Trace Principles. Along the trail find three different animals or signs of animals, two different trees and two different plants. Badges are not included but program meets 6/7 requirements for the Tigers in the Wild Required Adventure badge. Bring along a backpack and your Tiger Handbook and be prepared to carry your own gear. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and a water bottle. Sky is the Limit Investigate the night sky and discuss the different astronomy jobs. Discover the names of two former scouts that become astronauts. Learn how to use a telescope to view the moon or planets. Find two constellations that you can see using only your eyes and find out which stars make up one of these constellations. Design and name your own constellation. Make a Big Dipper constellation. Wolf Cub s Paws on the Path Digging in the Past description Explore the trails as you take a 1-mile hike at Knoch Knolls Park. Choose the right gear according to the weather, establish a buddy system and go over what to do if you get separated from the group. Before the hike review The Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles. During the hike, find and name two birds, two insects and two other animals that live in the area. Also keep your eye out for two interesting things you ve never seen before. Afterwards, as a group, draw a map of the route you took and add common map symbols including a compass rose. Badges not included but meets 8/8 requirements for the Paws on the Path Required Adventure badge. Be a paleontologist for the day by making a fossil cast, going on a dinosaur dig, and creating edible fossil layers. Create your own dinosaur species to share with the group and play a dinosaur matching game to test your knowledge of dinosaurs. View an ancient species of fish swimming in the nature center aquarium and learn about the Illinois state fossil. Badges not included but meets 6/6 requirements for the Digging in the Past 1.5 hrs $100(R)/$130(N) Spring,, & Winter can be conducted completely indoors. Portions of the program may be held outside if the weather is nice. Bring enough animal crackers, pudding and graham cracker crumbles for each scout to make an edible fossil layer snack (cups and spoons provided).

Bear Cub s Fur, Feathers, and Ferns A Bear Goes Fishing description Take a 2-mile hike to the Confluence and back. Identify six signs of wildlife along the way and observe from a distance. View plants up close with magnifying glasses. Find out what animals are endangered in our area and an animal that became extinct. Discuss the causes of animal population declines with the group. Learn about composting during a visit to Knoch Knolls Nature Center. Badges not included but meets 6/7 requirements for the Fur, Feathers and Ferns Required Adventure badge. Visit the Knoch Knolls Nature Center to learn about local fish. Identify and draw three types of native fish and discover where they live and what they eat. Watch the fish in the aquarium being fed. Learn three fishing regulations for our area and the reason for these rules. Use a rod and reel to try and catch a fish. All fishing equipment is supplied. Badges not included but meets most requirements for the A Bear Goes Fishing 1.5 hrs $100(R)/$130(N) Spring & free. This program requires 1 scout leader for every 2-3 All fishing equipment is supplied. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and water bottle.

Webelos s Webelos Walkabout description Plan and go on a 3-mile hike at Knoch Knolls Park. Recite The Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles and how you can apply them on your hike. Assemble a first aid kit and a snack as a group. Pick up litter along a section of the trail. Learn about poisonous plants and animals in our area. Take on a hip role during the hike: trail leader, first-aid leader, snack leader, or service project leader. Badges not included but meets 8/8 requirements for the Webelos Walkabout Required Adventure badge. 2 hrs $100(R)/$130(N) Spring & Each scout should bring one ingredient to make trail mix. (Please check with the scouts beforehand about allergies). We will supply the mixing bowl and large spoon for mixing and scouts can reuse their bags or containers to hold their trail mix on the hike.

Webelos s description Into the Wild Visit the nature center and share your experience with your family or den afterwards. Discover the importance of aquatic ecosystems and wetlands for wildlife and people and three ways you can help conserve water. Observe the native fish in the aquarium and share what they are doing. Go on a hike to observe three additional animals in their natural habitats. Find out about bird flyways and why places like Knoch Knolls Park are great spots to view birds during the spring and fall. Identify an animal that only lives in Northeastern Illinois and why it s only found here. Figure out other types of impacts humans have on nature and what you can do to help. Badges not included but meets 6/6 Requirements Into the Wild Elective Adventure badge. 2 hrs $100(R)/$130(N) Spring &

Webelos s description Into the Woods Visit the Knoch Knolls Nature Center to learn more about native plants, trees and ecosystems. Go on a hike to view both deciduous and coniferous trees. Role play the parts of a tree and learn about their functions. Identify six common trees and six common plants in our area and figure out how wildlife and humans use them. Make a bark rubbing of the oldest tree in the park and estimate its age. Examine a tree cookie to discover its life story.
