Travel Information Zambia This travel information is provided to allow our guests a comfortable stay in this beautiful country. Please find more information on the official Zambian Tourism Authority website www.zambiatourism.com. Travel Documents All visitors to Zambia must have a passport which is valid for at least 6 months beyond their intended departure date from Zambia. Visitors to southern Africa must ensure they have sufficient blank VISA pages (not endorsement pages) in their passports, with at least two consecutive/side by side blank pages. Our recommendation is 3 pages (or even 4 if you are travelling through more than one country on your journey). If there is insufficient space in the passport then entry into a country could be denied. Any applicable visas and/or relevant documentation are the responsibility of the traveller. Visitors must also be in possession of outward travel documents and have sufficient funds for the duration of their stay.

Visas Visas are the responsibility of the traveller. Those nationalities that are required to have visas to enter Zambia, may have to apply for these in advance while others can obtain these on arrival at the port of entry. Costs also vary depending on the nationality of your passport so please contact us for exact details relevant to you. Visit the following website for additional information Roho Ya Chui is not responsible for the content thereof www.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm. Please note: If visas are required, please ensure you have the correct cash amounts available as credit cards and Travellers Cheques are not accepted. You must advise the relevant official of the total number of days that you are spending in Zambia otherwise you may be charged to obtain an extension/additional visa later on. If you arrive in Zambia but continue your safari in another country (such as Botswana, Namibia or Zimbabwe) and then return to Zambia; OR are staying in Livingstone, Zambia but doing some touring in Botswana or Zimbabwe, then a double-entry visa must be obtained on arrival from the immigration official. Multiple entry visas have to be obtained in advance and these are only issued at the Immigration Department s headquarters in Lusaka and the following consulates abroad: London, Pretoria, Lubumbashi, New Delhi, Beijing and Lilongwe. Medication Certain over-the-counter medications contain ingredients that are on Zambia s list of controlled substances. As a precaution we recommend that you do not take unnecessary non-prescription medication with you when travelling to Zambia. For prescription medication, please carry a doctor s prescription with you and ensure that the medication is in its original bottle. A list of these controlled substances is available from your consultant on request. Currency The currency in Zambia is the Kwacha, which is not available for purchase outside the country. US Dollars and Pound Sterling are easily changed into Kwacha locally at any of the Bureaux de Change offices in the main towns. If you are offered an exchange on the black market at the borders, please exercise extreme caution as they are notorious for fraudulent behaviour. Please ensure that all US Dollar notes are the 1996 series or after with large heads, as no one accepts notes issued before 1996 with small heads. Travellers Cheques are not at most lodges, camps and hotels.

Credit Cards International Visa and MasterCard are generally accepted but American Express and Diners Club are often not. Some camps in very remote parts of Zambia do not accept credit cards at all so it is advisable to travel with small denominations of cash. Banks There is an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) outside Barclays Bank in Livingstone town which accepts Visa cards only. You cannot change your US Dollars in a bank in Zambia, unless you are an account holder so foreign exchange needs to be obtained from Bureaux de Change offices. Shopping Zambia sells a wide range of locally made wooden furniture, batiks, candle holders, lamps shades, hand dyed cloths and carvings. Please be advised that souvenirs may be exported without restriction but game trophies such as tooth, bone, horn, shell, claw, skin, hair, feather or other durable items are subject to export permits. Value Added Tax (VAT) All goods and services in Zambia are priced to include value added tax (VAT) of 16%. Duty Free: There is no duty free shopping available at O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) on flights to Zambia. Please make sure any duty free purchases of perfume, alcohol, etc. are made before arriving in southern Africa. Departure Taxes For passengers flying out of Zambia, there is a US$ 25.00 International Airport Departure Tax which is not included in the cost of the safari and must be paid directly on departure at the airport (South African Airways and British Airways include this departure tax in the cost of their ticket). There is also an US$ 8.00 per person Domestic Departure Tax payable direct when departing internally on a flight out of Lusaka, Livingstone and Mfuwe airports. The Zambian Department of Aviation has introduced a Security Tax, with effect from 1 January 2011. This additional tax of US$ 5.00 per person for international flights and US$ 3.00 per person for domestic flights must be paid on departure at the relevant Zambia airports, over and above the existing Departure Taxes. Please ensure that you have the exact amount of US Dollars in cash (change is usually not provided) before you leave your home country as you cannot get any US$ within Zambia. Please note that large denomination bills such as U$ 50.00 or US$ 100.00 bills are not accepted. Travellers Cheques and credit cards are also not accepted for this purpose.

Luggage on Air Transfers There are strict weight restrictions in place on any itinerary which includes light aircraft transfers for the following reasons: The aircraft are designed with a maximum bodyweight and luggage weight allowance. Most of our airfields are over 1000 metres above sea level and are located in the tropics, and therefore the permissible aircraft carrying capacity is reduced. The aircraft have physical space restrictions. Some important issues must please be noted for air transfers with Wilderness Air charters: - Luggage, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is restricted per person travelling on seat rates to 20kg (44lbs). - Only soft bags will be accepted - no wheels, frames or rigid structures can be transported as they physically cannot fit into the aircraft. - The maximum dimensions of the soft bags which can be accommodated are as follows: 25cm (10 inches) wide x 30cm (12 inches) high and 62cm (24 inches) long. Should your guest require a bag, we do have a supply of soft nylon carry-all bags at a reasonable cost. These bags are ideal for use on light aircraft and are the correct dimensions. Please keep in mind that the baggage compartments on the light aircraft are only 25cm high (10 inches), so the pilots must have the ability to manipulate the bag into the compartment. - A collapsible wheeled luggage frame/trolley (separate to the bag) is allowed, as long as basic dimensions are similar to that of the bag. - Please inform us in advance if guests weigh more than 100kg (220lbs) as additional weight allowance on the aircraft must be purchased for safety and comfort. The costs for this are calculated on request according to specific region and routing, and provides for a maximum of 70kg (154lbs) excess weight. - These limits are applicable to guests travelling on a seat rate basis so may differ if guests have booked on a sole use or private charter option in which case the maximum's depend on the type of aircraft and the number of passengers booked. These luggage restrictions appear minimal, however, please bear in mind the following: Most safari camps / lodges and hotels provide basic toilet amenities. Laundry can be done on a daily basis (many camps provide this service free of charge but some camps and hotels do charge a nominal fee). Mainly casual clothing is required. As no formal clothes are needed throughout most of southern Africa, we recommend that luggage is limited to the basics. More formal attire is usually required only when staying in the more prestigious city hotel establishments or on any of the luxury trains.

On a wildlife safari, casual clothing is the order of the day. Please refer to our suggested packing list as a guideline. Excess Luggage If you need to bring luggage in excess of your allowance, you may have the option of buying an extra seat. This "seat in plane" allows for a maximum of 70 kg (154 lbs) excess weight, on the proviso that the bag(s) conforms to the dimensions 40 x 40 x 80 cms (16 x 16 x 31 inches); soft bag i.e. no wheels/frame/rigid structures; able to physically fit onto a light aircraft seat; able to be physically secured with one seatbelt; will not impact on the comfort of other guests on the flight. The additional cost of this varies depending on your flight schedule so please contact your agent for further details. Laundry Laundry can be done at most camps on a complimentary basis; however the bush camps have limited facilities and at some camps, the camp staff will not wash underwear (in these cases washing powder is supplied for guests to rinse their own underwear). There may be a nominal charge at third party establishments. Power Supply Most of the bush camps and lodges in Zambia are all powered by a combination of diesel generators and large batteries with invertors and chargers. The camps and lodges can usually supply plug adapters that will accommodate most American and European plug types, however guests are advised to bring their own adaptor and spare batteries. Plug outlets are available in the guest rooms/tents at Shumba, Kapinga, Kalamu Lagoon, The River Club and Toka Leya and are connected to 220V/13 amp alternating current. Guests at Busanga Bush Camp, Lufupa Bush Camp, Lufupa Tented Camp, Lufupa River Camp or Musanza Discoverer Camp will need to hand their battery to the camp staff for charging in the main area of office whilst they are out on activities. Sleep apnoea machines can be used in the rooms at all camps except Busanga Bush Camp, Lufupa Bush Camp, Lufupa Tented Camp, Lufupa River Camp or Musanza Discoverer Camp. Language Over 73 African dialects are spoken in Zambia, however the official language I English. Time Zambia is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Climate The weather in southern Africa is generally pleasant throughout the year warm to hot days, and cool to warm nights. During our winter months however (May to September), it can get really cold at night and in the early morning, particularly when on safari, so we would like to suggest that you pack accordingly very warm clothing including an anorak/winter jacket, a beanie, scarf and gloves are recommended. Please also refer to our packing suggestions list. Summer October to April - days are hot and generally sunny in the morning with possible afternoon thunderstorms. Day temperatures average 25 C - 35 C and night temperatures drop to 14 C - 20 C. Low-lying areas such as Lake Kariba, Livingstone, Luangwa Valley, Lower Zambezi National Park, Lake Tanganyika, Kafue National Park and the Zambezi Valley can also be considerably warmer all year round with temperatures of 35 C - 50 C. The rainy season is generally from November to March. Winter May to September - days are dry, sunny and cool to warm 20 C - 25 C, while evening temperatures drop sharply to 5 C - 10 C. Exceptionally cold spells can occur 0 C 5 C.
